"As soon as the PCs made Ed Stelmach the leader, I knew they were toast."
I fixed it for ya.
When I saw this ad a few minutes ago via Twitter, I immediately thought of my 2 daughters and the increasing attack on men. I work my fricken arse off for my wife and girls and I can't be more pissed off than seeing crap like this. They will say it is a joke, but they are the joke and the war on Dad's is NO joke.
Lukaszuk was looking for confrontation; since there was a Wildrose sign on the lawn he found it. I'm thinking he wanted a bit of a fight/argument so he could run to the media saying that Wildrose voters are crazy and fringe.
Seems like this is backfiring on him. I would bet he loses his seat. He'll have more free time to spend taking care of his lovely hair.
Wow -- a 70's-era Torontonian's conception of what "your father" would look like, and an appalling, amateurish, ugly, and unbalanced layout. There *must* be a saboteur in the party.
Btw, does anyone know who that cross-dressing Irishman on the bottom right is?
How the hell can anyone be a progressive AND a conservative at the same time? Politically speaking, that has got to be the dumbest concept in recent history. Either that or we should simply assume that if anyone feels a need to stick that first word in the front, they're not really serious about the second one.
I have knocked many a door for candidates and when I saw a sign of the opposing party on a lawn, I walked by and never approached the door. Why would I? Obviously the person is with the other party so why get into an argument. This guy was looking for a confrontation.
I'm not a graphic designer, but I play one on the internet: isn't the hip, cool politician on the bottom supposed to look younger than the 'dad' in the TV?
One of the best political screens I ever saw was when Ezra had the shotgun blog and posted the LPC platform on his blog the night before the LPC released it. (I think it was 2006) There's this pic of that kid from the wonder years with the big mole on side of his face.
@Edward Teach: "that has got to be the dumbest concept in recent history"
Ah, but it isn't recent history. The name "Progressive Conservative" evolved from the 1920s Progressive Party, which was an agricultural protest party. The ideological window-dressing was different, but many of the causes are the same as today's conservatives (note the small 'c').
"Progressive" meant something different 100 years ago than it does now. For that matter, the old CCF was considerably closer to the Reform Party than today's NDP is. Agrarian populism has been a recurrent theme in the West and parts of Ontario, and is why the West keeps creating protest movements against the Eastern Elite -- and why for a while the West was mostly split between the NDP and Reform.
"The origins of the Progressive Party can, in many ways, be traced to the politics of compromise under Prime Minister Sir Wilfrid Laurier. The most important issue to farmers in western Canada at the time was free trade with the United States. The National Policy implemented by Prime Minister Sir John A. Macdonald in the 1890s forced farmers to pay higher prices for equipment, and to sell their produce for less. After World War I, however, neither of the major political parties supported free trade.... This mix of ideology and discontent led to discussion of forming an independent party, especially in the 'Grain Growers Guide', a magazine of the day. The first organizations of agricultural protest were the farmers’ organizations such as the Manitoba Grain Growers Association and the United Farmers of Alberta."
This guy going to the Police while trespassing.Against a dying old man redefinitions the word Wimp. That he went to the police at all shows hes a Ken doll. This is the left in action.
Sorry to disagree with you antelope but the Progressive party always was a party of the leftist/humanist side. They arose as precursors to the CCF and the NDP. Their philosophy would not have opposed Hitler or Stalin. As George H Bush called it they were a party of death insofar as they believed in the here and now perfectibility of mankind. The modern feminist/gay movement and even eugenics/abortion programs had their cradle in the Progressives.
Knight99, could the Redford team do a better job of self-destructing than labeling their Education minister as a "victim"? (Susan Elliot is a real genius...)
Earlier today I went over to the Huffpo site and they had a picture of the provincial hag hectoring Albertans about non violence. The Huffpo comments were anti hag! When a Progressive like the provincial hag loses support from Huffpo readers its really over.
As a side note: When you commit political Hara-kari like the Alberta Pretend Conservatives are doing now are you supposed to twist the knife at the end of its plunge or do you just fall over dead?
When you commit political Hara-kari like the Alberta Pretend Conservatives are doing now are you supposed to twist the knife at the end of its plunge?'
~Joe
They don't use a knife, they use a spoon, ...it hurts more.
Silly me Oz of course they don't use a knife they have banned all sharp objects. I also hear that the next time they send out tiny Tom they are going to tape bubble wrap around his Styrofoam suit of armor so old cancerous asthmatics can't hurt him as badly.
must be done by a teacher style cut and paste with cardboard and glue , no wonder she is offering all the teachers $500 tax free allowance
just a little taste of MLA style pork and a little thankyou from Allison Redflag for their support at the last minute after only polling 19% on the first ballot.
So not only are the PCs repeating Wildrose's attack lines in their own ad, they are entirely missing the point. Voters are not mad at the PCs because they are too much like they use to be. They are mad at them because they are NOT like they used to be, that is, conservatives.
Danielle gets this and used that line as an effective attack. The PCs didn't get it and are using the same line to commit harikari.
To Brad in Waterloo: Yes, same here. I was genuinely surprised to learn this was a real ad. I thought that the bearded hipster inside the old TV was supposed to be ironic-retro, I thought the photo of Redford was chosen as deliberately unflattering, and I thought her triple string of pearls was a photoshop. The ineptitude on display here is awesome. You have to go back to Kim Campbell to see a flameout like this (and as another poster noted, Mulroney + Campbell = Stelmach + Redford) although the Christy Clark show in B.C. is getting close.
There's a very interesting thing about this campaign. The PCs are supposed to be the professionals in contesting an election. Supposed to have all of the money necessary, have all of the expertise and discipline to run a clean campaign. Instead it's been one ghastly screw-up after another.
WR on the other hand is supposed to be the amateurs. Like Keystone Kops, they're supposed to be stumbling around, having rookies say all kinds of inappropriate things. Instead, they've stayed on message. Smith's poise confronted by the personal attack on her fertility was the perfect riposte.
The PCs must truly be wondering what hit them, how they could go from heroes for 41 years to zeroes in just weeks. That light at the end of the tunnel really is an oncoming train.
Yup, John Tory, Hudak, Stelmach and Redford must be recruiting their advisory staff from the same source: the ones who didn't get a job with the Liberals and NDP.
So mini Tom got beat up on a doorstep by an elderly, cancerous asthmatic. Maybe we should all chip in and buy his a styrofoam suit of armor and roll of bubble wrap to overlay the styrofoam.
Oh well although Alberta and South Africa don't want Red Ali all is not lost. I hear that Zimbabwe will soon be looking for a new leader. You go grrl! (oh and take mini Tom with you please. He's an embarrassment to all Alberta males)
Good point. I still have a hard time believing this is a real ad. Hard to imagine a well oiled machine coming up with this.
Any small-c conservative will take away the message that "Yup, we took over, and are totally changing direction. Alberta was never conservative anyway."
It'll only work if 60% of Albertans were really left wing kooks all along...

