So let's play a little thought experiment.

Story: Dick Cheney's trial starts.
Story: John Edwards' trial starts.

Can you imagine the explosion in the media if the former were the headline?

The endless editorials talking about the culture of corruption in the Republican party? How the Republicans are unfit to govern and have horrific judgement to have selected this man as a VP candidate?

Sure, you can make the argument that Cheney WAS VP, and Edwards merely the candidate the Democratic party offered, but that still points to the collective judgement of the Democrat brain-trust. Such as it may be.

Slightly better Democratic necromantic voting in Ohio (a mere 60k or so votes changing) would likely have had John Edwards running for President in 2012 (after a Kerry win in '04 and who knows who winning in '08).

Thank goodness for the National Enquirer. Whatever the Enquirer's defects, it's at least a considerably more honest paper than the New York Times.

Edwards is probably in a hurry to get this done so he can get a pardon before Obama leaves office. He just has to keep the trial low profile so as not to upset any voters.
