Doofus hipsters know no cronological boundaries...come to think of it, they don't know much of anything...

Bogus start date for Gen X - More like the early 70's.

You kids get off my lawn!

TC, a
Proud Boomer

I got to the age of 50 without realising I was a Gen X'er. It also means my wife is not just 2 years older than me, but a full generation older. Ha

Well if i have anything to say about it (born in 1978) we will be called the saved your old ass and bailed you out generation.

And as the old greedy go my daughter and other children i have will also be on the hook for the big spending cpp draining, defict paying off as well as all of the other thing's our parents and grand parents set up for themselves not giving a rat's ass about the children they brought into this world !!

I want to be clear many many many previous generations to mine are not this way at all and have worked hard to preserve themselves till they pass on and left a little something for there offspring witch is admirable and appreaciated. If you fall into this bracket please pay no attention to what i wrote above this paragraph.

These self-absorbed, feckless and shallow lemmings have no idea how conformist, gullible and conventionally banal they are. Produced from the same industrial press, their superficial and puerile education and comprehension serves only as a platform to openly demonstrate how caring and sensitive they are. Truly, the ickiest generation.

I belong to the blank generation.

Mr. X, if your off-base and insipid rant were true, guess what: You made us this way. Also, better start being nice, because us 30- and 40-somethings are just getting our hands on the levers of power.

It's over for the PCs now. The official Warnout Kantsellya kiss-of-death has been delivered.

My comment at the site:
My big brother stopped trying to scare me with stories of the Bogeyman when I was six because he realized I’d outgrown it. I guess the makers of this ad struggle to wrap their heads around the fact that voters are adults. Oh wait, they’re appealing to liberal/dippers. Okay, now I understand.

By the way, future generations will study the 2012 Alberta election campaigns for a perfect explanation of what not to do.

With the awful opposition from all parties, the fact that Wild Rose will not sweep the province shows how rough around the edges they are.

And a third comment:

I am still not sure if that's a serious ad, or perhaps the best, razor-sharp example of satire I have ever seen.

You can spend an amusing 30 minutes playing "count the hipster stereotypes" in this one! Perhaps the Boomer market researchers over-focus-grouped this one, just a bit?

Great fun. Thanks, Kate. I laughed a lot!

Kind of reminds me of the "Big Brad Wolf" ploy of the Sask NDP. Pathetic. Go Rose! Restore Alberta to its greatness.

Unfortunately every generation has members with this mentality. Think Warren Kinsella.

Gen X - as coined in Doug's book in 91 - refers to those born between 61 and 65 - the tail end of the baby boom.
-
those final 'boom' years were very high in birthrate numbers but followed by an immediate and dramatic crash in birth rates starting in 66 with the ubiquitousness of The Pill [followed by widespread abortion in the 70s and 80s and on].
-
being a Gen Xer, I was very aware of being late to the party in the 70s and 80s.
-
in the 70s it became apparent that all the music and groovie cultural changes came just before us and was experienced by older siblings and cousins, etc.
-
The response was embracing punk and new wave.
-
in the early 80s after high school, it became apparent that you were late to the employment and housing party.
21% interest, skyrocketing housing prices, no jobs, expensive schooling, etc.
-
much like being stragglers in a swarm of locust - arriving late to pick through the decimated crops after the 'me' generation had moved on.
-
but this is not a complaint. I realized early that other avenues were open to me. I embraced travel and working around the world. by the time i got serious in the 90s, the digital revolution was in full swing and Gen Xers like me took to it like ducks to water.
-
in life, i guess, timing is everything. make the best of what avails itself and don't whine. because [to paraphrase Hemmingway] if you tell a story long enough, they all end the same way...

Yukon Gold:

Be nice, or WHAT? Is that how you perceive the future state of our democracy once your collective statistical column gets its hands on the "levers of power"? Shall I expect retribution for not being nice, and if so, in what form?

As for your dreary old prosaic bromide about "me" (and I assume you are referring to my generation) making you what you are today, it's idiotic. I'm a generation X'er too - so I doubt that I hold any responsibility in making you what you are today. However, the assertion does attest to my comments about the superficial and puerile nature of comprehension amongst a certain sub-set of my peers.

