PEI Premier Joe Ghiz, speaking in Charlottetown at CUPE's annual convention:

"We…have to make sure that each and every Canadian gets to share in the wealth of our country. Today, in my opinion, Stephen Harper is hindering that view of Canada."

Yeah, Harper, quit hindering:

Canada booked its best two-month jobs gain in three decades with news today that the economy churned out 58,200 new jobs in April. Canadians found work in most regions of the country, many in the high-paying manufacturing, construction and resource industries.

I say PEI gets its proportional share of Canadian "wealth" as soon as they give up their disproportional share of power in the houses of Parliament.

If Gizz hopes to get western tourists to drop in, he better shut his mouth.

This came up as a "related item" in the free press article.

"The Manitoba economy shed nearly 2,000 jobs last month, bucking a trend which saw employment gains in seven other provinces and a surprisingly strong job-creation performance nationally."

EBD,

Joe Ghiz is dead these 15 years. Generally people like Joe are not allowed return to let the likes of the CUPE leadership know what they have to look forward to. The CUPE have the law and the prophets. Let them listen to them.

In the event Joe's son Robert was the one who spoke at the CUPE convention.

So, another 'fair share' kinda guy, I am now going to cancel a visit to PEI and head on down to Maine instead.

Lefties just don't get it. They think prosperity is all about wealth sharing. It isn't. At prosperity's root is wealth creation, and if wealth sharing interferes with that, there won't be much wealth to share. (sigh)...I know, preaching to the choir....

Remember the maritime mantra "A strong economy is a bad economy!"

PEI should be as relevant as, oh, 20% of Mississauga. Lovely place in the summer, though.

Unfortunately, Harper is not hindering that view of Canada-or at least that reality of Canada. He's throwing money around as much as anybody.

If BC had the number of MLAs per capita that PEI is blessed with, there would be close to 800. PEI is the most over-governed jurisdiction in Canada with the possible exception of Nunavut. A population of 140,000 (with 27 MLAs) doesn't justify provincial status. The Island could get by as a County with 2 MLAs and one MP within a single Maritime Province.

A Maritime Premier that wants free stuff - that's different!

at least 'bama's helping...
first buses and now this...

Energy generated will cost ratepayers almost
three times as much as energy from natural gas

LAS VEGAS — The company behind the recently opened Silver State North solar plant is eligible to receive up to $50 million in federal tax credits under the Obama administration’s “stimulus” legislation, even though the plant created only two full-time jobs.

According to a Department of Interior memo, Enbridge Energy Partners, a Canadian-based company with extensive energy holdings in the U.S. that purchased the Southern Nevada plant from Arizona-based First Solar, “can apply for payments of up to 30 percent of the eligible costs of the project — approximately $50 million.”

PEI, a lovely place who, like Saskatchewan for eons, its greatest export was it's people. The fact that Joe etal don't want to recognize is that like the Rock, without direct flights West and North, they are without an economy.

The Libs killed the onshore when trawlers etc. industry ships were allowed access to the fishery. Only in the East can the new Fishers collect EI stamps and have EI cheques sent out of country. Florida main locale in winter.

Far North Mines and NE Alta Oilsands main employers of the fly in, fly home east coasters. But politicians...slag anyone and everything that adds value and creates employment. Sad, but true.

My Grandfathers advice (one of seven PEI boys), eldest got the farm. All others went West or South, scenery is a glorious thing....but...it makes thin soup, and a damn poor roof. Go where the work is lad, succeed, and make a difference.

In any case, it's pandering plain and simple, after all we are entitled, those greedy "others", those non caring Ottawa crowd. Hows about someone look at the record of the past, the Atlantic Opportunity Co, all the other failed ventures (almost all the illustrious Lib Party Ventures) that made a select few "connected" people wealthy.

Versus the real world. Direct flights, the west crying for workers, and by and large, most East Coasters do have a work ethic. Opportunity lads. Hop on...the future awaits.

So, Joe....union pandering may make headlines, but it doesn't create value, tax base, or belief in a better future.

My two bits.

As Dick Slater pointed out , Joe has been dead 15 years. His son ROBERT is premier unless we are having converstions about the dead.

The premier of Canada's greatest failure at economic development is giving advice on economic development? All 10 provinces can't be on the dole. Some actually create wealth for PEI to consume. I imagine it's a really pretty place, probably a nice place to be buried.

The loudmouth at the Kids' Table is piping up again. What to do....

Those on the left are under the misapprehension that wealth is finite - that the pie can get no bigger and thus the just thing to do is to divide it more equally.

Apparently they have no knowledge of china - an economy that now rivals in size that of the US. Less than forty years ago it was economically less important than the state of Maine.

Thus the best - and only - way to improve the lot of those least wealthy is to unfetter markets and trade and grow the pie.

Ps- ghiz' dad - a signatory on the meech lake accord was an idiot. Apparently the apple didn't fall too far from the tree.

Those on the left are under the misapprehension that wealth is finite

It's odd, because they want government to spend like it's infinite.

Yes, let's have more equality -- one MP for Prince Edward Island, for example.

Ghiz just confirms that PEI aspires to be nothing more than a federally funded theme park.

With Ghizzy so out of the loop on the reality of our economy they better pray they don't have another potato blight......

Remember how the opposition to this day still criticise Harper for past statements about how one part of the country seems to be stuck in a culture of defeat?
Bet they don't even see the irony.

Holy mackerel, that eastern guy Ghiz sounds just like western girl Redford!

I don't think that Mr. Ghiz' vision of sharing in the wealth of the country had anything to do with working for that share. Therefore employment numbers and the economy in general really don't play into it.

Someone should have asked Mr. Ghiz to define "hindering" and how it applies to PMSH.

PEI would be better administrated as sort of a national park,

Joe Ghiz used to be a partner in the memorably-named law firm Scales & Ghiz. Sounded more like a fisheries waste product than a law firm.

Many on here don't seem to understand that it makes no dif what idiots say or do. If they are proven wrong then they simply start over with a new line of BS. If they ever actually have to pay the price and find a new line of work there are thousands willing to step in. Was Ghiz any different from John Crosby? Not much! A sad reality.

Last time I checked PEI collects more per capita income from Equalization that any other province. That doesn't include the billion $ bridge we built them either.
