Don't Tease Us Like That

Stursberg grimaces as he describes the impact of losing HNIC and its 450 hours of prime time Canadian programming. “What needs to happen is people need to have a serious conversation about the future of the CBC. The next few years are going to be very difficult. It’s at a point that, in three years, CBC might just collapse.

Please make the CBC go away before three years. Please.

If the only way the CBC can survive is by showing hockey, then its problems are self-evident. I *hope* the CBC loses its hockey broadcast rights. Let it show friggin' soccer, and then let it sink and die. Good riddance.

faster please, i prefer less taxes off my paycheck every 2 weeks.

"The No. 1 thing that needs to be done to fix CBC is for the government to choose (between) an elite CBC with ballet or a popular CBC. Choose. "

I think there may be a few more options to choose from.

I love that HNIC - a meritocratic, market driven testosterone fest that frequently has fistfights (the most anti-CBC thing possibly imaginable) draws more viewers than everything else combined. It would be a fitting stake to drive through the ceeb's heart.

The end of the CBC can't happen fast enough!
I haven't watched the CBC in over 10 years. While hockey maybe entertaining for those that haven't seen lacrosse, it's still no reason to tune into the CBC.
Both the CBC and CRTC should be in the dust bin of history...

SDA has had enough serious commentary on what to do with the CBC over the past few years.

But doesn't Toronto have enough condos in the downtown area already?

Party...my house....3 years from now...BYOB and Rider hat.

If recent ratings are around 1.5 million per game for all-US series it can hardly be true that Canadians really are "hockey mad".

I guess I should have included other choices: privatize, eliminate, downsize (get rid of TV and keep the much cheaper Radio-Canada and online news, for example).

Inevitably there will be cries of anguish about loss of Canadian culture and history. But if that is really the deal breaker then why not fund private companies to produce 1,2,10 good quality history or art production per year - ones that could be used in classrooms. Even if this costs a 100 million the CBC costs us about 1 billion so taxpayers save $900,000,000.

I am firmly behind saving $1B+ a year in taxpayer's money and putting this feckless, elitist broadcaster out of our misery. The natural argument will be that those in remote Canadian locations will not get important broadcast information. I say, buy them a satellite dish and basic subscription for their community centre and call it a day.

Serious conversation over. Conrad Black would be the perfect candidate to put in charge of the CBC while it's being privatized. He could probably abide by its original mandate at the same time and not let that get in the way of privatization.

"The next few years are going to be very difficult. It’s at a point that, in three years, CBC might just collapse."

May it be so.

Won't someone please think of the children!!??!!?! (heavy sarcasm)

The sort of collapse I would like to see for the CBC doesn't seem to have gotten through the filter. Ah well.

Short version: Shut down the CBC, including (especially) Radio-Canada, and replace it with nothing. The Queen doesn't need a radio station. What her ministers do need to do is see that the news media report news and not the propaganda of her enemies.

If this years Stanley Cup is not between LA & NY... The HNIC will join the CBC in the Ash Can..

What is missing is the passing & fast end-to-end play of real hockey players. The present art of Hockey has become stupid.. shot it in., pileup on the Boards, block all shots... 60 min of boring!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

JMHO

Hey, slow down, heathens, I watch Coronation Street on CBC...on the other hand, I'm sure it's only a matter of time until Corrie gets its own cable channel, right? Yeah, screw CBC.

It’s at a point that, in three years, CBC might just collapse.
Oh goody!!!!

Stursberg is echoing exactly what I said a few weeks back during the budget discussion. Most of you scoffed when I said that the $250 million budget cut by the gov't was probably enough to ensure the CBC couldn't retain HNIC, and that this would mean the end of them.

CBC's ultimate former insider agrees. It's over. It's simply a question of when the moose finally drops.

another Harper "hiden agenda"?????

"It’s at a point that, in three years, CBC might just collapse."

Is there anything I can kick or undermine to make it collapse faster? I already 100% boycott the CBC, but I'm ready to step up from militantly ignoring them to putting the boot in.

As an irrate Canuck Van all I can say is that it is the CBC's fault we're out! A little less cheering for LA and we would still be in there! :(

Seriously the faster the CBC goes down the better. It is simply a paycheck for 3/4's of the nutbars in this country. They rally around the 'hammer & sickle' without even knowing what that really means. A bunch of sycophants who cannot make their way in the real world and have every justification for why the taxpayer should pack their lunch.

Honestly I watched the TSN playoff broadcasts and that old Trail boy, Ray Ferraro, does just fine.

This guy is hawking a book that he hopes those who hate the CBC will buy , he's gonna tel you whatever it is you want to hear - wishful thinking at best.

The sooner the CBC falls, the better.

Rich - I will attend your party, with beer, and a Lions hat to offset all that rider green. Hopefully before 3 years. :)

Memo to LCBennett: Be careful what you wish for. If the RdE for the CBC is "to Promote Canadian Culture and Values" then wouldn't you expect that only those with an agenda will be doing the promoting?
