What is the Greek word for “candle,” anyway?

Love this part :
"Finally, Spanish borrowing costs were driven to new highs as Madrid announced it will formally seek a too little, too late bailout for its banks on Monday. Spanish interest rates are the market’s way of saying “game’s up, folks.”

Watch the DOW nosedive on Monday.

Leveraging against themselves with borrowed money. Who is learning from who: The EU from Oblameblame,or the other way around. I love it when a plan comes together.

The phrase "Insuffient Funds" is going to seen in many languages on many ATM screens all across Euroland in the very near future.

I am pretty sure Suzuki and Michael Moore are on their way there now to do a docu-fiction about how Greece's return to pre-industrial status is
A) an example of capitalism's failure (of course)
B) an example of a low carbon, natural state that all 1st world nations should aspire to become.

I believe the film's working title is - The Accidental Degeneration : A Green Love Story

The sinking of much of southern Europe into new third world status continues. Once fundamental infrastructure like grid electricity seizes up due to lack of payment then bottom will be hit and reality will bite.

"Candle" is luchnos (λυχνοσ). Matthew 5:15:

ουδε καιουσιν λυχνον και τιθεασιν αυτον υπο τον μοδιον αλλ επι την λυχνιαν και λαμπει πασιν τοις εν τη οικια

(Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.)

The arrogance, incompetence, and indifference to human suffering shown by the current EU elite are almost without precedent in Christian European history. The names which come to mind in hearing of their misdeeds are Nero and Elagabalus.

The first victim of the Eurocrats is Greece. The consequences of the complete absence of liquidity in that country, as Nigel Farage has said with brutal eloquence, is a humanitarian catastrophe. And yet one would think it is something that smart central bankers could ease - perhaps by issuing scrip with limited conversion to Euros. Perhaps measures taken during the military occupation of Belgium during WWI might be relevant.

At any rate, the Eurocrats are not war criminals, but criminals of some sort - perhaps we could devise a term economic criminals, or perhaps resuscitate the Soviet crime of wrecking and apply that to them.

It is funny and also painfully cruel to listen to these career civil servants prattling on about "growth". They know nothing about it.

Nigel Garage (UK Independence Party) has been preaching the folly of Europe's fiscal and monetary policies in the European parliament for 10 years. Too bad nobody was listening. Too late now for the 500 million who are unfortunate enough to be ruled by this most undemocratic club. A number of his speeches to the EU can be found on YouTube.

That should read Nigel FARAGE. Don't you just love autocorrect?

I'm still laughing from the first 2 posts 66, I think Nigel Garage is that Calgary Englishman clown from some ecotard wilderness dopey group here in Alberta who's always squealing about there being no more grizzly bears, meanwhile I have 2 pet bears (ursus horribilus), in my yard most every night, might just trap them and re-gift them to the dopey Nigel. Your right on the Nigel Farage and his speeches are just as good as Daniel Hannans and Vaclav's when it comes to trying to wake the European terminally stupid, well worth the time, thanks.

You know it's bad in Greece when even the 'Traveling Pants' refuse to show up unless someone sticks a few drachmas in their pocket.
