Add on the helicopter pilots,mechanics, other support staff,and the Bear-Care folks should provide Nfld. with about two hundred well-paid jobs!

Anything less,and I will be forced to conclude none of the activist A-W organizations really give a damn about the bears.

Trained wildlife staff were there, there just weren't helicopters available. Policy states that the bears must be tranquilized from the air via helicopter. If there's nothing available the only option (unfortunately) is to shoot them.

It's kind of sad that I rely on Kate and Kathy Shaidle for accurate coverage of what's happening with polar bears. I can't rely on the mainstream media.

What a wonderful thing it would be if there were people we could pay, via subscriptions, to tell us reliably the truth about things.

(Oh and I'm a luke-warmist who believes that human activity, in part via GHG emissions, is warming the globe, though likely not to a disastrous degree. I'm pretty sure such an admission will be met with polite indifference or polite engagement rather than extreme contempt the way it would be elsewhere).

dmorris & Dante, never let a good crisis go to waste. Don't ask for them to fund the "tranquilize the bears and keep them safe" group, ask for volunteers. Equip them with GPS and full-time video surveillance. Hopefully no-one will actually get killed/eaten, and the "save nature" folks will realize that "save me from nature" is much more important. It would, of course, be too much to ask to mandate that at least one member of the board of Greenpeace / WWF / David Suzuki Foundation / etc be with the darters to show how committed the group is to preserving these huge meat-eating juggernaughts er, I mean, cuddly, fragile co-habitants of Gaia (damned strike-through wouldn't work).

Holmwood, probably many of we CAGW skeptics could be classified as "luke-warmists". It's entirely possible that changes in land-use patterns, and the sheer amount of waste heat discharged by our industrial civilization may be having a slight warming effect.

What we skeptics mainly take issue with: "warming is unprecedented"; no, it's not, there's plenty of evidence in both the historic and geologic record of past periods of even greater warmth than we currently enjoy. And CO2 has been vastly higher, and life on Earth thrived when it was so. And warmer is better, climate-wise, for mankind than cold. So, even if our activities are bringing about a small degree of warming, it's a good thing, and not a reason to throw a monkey wrench into the gears of our economy.

Only Aboriginals can legally hunt polar bears. For the rest of us, we can shoot them only in self-defence. The carcass BTW then becomes property of the nearest Aboriginal band.
