Did you see the leg kick Redford had while addressing Ms Smith? That along with the bizarre eye popping on the part of the premier really spoke volumes. Ms Smith was cool and collected throughout while Redford was angry and looked like she was gonna start yelling at any moment. That she didn't may speak to her relative composure but her body language was decidedly odd and at times indicative of someone not used to having people question her integrity.
Raj Sherman is clearly some kind of malfunctioning robot and the dipper somehow managed to appear a reasonable man. If I were a betting man, I would lay money that the NDP is making life easier for the Wild Rose as they are their only hope for having any influence at all ever in Alberta should it be a minority WR win and the NDP winds up holding the balance.
One thing is clear after this debate and that is that Danielle Smith will be the next premier of Alberta.
Redford looks like that every day in the legislature when she is getting grilled. Its her default composure. She really is a mean nasty person, and her 'handlers' really had to coach it out of her.
Redford brings Toronto to Edmonton.
That was the gist of her message. Be less Albertan , more Toronto liberal. Along with her I am more tolerant than you even if I have to jail your mind to prove it.
From what Ethical base does her toleration come from. Where everyone else is wrong but her?
I haven't been watching Sun news since their signal is no longer available over the air, but the video above shows how amateurish they are.
Gunter keeps making the point that the body language was important. So what does Sun news show? A few seconds of Redford looking scolding, and THEN NOTHING BUT THE TALKING HEADS OF THREE SUNS NEWS THINGIES. No pictures of Smith or anyone else for us to compare. The debate wasn't televised here in Ontario, so I had no idea what Smith sounded or looked like, let alone what she had to say about her policies or Redford's.
Smith was great. Seemed confident and showed class. She will be the next premier.
Mason seemed more intelligent than either Redford or Sherman, and definately more fiscaly conservative than Redford, which is incredable considering that he is NDP.
Sherman acted more like he was giving an interview rather than being engaged in a debate. The only person he could get a rise out of was the Red Queen. Sherman is all about Sherman.
Redfords performance underlined why she should not be premier. She cannot handle any pressure at all and seemed ready to lose it at any moment. I found myself asking "How did this clown make to being a premier of Alberta?" God only knows what her policies are as she changes them every press release.
The over-riding aspect of the debate compared to the federal election debate less than a year ago is that none of the leaders were familiar faces. It is quite likely that the vast majority of viewers had never seen any of them speak onscreen at length before tonight.
In this environment the calm cool - reassuring - tone and posture of ms smith won the debate. There were no knockout punches on the issues (apart from a couple of snappy one liners perhaps) so the person who looks the most like a leader wins. Barely a frame went by where ms smith did not look and act and talk like a leader. This must have been hugely reassuring for the large majority of Albertans (well over 50% in all polls) who want to see a change in government.
Danielle's skin must have been crawling standing so close to the three communists.
Mine was just watching.
When the WRP gets into office we are going to have to offer all Progressive Lefties one way bus tickets out of Alberta like Klein did with the eastern and west coast welfare bums. Should be pretty cheap this time around though.
The opposition parties ganged up on Redford because they all had something to gain: Libs and NDP are only in the mix in Edmonton, polls show PCs are leading in Edmonton, or at least, tied with WR. The votes the Libs and NDP can scavenge are those from the red tories who may flee the carcass of the dying PCs.
Everyone I talk politics with is a Danielle Smith fan but will not vote for the local candidate. Some are even relieved an independent conservative from the second largest town in the riding has entered the race so they can vote for him. The WR candidate himself said the independent candidate entered the race because "he doesn't like me". Well that view is shared by many more in the largest centre in the riding. The PC candidate is very popular with those that know him personally. This will be a great test of how much the leader carries the riding.
I thought The RED Queen was going to lose it when her eyes starting blinking like Nanzi Pelosi's, and her face was twitching like a spastic during some segments. REDford is toast!