As soon as the PCs made her the leader, I knew they were toast. It was like saying, "Hi Alberta, welcome to Ontario."
Tim Hudak all over again.
Why doesn't Lukaszuk just stop it? Apologize for being an A-hole, tell the police to leave the old fart alone, and get on with losing the election.

Wow, Mr. Lukaszuk obviously takes his weenie anti-bullying program very seriously. How politically correct! A mans man in the new age.
im with Edward Teach.
The PCs self suicided when they picked a leader who came from the HRC - the very embodiment of everything Albertans loath about government.
So far out of touch with the pulse of main street their every reflex in this desperate campaign is suicidal.
Personally I hope Lukaszuk gets frog walked off the property of every where he door knocks. What a swell headed ass.
I'm not a graphic designer, but I play one on the internet: isn't the hip, cool politician on the bottom supposed to look younger than the 'dad' in the TV?

My father didn't look like a dweeb; is Alison Redford a man hater?
Nice to mole you! Nice to meet your mole! MOLE.
"That he went to the police at all shows hes a Ken doll."
Based on the manliness he displays, I'd certainly assume he's hung like one.
Wow! - how the names have changed that stop by here since 2006. Hardly remember most of them. Just an observation. Sorry if I'm o/t.
....mmmMmMMOle...
Whatever happened to original bob?
..yeah..?...
Disgusting.
Way to push an old dying medicated senior in their last bit of life PC party.
Drag em through the courts, and make em pay.
This is the party to run Alberta's medical, legal, and seniors programs?
Like bloody hell.
That advert just might work if Redford were running against a middle aged socon white guy in Manitoba or BC. But as-is it's high comedy!
Most young people probably wouldn't know what that box'y thing around the cool looking nerd is anyway.
Those that do probably think it's retro cool.
The Angela Landsbury grandma lookalike, chained up in the pearl necklace, not so much.

Is it just me our would it be really funny if all the senior citizens in Lukaszuks' riding took over his MLA office "occupy" style.
dwright
Incredible. "Not your father's PC Party" is actually a line Danielle used in a recent speech to criticize the current PC party.
http://www.wildrose.ca/speech/speech-to-the-edmonton-leaders-dinner/

“I’m a 67-year-old dying of liver failure, both my knees are shot … and [Mr. Lukaszuk] claims I beat him up.”
Give the man a uniform, he could be a beat cop enforcing property rights against errant politicians.
Headline should be:
67 YEAR OLD DYING OF LIVER FAILURE HAS MORE SPUNK THAN PC PARTY.
Oh man you're killing me...

Good for you Knacker, men have been neutered by this crop of educational dead beats and estrogen milk duds.
Once again, someone rips off the "This is not your father's Oldsmobile" slogan. And where is Oldsmobile today?
Yeah, "your father's PC party" won a lot of elections.
Btw, does anyone know who that cross-dressing Irishman on the bottom right is?
lol EBD!

Wow. That's a surprisingly atrocious ad.
Personally, MY father signed up to go shoot Nazis when he turned 18 so if it's not his PC Party I don't want to have anything to do with it.
And that woman is weird looking. Some kind of passive/aggressive alpha b1tch in search of some poor b@st@rds to lord it over.
Where's my iron-studded cluebat?
