In tonight's Tips music, from the 1960 album Crazy Times, Gene Vincent asks a rhetorical question that most of us have muttered under our breath on more than one occasion: Why Don't You People Learn To Drive?.

The comments are open, as always, for your Reader Tips.

Liberals held more secret meetings than Tories: analysis - The Canadian Press

Date: Sunday May. 13, 2012 2:51 PM ET

OTTAWA — Stephen Harper's Conservatives have been accused of using their majority to hide too much House of Commons committee business behind closed doors.

But an analysis of Library of Parliament data for the last decade shows the championship title for secretive committee work actually belongs to former prime minister Paul Martin's Liberals.

With Greece's elite losing hope of avoiding a Bucharest Christmas as soon as July, the rats continue to leave the sinking ship in their thousands, taking the nation's birthright (and the life savings of untold numbers of European pensioners) with them. Reuters reports:

Worsening financial and political turmoil in southern Europe caused a surge of interest in London property last month with buyers from Greece and Spain showing strongly among investors seeking a safe haven for their money.

The number of Greeks searching for homes costing more than 1.5 million pounds ($2.4 million) [emphasis mine] on the website of property agent Savills jumped 39 percent in April compared with the average of the preceding six months, the company said...

Reuters quotes a Greek emigre in London:

"There is real and justified fear on the streets of Greece at the moment. People are going hungry and those with money feel threatened by kidnap. My banker friends in Greece tell me about nine billion euros left the country after the election."

Most buyers are reluctant to talk publicly, said one estate agent who specialises in helping wealthy Greek buyers find London real estate.

"With the Greek tax system the way it is, these people don't want others to know how much they are moving out of the country or where they are putting it," he said.

no....no, no, no, NO !!!
varying output in that massive nuclear reactor in the sky isn't like that of other stars that scientists always take into account to define a 'habitable zone' when they look for new planets...that only affects THEM...our star has no effect at all on the Earth's temperature...it's only C02 and only manmade C02 that has any effect at all...gore and suzuki said so, therefore it must be so...or maybe it's dinosaur farts.

Research considers solar cooling period

http://www.stuff.co.nz/science/6896557/Research-considers-solar-cooling-period

German researchers considering a sudden drop in temperatures in Europe 2800 years ago and an increase in windiness are linking the changes to a 'solar minimum'.

Scientists at GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences analysed sediment in Lake Meerfelder Maar.

Dr Achim Brauer of the GFZ said the research showed there was an increase in humidity and windiness at the same time as the sustained reduction in solar activity - a solar minimum.

He said the measurements of lake sediment allow precise dating of short-term climate changes.

The theory that increased solar activity affects weather on Earth is relatively new.

It was first noticed in the 1970s when the American astronomer Jack Eddy noticed a strong correlation between historic weather records and accounts of solar activity.

He noticed that a 'quiet' sun correlates with cold weather and a 'manic' phase means warmer conditions.

Hmmm...I think our glorious Ministry of Education may have missed something important in their assessment of Sask's math curriculum.

"The government said the concerns, and a petition from a group called the Western Initiative for Strengthening Education in Math, led to an assignment for MLAs Russ Marchuk and Gene Makowsky to host eight consultation meetings with teachers and school administrators".

What about meeting with parents and the math profs who expressed concern? Is it really any wonder that the teachers and administrators who implemented Math Makes Sense support their own decision.

There is one mention of parents.

"The announcement on Friday afternoon added that some work will be done to help parents understand the new math curriculum, before it is introduced in more school divisions."

No, thanks. I've skimmed one of the textbooks and helping parents understand is not the problem. The problem is that the curriculum is fuzzy and not rigorous enough. I'll stick with teaching my kids real math after school and on holidays.

"Europe was on the brink of financial meltdown tonight as Greece’s political crisis threatened to bring down the single currency.

Opposition parties in debt-stricken Athens have until Thursday to form a government or face the turmoil of a fresh election.

The crucial next 48 hours will also see the first meeting between France’s new anti-austerity president Francois Hollande and Germany’s Angela Merkel tomorrow, which could see them clash over the future of the EU.

As the panic caused billions of pounds to be wiped of the share value of Britain’s biggest companies today, European finance ministers held emergency talks in Brussels to prepare for a doomsday scenario."

If The Truth Will Set You Free, What Will the MSM Do?

I was going to write a satire of the mainstream news media this week but the Washington Post beat me to it. Proving that they are spiraling toward irrelevance and bankruptcy the old fashioned way — by earning it! — the Post ran a hit piece on presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney that managed to be both irrelevant and suspect, if not altogether untrue.