Sad to see what has happened to the party of Ralph, when Ralph had a few, and pissed off the whiners in the media by telling the useless to go to work, he was at his best, then the screamers in the press made him quit tippling and he was never the same, took Alberta from Gettys-berg to profitability. Ed has done untold damage to this once proud party, they got a lot done over the years, Albertas the best place in the country and for that they deserve some credit. Yea you can all dump on me, but the same media that stampeded Ed into "our fair share" and "no H1N1 vaccine" etc, is the same media that is leading this current stampede. They should have learned that a 3rd place pick didn't work once, why try it again.
What the hell was 'twitchy's' problem?? That was ghastly....Danielle came across wonderfully....but that ghastly ogre to her left....ouch!...twitching every which way, those eyebrows never stopped dancing around...wtf???....this is an alleged 'Premier'?...i half expected a 3rd eye to pop out of her forehead,,,,,
I don't watch CBC, so I've no idea what was said on the news there, but CTV News tonight was saying the election race is a 'virtual dead heat' and 'there was no clear winner' in the debate.
REDfraud looked like a rat caught in the flashlights glare in a grain bin. She has the most unusual habit of squinting and then opening her eyes very wide like she is going to emit laser rays. And she does it constantly when she is under pressure. She is terrified of Wildrose's People Democracy. She does not trust Albertans, and does not think we are grown up adults who should be allowed to make some Democratic choices ourselves. The leftwing in Alberta and Canada are just petrified that Wildrose will let the taxpayers bring forth our own citizen iniated legislations or recall our MP's or force referendums on Government in Alberta. On the conscience issue, Danielle pointed out properly that Conscience Rights are right there in the Charter of Rights. Right at the top. REDfraud needed to land a knockout and she didn't have the juice. Mason and Raj went after her in a clawhammer and icepick attack which threw her off her track. Danielle looked calm and collected and very Leaderlike. REDfraud looked like a cornered rat caught in the grain bin, and two farmers going after her with a grain shovel and a pitchfork. Priceless...
Was at a political update from our municipal, provincial and federal representatives last night here in Don Valley West Toronto. Our Liberal Kathleen Wynne was attempting to defend McGuinty's record and gushed on how they were tackling the problems they created in the first place.
She mentioned, with a real sneer, the Wild Rose Party linking them with the "Republicans" in the US so it seems a shoe in for Danielle Smith.
I just despise the left like Wynne as they think its just a game and after they ruined Ontario's economy all we really need is a group hug to make it all better.
I watched the debate on CTV. Can't say there was a clear winner in the back and forth arguments of the debate per se, but given that Danielle Smith came across as very calm, professional and plainly well versed on her platform and its implications, she projected the image of someone who's ready to be premier of the province. Since the debate thereby worked to her advantage over the rather catty Redford, I'd say Smith was the winner.
If this were a presidential election our choice would be between a UN lawyer with tyrannical tendencies, a loony Doctor with damning documents he won't release, a bus drive/union type made good, and a photogenic media personality. Unfortunately it comes down to a choice of 'least harm' not most good.
Off the top I would say that the tyrannical UN lawyer is likely to do the most harm which is born out by experience. The loony doctor is plain loony and I have no idea where he will go next. The bus driver wants to play with the royalties again. (Pssst Brian there is a reason Special Ed has been replaced as premier). Which leaves the smile in a pretty dress. She says a lot of the right things so I guess by default.....
My position on "conscience rights" is as follows: I do not care a "rat's ass" as to what you are, Gay, Lesbian, Trans Gendered, aboriginal, non-white, white - as long as your beliefs do not cost me as the Taxpayer, money. As a same-sex couple, you should want someone who supports your marriage, to marry you - you should not FORCE someone who disagrees with you, to marry you. Same for abortion provision. There are plenty of marriage commissionaires, doctors, pharmacists, who have no beliefs, who will be willing to help you. End of Rant, thank you.
Redford reminded us of Chief Inspector Dreyfuss ... remember him from the Pink Panther movies? All that twitching can't be good for a person. Is there a doctor in the house??