What? Did you think you'd never get old? Generation gaps are actually intelligence gaps. They're the result of dumb-asses thinking they deserve respect, when they get older. I was able to recognize this as a young person, and now that I'm older, I treat young people with respect(if they deserve it, that is). Of course, some people as just morons, at any age, right Paul?

as for the video: what a bunch of hooey.
it'd be funny if it weren't so pathetic.
as usual, WK gets it wrong.
the 'i'd never thunk-heads' in the video are NOT Gen Xers.
they are 'millenials' or something like that.
they came of age in the late 90s and early Oughts.
sadly, they were poisoned early by our decrepit education system and entitlement culture.
they are the children of the 'Me' generation boomers [born 46-60].
every civilization that achieves peace and prosperity is doomed to breed them if they are not vigilant.
cultures rot from within.
and so it goes...

Gen X artists are dfinately in the senior league -

Billy Idol, leader of GenX is 56
Joe Strummer of the Clash is on a sod nap
Kirt Cobain ditto on the dirt nap
Elvis Costello is 57
Douglas Coupland 50

Gen X - disbanded
Beat Farmers - disbanded
Nirvana - disbanded
Butthole Surfers - disbanded
Dead Kennedys - disbanded
Dinosaur Jr. - disbanded
Mojo Nixon - institutionalized
Meat Puppets - disbanded

Not a lot of staying power in Gen X rock

Of course the video generation is wholly lost to the world.

They are spouting something, somebody, somewhere told them to say. They were also told to be 'hip about it, be cool about it, that they have no clue how the world runs is no problem.

These characters are probably going to be burden to their generation, since they think somebody owes them a living.
Perhaps they will end up at a homeless shelter one day, since their total knowledge of economic basics is something approaching 0 from a minus position.

Baby Boom ended 1964. Gen X started 1965. As a GenXer, I'd like to thank you navel-gazing Boomers for giving us the Community Organizer. Not.

What am I missing? Everyone in that video is too young to be GenXers. Is this Kate being snarky again wishing us GenXers good luck with the GenY losers?

That "Gen X" book came out in this midst of a fairly crappy recession similar to the one now. Youth unemployment was really high in BC where Copeland is from. Everyone I grew up with and went to high school with had plans to leave BC once they graduated and most did. The NDP was running the show.

This is your chance Alberta do not blow it.

Yes, we know. All other generations except yours sucked.

The point is that Warren K is so out of touch that he had no clue that the hipsters weren't part of Gen-X.

@ coach

Ha, sorry coach i do not know your age , if you read both of my previous post's on this page plus the appology i gave in the other thread you will see that as a young guy i do respect those who deserve it , just like war vet's if you think casue your a war vet you get to shit on me think again, i genrally respect the elder as a rule of thumb . and i am not a moron , and i did not lable you as one ever i mistook your identity for someone elses . for that i appologize.

All i am saying is the elder in this country who think only of themselves are the ones i am pissed at not the ones who work hard or worked hard for what they have to take care of themselves. i respect those people!1

the only leader to be afraid of in this country is Thomas Mulcair. Guy gives me nightmares. It's the evil eyes...

Forget hipster or millennial, how about the spell-check generation?

"Holy sh!t!! Excellent video."

Very first comment at Kinsella's, a severe departure from the opinion here at SDA.

Agree wholeheartedly,soccermom.

When was the last time Ol Worn-out endorsed a winner again?

The guy has a serious inverse Midas touch.

paul; You may not be a moron but try to prove it by learning to spell, its a step on the proof.

Hey!! The boomers go to at least '64!

the world of Gen X according to Doug consists of the tail end of the baby boom - 61-64/65.
it is arguable the those born between the end of the baby boom and the beginning of the echo fit into the Gen X mold. but really, boomers kids started showing up by '66.
I was born in 64 to depression era parents.

tHanx spyke won!

I think "F&^% It, I'm Voting PC" should be the official Tory slogan.

Poor Warren, eh? Sroll down just a little. Left-hand side. Doesn't the new "Sh*t from Hell" LP cover look like - a tooth? I know it's supposed to be boobs but it looks like a tooth.

It's okay, Warren, you're cool. Like Machiavelli with a punk band. Machiavelli would totally have had a punk band.

the gen X are starting to look ambitious compared to the 30ish types still riding around on skateboards. and some at that age think we want to see underwear

As Dennis Prager likes to say, the Baby Boomers ushered in the Age of Stupidity. THANKS GUYS.
