And the war for civilization and freedom has begun. May the grandchildren of that generation be up to the task.

WWII was the last war we will ever win so enjoy it. We never lost a war up to that point and haven't won one since. Afghanistan was a disaster and a waste of lives.

In WWII the SS didn't play by the rules so we shot them. In Afghanistan we were trying our own troops for shooting the enemy. A disgrace.

In Afghanistan we drove back and forth down roads waiting to get blown up. The solution was not to make the roads safe, it was to get helicopters. We had 3,000 troops doing a job 30,000 couldn't have done. Just a waste of time.

The we I use is the royal we. Our society is so sissified it has lost the ability to defend itself.

And Tsar Vlady, as his first act of his third term, reviews the troops, armour, guns and aircraft parading down Red Square on "Great Patriotic War Victory Day"

What Scar said.

@scar: note the correspondence of women's larger role in the US, Can and UK political process and your point about winning wars. The question is how do you "unring" that bell.

Putting May the 8th in perspective SDA is about the tenth place I've gone on the internet this AM and this is the first mention I've found of one of the two most historic days of the 20th Century. There are only 21 million people in the US born before WWII. Pretty soon we'll all be gone.

I'm not surprised the Russians celebrate and Canadians don't. The real winner of the war was Stalin, who helped himself to half of Europe (with an option on the rest).

Dishonourable mention goes to the race-baiting traitors who for two generations have been using horror stories of Nazi atrocities to shut down meaningful debate on how best to defend the Queen's dominions from conquest by savages from the four corners of the earth, and demand legal privileges for their cults, for any of a number of selfish reasons (the most important ones involving being too vain to cook their own food and clean their own toilets).

Of course, few of the people who blubber about Anne Frank now would have done so much during the actual war as spit on her if she were on fire. They're invariably the first to libel any Jew or Christian who takes the Jewish covenant with God seriously, and to condemn any Jewish attempts at self-defense in Israel or anywhere else.

Ah, the SF Examiner - a Hearst paper, now sadly mostly defunct.

Any day now, the pendulum will begin to swing in the other direction.

On a personal note, the Second World War cost my family so much in death and injury, just like it did so many other families in Canada. I will always love the Greatest Generation for what they sacrificed for us.

But I'm glad the "Old Man", as I always called my Dad, didn't live to see the debacle Europe has become.

I believe tomorrow is the anniversary of the death of my Uncle,Dad's youngest brother- 19, whose Staghound armoured car hit a V-2 warhead being used as a mine. They never found a trace of the crew, not even the dogtags.

You hit the bullseye

Yeah, yeah, yeah. I know the Yanks won WWII in Europe all by themselves, but can you at least find a photo of a Canadian paper that carried the headlines? ;)

"WWII was the last war we will ever win so enjoy it. We never lost a war up to that point and haven't won one since."

Generally I share your notions but I am compelled to disagree here. Militarilly the US involvement wound up in Viet Nam after TET....because we won. Yeah I know Chronkite and the pinko media convinced everyone otherwise.

The press were impressed that the communists attacked EVERYWHERE simultaneously....but were over a period of 2-3 weeks KILLED EVERYWHERE.

Although there were over 500,000 US military in Nam and the communists fielded about 60-70,000...there were only about 30,000 US combat troops....who had to defend the supply/support tail as well as mount operations....we succeeded.

That huge supply/support tail kept us supplied with food, fuel, ammo, maintained our vehicles, and aircraft, manned our com links, treated our wounded and cared for our dead....

Prior to TET the communists had de facto control of about 600 municipalities and after controlled 6.

Then the diplomats and politicians did the surrender monkey act.

Later we had success in Grenada and Panama....crushing success.

Gulf I and II were military successes but diplomatic/political failures. Gulf II and Afghanistan were military successes but the foolish "nation building" was a waste of blood and treasure.

As far as WW2...the Soviets experience only started 2 years after the start (1941) but most German divisons were involved on the Russian front after that.....Allied strategic/tactical bombing of Germany and the railways/bridges had a signifigant influence on the supply train to those 80 German divisions on the Russian front.

German forces enjoyed short supply lines on the Western Front....compared to the Russian Front...

These various factors make it difficult to calculate the respective contributions of the different Allies to the success in the European theatre.

The real merit goes to Britain who stood very alone until the 1st Canadian Division arrived.

The Soviets had instant Allies who provided materiel support swiftly.

The Valantine tanks erected at the Angus Car Shops in Montreal all went to Russia.

The Can-Am Highway (Alaska Highway) was almost completed when Barbarrossa began....it's true purpose was to support the emergency airfields of the aircraft ferry route to Russia....a prudent precautionary move. Most of the Bell fighter aircraft production went to Russia by that route.
The Bell P39s the RAF received were, generously supplied to the Soviets by the Murmansk convoys.
It seems neither the USAAF or RAF were impressed with the Bell aircobra...

During WW2 Lend lease trucks, cargo aircraft, and boots moved the Red Army freeing the Russian industry to concentrate on building weapons and weapon systems such as tanks, warplanes and artillery. Food and fuel also streamed in through the White Sea and Persian Gulf Ports.

Oh Really? I know I can't manage to count very well without my fingers and toes, and I haven't been able to get past the number 1 for the Canadian divisions, but just exactly how was the Canadian military involved in the Pacific campaign? Better yet, how was the Canadian Army involved in Combat in Europe prior to the Dieppe debacle? Me thinks, you have the penis envy disease....yours is small, used very little, and is just an extra appendage. Meanwhile, keep calling us a derogatory name (Yankee) that we turned against our British "Masters." Sticks and stones....8-)

Hey, re-read my post. Then ask youself if it said anything about the war in the Pacific. Then do some research and find out how many active divisions the Canadian army had in Europe. Then feel stupid.

Jamie, four I believe. My old regiment was part of 10 Cdn Infantry Brigade of 4 Cdn Armoured Division.

I suspect that considering the size of the relative populations the effort in Europe was about equal.

Mountains and molehills.

:-)

The 'Great Generation' did what my generation of boomers have never been asked to do in Canada. Our American brothers have been carrying the load for decades. Hopefully they will listen to Ron Paul and relieve themselves, at least, of their European parasites.

Canada and the USA should abandon Nato the same way the Euros already have. In the latest fiasco, known as Libya, most Nato allies(?) either didn't participate or welched on their comittments. Maybe the Americans might have specific interests in the ME but Canada does not. The Libyan effort simply ensured continued oil supply for the same losers who are not paying their bills.

Twice North Americans have liberated Europe and my thinking is never again. Bye the bye, how much of the IMF Emergency funding of $450 billion is coming from Canada? PMSH said he would not contribute money to those bums and he did it anyway!

Mountains and molehills.

Aye, and I've met hundreds of Yanks with a great sense of humour who don't mind being called Yanks at all. Makes you wonder if Miss Becker is really a Yank...acting more like one of them easily offended socialist Canadians. ;)
