Not my kind of music--but thanks anyway. Tis the thought that counts.

Levon Helm shall be missed.

Such an emotional performances of "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" in "The Last Waltz".

Came across this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1xqEWZRvbhA

It has a really good beat.

I had a chance to talk with Helm in Regina when the Band (minus Robertston) did a tour in the early 1980s, but missed it.
We were taking our seats front row when I saw a guy talking to someone standing on stage. He looked familiar, but I actually thought it was a maintenance man, judging by the plain white shirt and dark pants, and unassuming attitude.
Turns out it was Levon. That'll teach me to judge books by covers, etc..
RIP.

"Richard von Coudenhove-Kalergi's Pan-Europa
as the Elusive "Object of Longing""

"The Austro-Hungarian intellectual Richard von Coudenhove-Kalergi (1894-1972) saw the end of World War I as the ideal time to finally create the centuries-old "object of longing," i.e., a peaceful, united Europe (Coudenhove-Kalergi, Pan Europe 8). In doing so, he inspired a large additional body of literature and a movement for a unified Europe which exists, albeit in a much-reduced role, down to the present day. I locate his magnum opus, Pan-Europa1 in the continuum of German-language treatments of Europe as a political project.2 This interwar text is especially interesting for scholars as it represents a rare bourgeois dissent against nationalistic pretensions prevalent in many other Weimar-era political treatises on the cultural position of Germany and Europe in the wider world. Pan-Europa contains much of interest beyond utopian policy prescriptions for interwar European statesmen, illuminating discussions on the pace, scope, and goals of European integration into the present day."

"Against the EU? You're plainly a homophobe!"

"Michael Cashman has written an unintentionally hilarious blog, a series of Spartish adjectives hurled indiscriminately at Tories: 'homophobic', 'disgrace', 'neanderthal' etc. The Labour MEP is agitated – or, rather, is pretending to be agitated – because we failed to back a motion which he claims represents 'mainstream views on LGBT rights'. He makes a point of singling me out by name. (The old boy often does this: it's what Bridget Jones calls 'mentionitis'.)

Hmm. Let's review the evidence for the Hannan-is-a-homophobe trope."

Levon Helm was the best: superlative musician, first-class actor, and by the looks of it, a superb human being.

Helm had an innate dignity. He was beautiful inside and out. I was fortunate to have seen him with The Band in Toronto in the summer of 1970, as part of the Festival Express, and at Massey Hall in 2010, with John Hiatt. Watching his joyful and exuberant playing made me happy.

Rock on, Levon.

If you haven't listened to Music From Big Pink in a while, do yourself a treat

Wow,I thought my memories were from way back.

I caught The Band along with CSNY and Jesse Colin Young way back when at Varsity Stadium, maybe 74. Great outdoor show even with the rain.

And the black community wonders why they get no respect and people, including their own, fear them. Is it any wonder those who can get out of SA are leaving?

"Law enforcement is only one part of South Africa’s rape crisis, with more than 56,000 cases reported to police last year. But a 2009 study by the government’s Medical Research Council revealed that only one in 25 rapes was reported to the police. The same survey found more than one-quarter of South African men admitted to raping a woman or girl.

A South African website dedicated to rape victims said about 450,000 rape cases went unreported each year. “It is estimated that a woman born in South Africa has a greater chance of being raped than learning how to read,” the website said, adding, “[In] a survey conducted among 1,500 schoolchildren in the Soweto township, a quarter of all the boys interviewed said that ‘jackrolling’, a term for gang rape, was fun.”

In 1927, the American Army developed “War Plan Red,” a comprehensive strategy to foil any British expansion into its long-former colony.

...six years before War Plan Red was drafted — Canada developed its own plan, named Defence Scheme No. 1.

Climate Alarmist Calls For Burning Down Skeptics’ Homes

“Let’s start keeping track of them…let’s make them pay”

http://www.infowars.com/climate-alarmist-calls-for-burning-down-skeptics-homes/

Writing for Forbes Magazine, climate change alarmist Steve Zwick calls for skeptics of man-made global warming to be tracked, hunted down and have their homes burned to the ground, yet another shocking illustration of how eco-fascism is rife within the environmentalist lobby.

Maybe the IWON president had these folks in mind when he signed NDAA. Mitt likes that NDAA power too, said he would have voted for it , had he been in congress. When an elected official (President) can arrest imprison any citizen indefinitely without a trial, a lawyer or a phone call - you have a Totalitarian State. Stalin/Lenin/Castro/Mao kept in power via this type of terrorism. The first step has been taken....

Killing/arresting all AGW deniers could be used as a 'test run'; much like WHO used the 'anti tobacco fanaticism' as a test run for control of the health/lives of peons. Fat people and Health Food stores are next on the WHO hit list. WHO/elitists/UN does not like 'shirkers' any better than Stalin did; the former do their evil slower and under stealth (pretending to pander to 'mass concern').

Plea for info. - does anyone know an authoritative take-down of Warren Buffett's claim that his secretary is being taxed at a higher rate than he is? A lefty prof of my aquaintance was going on about this yesterday, and I said I'd send him a refutation. I did, but it was from Hot Air via Shaidle (who quoted Limbaugh), and it seems that "in my view blogs are not reliable or authoritative sources. Anyone can say anything without corroborating documentation". (As far as I know Buffett had no "corroborating documentation", but that's obviously not to the point.) A link to a dead tree article would be ideal.

(This professor attributes opposition to Obama to "racism" and "brainwashing". He and his wife, who is admittedly highly-medicated for depression and possibly in the early stages of dementia, just got back from the southern U.S.; they were talking about how charming it was that people there addressed her as "Miss Firstname"; he said he thought that that was originally a black custom; she added, to the best of my recollection [I really should make a habit of wearing a wire] "but the black people are very nice there, they know their place". I'm still not convinced I wasn't hallucinating.)

Anyway, any help greatly appreciated.

personally, I hope the next time he shows up to make a speech the crowd starts throwing hot dogs and barking....
