Wild Mountain Thyme, the musical paean to pastoral summer romance commonly misattributed to Robbie Burns, was actually written in the 1950s by Northern Ireland's Francis McPeake. Like so many folk songs, though, its true origin dates much farther back; the lyrics and the melody are clearly based on The Braes o' Balquidder, a song written by Scottish poet Robert Tannahill in the late 1700s that derived its own melody from an even earlier traditional air. Tonight, to mark the summer solstice, we listen to the great balladeer Liam Clancy singing Wild Mountain Thyme, under the title Will Ye Go Lassie, Go.

Of anonymous "sources" and the lying liars who "quote" them:

"Yet another mainstream media story about Senator Marco Rubio, citing the infamous 'unnamed sources,' makes a claim about him that is proven to be demonstrably false within twenty four hours.

"This time, it's Jonathan Karl blogging for ABC News who posted a breathless headline saying that 'Marco Rubio Not Being Vetted to Be Mitt Romney's Running Mate,' citing, of course, some vague 'knowledgeable Republican sources.' He didn't even bother to find an 'unnamed source advising the campaign' or 'unnamed source close to Romney.' Just some anonymous people, allegedly Republican."

"Well, Mitt Romney clarified on Sean Hannity's show….(that) only he and (his top adviser know who is being vetted for VP."

[…]

"Then, less than an hour ago, the Wall Street Journal posted that Romney had gone on the record with a group of reporters at a campaign stop in Michigan, and said that ABC's story was 'entirely false,' stating explicitly, 'Marco Rubio is being thoroughly vetted as part of our process.'"

Remember that little fluff that the left had about the f35s not being able to use our refueling tankers?

http://www.dodbuzz.com/2012/06/19/lockheeds-comprehensive-qa-on-the-f-35/

A: O’Bryan: “We anticipated a number of the operators would want probe-and-drogue refueling in the F-35A and we kept that space empty on the F-35A to accommodate probe and drogue refueling. We‘ve done a number of studies – funded studies, not projects – funded studies to evaluate that, paid for by the countries who want that to happen. It’s a relatively easy … doable change.”

Excerpt from Roger L. Simon's "Are Liberals the New Squares? at PJM:

"What makes modern liberalism the mess that it is today is that it is mainly composed of people who desperately wanted to be cool in high school – wanted to be Abbie Hoffman or Eldridge Cleaver – but never were. Their longing – this need to be Abbie – has clouded their thinking and their ability to perceive reality, placing us all in a mess along with them."

Excerpt from jwkozak91's 12:46 link about an internal Treasury Board report showing that federal civil servants take an average of 18 sick days a year - 2½ times as much as the private sector average - at a cost to Canadian taxpayers of more than $1 billion a year:

Linda Duxbury, a professor at Carleton University's Sprott School of Business and one of the country's leading specialists in workplace health and absenteeism, said the record levels of sick leave shouldn't come as a surprise.

"We know in fact downsizing, restructuring, re-engineering, losing jobs — it is incredibly hard on people; it is hard on their psyche, hard on their mental health."

Gary Corbett, head of the Professional Institute of the Public Service, the union representing government scientists, engineers and other professionals, blames the Harper government's approach to downsizing the public service…

Yeah, that neo-con fascist Harper is enough to make you sick, eh?

Canadian government employees earn more, work less: study

Here is an interesting little nugget:

"Among the least-informed respondents, Democrats and Republicans picked the wrong answer in roughly equal numbers. But among better-informed voters the story was different. Republicans who were in the fiftieth percentile gave the right answer more often than those in the ninety-fifth percentile.

In other words, Republicans are far better informed than Democrats, far far better informed.

That's why they think we are stupid.

"An Ottawa man whose obesity played a factor in whether he was fit enough to be a father has lost custody of his children after a judge ruled Wednesday that his two boys will be put up for adoption.
...
The father was described as a “loving” and “intelligent” father who held deep hatred for the Children’s Aid Society of Ottawa.
...
The ruling also noted that the 38-year-old father showed no signs of abuse toward the boysSuperior Court Justice M. James said in his ruling:
...
“(The father) also has achieved stability in his personal life. He has lost a substantial amount of weight through daily intensive exercise and dieting. (The father’s) weight loss regime is itself a full-time job. So is parenting two high-needs children. One will inevitably have to give ground to the other.
...
The judge has now ruled that the boys be put up for adoption.
Both boys are in foster care, one in a home run by a single mother with five other children.
...
The man acknowledges that he’s not perfect, but he says he’s a good father.
...
“The only thing they have against me is my weight. I’m not too fat to be a dad. I can be a good dad. I almost ate myself to death but these days I eat really healthy meals,” he told the Citizen."
...
and finally ... "The father’s health issues are magnified by his anti-authoritarian traits"

My questions are...

Are YOU too fat to have children?
Do you only feed your children canned vegetables?
Are your children exposed to non government approved thinking?

"'Rio+20 Has Become the Summit of Futility'"

"Twenty years ago, the United Nations summit held in Rio de Janeiro paved the way for landmark agreements on the climate and the environment. This year's meeting, on the other hand, has been widely criticized for its lack of vision in the face of accelerating degradation of the planet. German commentators are critical as well."

"Essentially, the Rio+20 summit was over before it was officially opened."

"NEW YORK — Factory activity in the U.S. mid-Atlantic region contracted for a second month in a row in June as new orders tumbled, a survey showed on Thursday.

The Philadelphia Federal Reserve Bank said its business activity index dropped to minus 16.6 from minus 5.8 in May, far below economists’ expectations for a reading of zero, according to a Reuters poll."

"The Fast and Furious scandal is turning into President Obama's Watergate"

"Obama is repeating many of the mistakes that led to Nixon's resignation in 1974"

"Fast and furious hasn’t been discussed a lot in the mainstream media, which is why the facts can seem so preposterous when you read them for the first time. But the story is slowly unraveling and the public is catching up with the madness. On Wednesday, the The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee voted to hold Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt over his decision to withhold documents related to the “gun walking” operation – documents that President Obama tried to keep secret by invoking executive privilege. The question of why the Prez intervened in this way will surely hang over the investigation and the White House for many months to come. Be patient, conservatives. It took nearly eight months for the Watergate break in to become a national news story. But when it finally did, it toppled a President."

"Genetically engineered pigs killed after funding ends"

"Bona Hunt said that the university received "many generous and well-intentioned offers," but there was "absolutely no opportunity for this to occur, as adoption, donation or transfer of the animals would represent a breach of protocols and Canadian policies."

Added Bona Hunt: "Releasing the Enviropigs would also have violated Canadian regulations for the containment and use of transgenic animals, and possibly compromised consumer safety and market protection."

The University of Guelph had previously filed an application with Environment Canada to permit the GE pig to be farmed commercially, and cleared an important hurdle in February 2010. At the time, the department determined the GE pig did not harm the environment under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act and accepted the University of Guelph's notice of significant new activity — meaning the GE pig could be farmed commercially."

Public servants: PAY.

I prepared a income tax return this year for a lady who I had thought had retired in mid-2011. BUT, her income was just as high as in 2010.

The mystery was solved when she explained that, yes she had stopped work in June 2011 but continued to be paid until June of this year.

... Oh, I replied.