Unfortunately it comes down to a choice of 'least harm' not most good.
Unfortunately. Nobody there with real world experience beyond the world of words and academia and theory. One couldn't count a doctor as being real world. They all work for the government.
Even, under WR, voter initiatives would have to be vetted by our "superiors".
Edmonton turns PC blue - it's official, the APCP is the new defacto liberal party of Alberta. I hope WR make a sweep into power with a convincing majority - 60+ seats.
Listening to CHQR Friday morning ... it's beyond delightful to hear Albertans providing their analysis of what happened in last night's debate. Hopefully it won't be too much longer before everyone is singing this to Premier Mom.
Redford has a mild form of Tourette's Syndrome. That's too bad, because the condition has no effect on personality, but people react badly to anyone who suffers from it. I just have an image of her making a speech, and going off on a tangent, screaming sh*t, f**k, c**t!
I was puzzled by the other two guys on the stage. Who are they, and what were they doing in a political debate?
What I want to know is what Danielle Smith was doing in the same room as that pack of non-entities. What she really had to gain is beyond me. Danielle has done a fine job of selling Wildrose to the people of Alberta in any of a number of ways, and didn't need the help of Alberta's eastern-controlled media to organize a "debate" to help get her message out.
Albertans have heard the message, like what they hear, and are determined to consign Alison Redford and the PC party as we know it to the dustbin of Alberta history. Nothing short of catastrophe will stop them. (The ECM's masters have figured that out, though the ECM will never admit it.) The eastern-controlled media has been Wildrose's real opponent from day one. The ECM only bothered holding a "debate" in Alberta in the vain hope Danielle would say something really idiotic and throw away the election if she showed, or of being able to call her "arrogant" or "over-confident" if she didn't.
Frankly Danielle should have left the three stooges to write the next night's material for Ezra Levant and gotten on with something far more useful---like preparing for government. Top of her list should be how a Wildrose government will deal with the ECM. They've only gotten started stirring up trouble, and they can't be as easily shown the door as the PCs.
(No, I didn't watch last night. The debate wasn't broadcast on television where I live, and there is much more entertaining stuff to watch on the Internet than footage of someone shooting fish in a barrel.)
How do you feel about them farmers today ? have you had any milk, bread , poultry, pork,,beef, vegitables, or fruit product's latley that were not grown by yourself?
Loved the Liberal poser with the heavy Indian accent telling a lifelong Albertan that "this is Alberta not Alabama" - LOL
Yea, and what the F8ck is wrong with Alabama anyway? - I've been to both Alabama and India, and know dammed well as an Albertan where I'd live if given a choice between the two.
This ahole was born in India and grew up in BC and chose to move to Conservative Alberta – Not BC, Not India, he made a personal choice to move to CONSERVATIVE Alberta. Now he tells Albertan’s that he knows what’s best for us, what a freak.
Sherman ,IMHO,was using the 'Alabama' reference to basically condemn the Wild Rose party and it's policies as 'white trash'.
Being that he is a 'Liberal of a different colour' it is a perfectly acceptable thing to say in most circles. Calling him on it is only done by racists.
IMHO he was doing what the left does best, accuse others of racism to get what they want instead of using commonsense and earned credibility.
Albertans have never owned slaves dumbass your white guilt BS won't work on us like it does in Socialist white-guiltville. Although we know deep down "Albertan's" were not his target audience.
BTW - he should visit Alabama, it ain't the 1940's down there anymore - but again he knows that full well. The best part for him is he always has a home in BC or India to run back too once the damage is done, while the rest of us have nowhere else to run from people like him.
It doesn't surprise me that Redford and Joe Clark are best-est buds; the hubris for no apparent reason, a lack of common sense, and a shortage of sharp political instincts are traits they share. Yes I know that "sticks are easily found to beat dogs" but it looks like it's back to her old job for Alison Redford.
