That was the last straw, or perhaps the 2nd or 3rd last straw. I once sent him a brilliant piece by Melanie Phillips and all I got back was some "research" into her ethnic origins -- she was a JEW, or was it her husband (don't remember now).
He was AMAZING on Jewish names and believed the Mossad was behind pretty much everything. And, of course, Jewish Hollywood and Banking were central to his worldview. It seems to be absolutely impossible to turn an anti-semite.
On the plus side, he thought "the jooos" prevented me from becoming a published songwriter a few decades back. Yeah, that was it, I thought -- it just couldn't be that I wasn't quite good enough or wasn't prepared to make the required personal/family sacrifices!

During a recent stay in Florida a group of five Senior Citizens from Quebec came into one of my usual restaurant haunts, very friendly. I was identified as being a Canadian by one of the restaurant owners and we had a chat about things back in Canada.
No identifiable accent among the three women or two men who spoke better gramatical English than me. However the inevitable item for discussion between individuals of our similar ages and different cultural backgrounds came up.
Quebec as a separate nation. My response was along the line of the situation at present is much closer to P.M. Diefenbakers concept of Canada than what was supposed to be the multi-cultural enigma we have experienced for the last fifty years.
This brought out the "old saw" Canada wouldn't be Canada without Quebec. My reaction was along the line of Canada would be so much more if it didn't have to carry the socialist baggage Quebec brought to the multi-cultural situation.
A stronger reaction than the discussion had up until then was; first socialism then you will be saying communism. My retort of socialism; communism; fascism, one of the ism's for sure raised several eyebrows of recognition among the five residents of Quebec.
The conversation petered out at that point, however on the way out of the restaurant one of the women stopped at the table where I was sitting, looked me in the eye and said, I am very glad to have met you, then left.
Not sure what this all means except maybe it was just a group of old timers finding past hurts, except just maybe, there are still some educated Anglo-Quebeckers or meticulously bi-lingual individuals who recognize both the indifference of English speaking Canada to Quebec's foibles and/or just how vulnerable Quebec is to truly going on it's own. Statist sociaism is a breeding ground for official anti-Semitism. After the fall of the soviet empire, there was a releasing of a lot of formerly state secrets with the west as a metter of good faith with the new Russian regime.
One of the things that stood out was the fact that the "Protocols of The Elders of Zion" (an articulate structured manifesto for Jewish world domination supposedly crafted in 1900s) was revealed to be completely fabricated by the KGB comminications division and circulated by them through hand to hand distribution in the Stalinist and post WWII era. This was done specifically to create public antipathy towards Jews and drive the open pratice of their religious rites underground.
The soviet state's thinking was two fold; first incited public anti-Semitism would drive as many Jews out of Russia as possible and second, it would silence and drive underground the ones who stayed. The state felt because Jews were so committed to their cultural tradition and religion they would never make good (trustworthy) soviet citizens who put the state above all.
That seems to bear out in every Marxist and communist or statist socialist nation - all seem to view Jews as a conformity problem so anti-semitism is either encouraged or never punished.
@ Occam, slight correction. Actually the Tsarist secret police, the Okhrana fabricated this forgery in an effort to bolster the sagging fortunes of Tsarism in the early 1900s. If Hollywood is dominated by Jews, are these Jews operating, qua Jews, or qua entertainment moguls. The "international Zionist conspiracy" theory falls apart when one looks at Jewish IQ's. Ashkenazi Jews have mean IQ's of 120 and, not surprisingly, one would expect a far greater number of Jews in occupations where reasoning ability is the primary qualification. Hence the "overabundance" of Jews in universities.
Those who are under the delusion that there is no genetic contribution to intelligence seem to endlessly rediscover "Zionist conspiracies". The only thing I can't figure out is if Jews are so smart, and dominate universities, why are universities so universally antisemitic?
The only "peace studies" you will ever need is to pick up a copy of Capitalism: The Unknown Ideal by Ayn Rand and read the essay titled The Roots of War. As she stated, the fundamental moral principle of a civilized (i.e., peaceful) society is that no person has the right to initiate the use of force or fraud on anyone else. That is for all intents and purposes the definition of peace.
I like the idea that fascism is national socialism whereas communism is international socialism; it certainly isn't far off the truth. What both of these nasty ideologies obviously have in common is that they subordinate the individual to the collective.
When collectivism and the worship of the mindless that spawns it (thanks to Immanuel Kant and G. W. F. Hegel) is finally put in the dustbin of history, we will have permanent peace.

I often wondered why my ancestors left Norway, now I know. A population that must be hip no matter what; killed local religions for Christianity, removed jews just cause it was cool, removed human rights to placate Nazis, romoved human rights to placate socialists,(yes that is redundant).
In fact acceptance of left wing extremism as "common knowledge" is not just a European phenomenon just watch CTV or CBC and the same anti-Jewish rhetoric is there. Of course they couch it in the "state of Israel" non-racial terms but the message is clear, the "Elders of Zion" are yet again trying to destroy our socialist utopia.