“...but it looks like it's back to her old job for Alison Redford.”
Yea, working for the socialist UN – you just can’t make this kind of crap up!
“In 2005, she was appointed by the UN Secretary General as an International Election Commissioner for the administration of Afghanistan's first parliamentary elections. She also worked as an advisor to the Privy Council Office on Canada's future involvement in Afghanistan.”
"Frankly Danielle should have left the three stooges to write the next night's material for Ezra Levant and gotten on with something far more useful"
Participating in a debate, no matter how farcical, seems to be standard procedure in any election campaign. Opting out is an invitation for criticism from one's opponents and their minions.
My MP always chooses to pass on the invitation to participate in the charade organized by unions, the media and other left-leaning buffoons since it will invariably degenerate into a debacle complete with cat-calling goons provided by the usual suspects. She is a hard worker and is very accessible to her constituents so lowering herself to the level of her opponents would accomplish absolutely nothing other than afford an opportunity for a piling-on session.
For this, she is vilified ad nauseam by the local media. Funny thing though. She keeps getting elected.
Ed Minchau, I saw a wild rat once in an outhouse in B.C. on a camping trip when I was a child.
We had white lab rats in Biology 20 at Sir Winston Churchill High in Calgary in the late '70s.
If the poll results Gord Tulk linked to were the polling results on the 23rd, Wild Rose would take everything outside Edmonton (68 seats) and the 19 seats in Edmonton would be 4-way horse races. If the results hold steady or improve for Wild Rose over the next week, the PCs could end up the fourth-place party.

Was kind of hoping to hear more WR policy and less 'the PCs are evil because...' from Danielle. But, I'm still voting Wildrose next week.
Ezra Levant was twittering like crazy this past evening. Here's one of his gems:
"Really, all three of the opposition parties are to the right of Redford. #abvote"
The thing is, can anyone reasonably argue that this is untrue?!
Watched the debate at the local Wildrose office. Had a great time,it was one big redford pile on.
Stick a fork in it this election is done Wildrose 55 seats +. Calgary 12 rual 40 edmonton 3. See how easy that was.
I haven't been watching Sun news since their signal is no longer available over the air, but the video above shows how amateurish they are.

All redford does is scold if she every looked plesent it would be Front page.
When redford is done here April 23 in the year of our lord 2012 we can ship her to Ontario and they can her on the telly and she can scold you.
Look for a rout on the 23rd.
Danielle's skin must have been crawling standing so close to the three communists.
Mine was just watching.

REDfraud looked like a rat caught in the flashlights glare in a grain bin. She has the most unusual habit of squinting and then opening her eyes very wide like she is going to emit laser rays. I salute our new ovelords.
Seriously, they had better be conservative. Alberta, indeed all Canada, needs less government. Perhaps they may give the feds a nudge.
How do you know if there is a doctor at your party?
He'll tell you.
Dr. Sherman proved that old joke last night.

I think that in light of the debate and Suzuki's rant,we need a new provincial song.
" Sweet home Alaberta
Where the skies are so blue
Sweet home Alaberta
Does your conscience bother you"
It needs some work, but not as much as Redford.
I watched the debate on CTV. Best line came from Mason when he read from Hansard, relating to something Redford said in the legislature. Redford said Hansard lied. What a snake.
Interesting, Ms. Smith said she doesn't need a judge to tell her what to do, regarding cabinet pay...yet voters do, regarding referendums.
This holier than thou stuff needs to stop. Maybe that should be the first referendum.
What does that rug riding NDP have against Alabama? Not the smartest thing to say, about the child of our neighbour, and trading partner.
Listening to CHQR Friday morning ... it's beyond delightful to hear Albertans providing their analysis of what happened in last night's debate. Hopefully it won't be too much longer before everyone is singing this to Premier Mom.

"...looked like a cornered rat caught in the grain bin..."
Albertans don't know what that looks like. I've never seen a live rat in my whole life (and only one dead one, down in Florida).
