“Lawmakers in the nation’s capital have floated a plant to require high school students to apply to college or trade school — even if the students have no interest in attending. The proposal is a bid to ensure students in the troubled Washington, D.C. school system at least have the know-how to navigate the the admissions process.

Brett Stevens of Amerika.org argues that use of the term “leftist” is entirely legitimate, that it refers to something concrete (even as some cavil that the term is an inadequate, inaccurate, and made-up label) and that there are very real and critical differences between the left and the right.
At one point he refers to a study which found that adolescents with a specific variant of a particular gene were more likely to become liberals as adults:
Stevens:
“Novelty-seeking requires that you put aside the results of your actions and instead focus on how they make you feel. You might need to do something to achieve a result, but that’s boring, so focus on sensations instead and do something new or otherwise stimulating.
“Conservatives, on the other hand, are stimulated by results and not the process used to reach it. For conservatives, reality and natural law comes before human feelings, desires and judgments. The world is bigger than us, and results matter more than sensations.
“These differing viewpoints manifest themselves in different goals that each group seeks. As you can see, these two goal-sets are incompatible, and the only reason American politics ‘works’ is that we pretend two groups with radically different needs can occupy the same country.”
Verily.
The whole thing here. Highly recommended.

Re: Casablanca`
Without a doubt one of the best movies ever to hit the silver screen. The “Marseillaise” scene is well remembered. Rick`s Café Américain is embedded in the hearts of those, like myself, who stayed up and watched late movies when we should have been studying for the Algebra and Physics test the next morning.
I was born in 1949, when I got old enough to go to the movies, the black and whites had all but disappeared, Cinemascope and Hi-Fidelity sound had replaced them. If I have anything to be thankful to the Yanks for, it`s the great productions that came out of Hollywood, and the fun times we had at the movie theatres. Thanks EBD–Thanks Uncle Sam.

“Wind power ‘does not give value for money’ as it is unreliable and requires back-up gas stations”
“Europe’s focus on wind power is crippling British energy users with additional costs as it is not a cost-effective way to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, a report has found.
The EU has directed governments to generate 15 per cent of energy from renewable sources by 2020, leading many to focus on wind.
But wind power is unreliable and requires back-up gas power stations to maintain a consistent electricity supply, the Civitas think-tank study found.
It means energy users pay twice – once for the ‘window-dressing’ of renewables and again for fossil fuels the energy sector continues to rely on.
The study, written by economist Ruth Lea, uses Government-commissioned estimates of the cost of electricity generation to calculate the most cost-effective technologies.”

“Angela Merkel has the whip hand in an orgy of austerity”
“The notion that economic pain is the only route to pleasure was once the preserve of the British public school-educated elite, now it’s European economic policy”
“The novelist and polymath Anthony Burgess published a selection of book reviews and essays in the 1980s called Homage to QWERT YUIOP. One of the pieces was called The Whip and in it Burgess discussed le vice Anglais, the derisory term given by the French to the masochistic sexual preferences of upper-class Brits.
Burgess was in no doubt that the taste for the whip had affected the way Britain had been run, and he was probably right about that. In the 1970s, the Bank of England had an instrument for controlling the amount of credit in the economy, which its practitioners lovingly called the corset. Enough said. When Denis Healey accused the Thatcher administration of sado-monetarism everybody got the reference. With its references to fiscal restraint and the tightness of monetary policy, economic management at the time was coloured by the language of the dominatrix – and still is, of course.
Why was this?”

“*Conrad Black: an Iron Lady’s vindication”
“Margaret Thatcher stood against terrorism, a federal Europe, and union strangulation of her nation’s economy. On all fronts, history has proved her correct.
Though it is probably happening too late to be overly gratifying to her, events are piling on to vindicate Margaret Thatcher completely in her reservations about British integration in Europe. Her response to the proposal to reduce Britain to a local government in a federal Europe was, memorably: “No, no, no, and never.” And her reward for her refusal to get on board what was then the thundering bandwagon of Eurofederalism, was to be sent packing by her own ungrateful party, though she was the only British political leader who had won three consecutive, full-term election majorities since before the First Reform Act expanded the electorate in 1832.”

Thank God.
The sad thing about the liberation of Paris is the French have diminished their country through mass immigration and socialism to the point of instability. It’s one thing to be violently invaded by a foreign country. It’s quite another to swing wide the gates and allow non-violent soft invasion. Nobody is going to storm Normandy this time.

This 20-year-old is Steve Paikin’s son, for crying out loud. Try as he might, Mr. Paikin, anchor and senior editor of The Agenda, can’t cover up his l/Liberal bias. I long ago stopped watching The Agenda because Mr. Paikin’s and TV Ontario’s obvious l/Liberal bias became so irritating.
Actually, I saw that article, Bemused, and I have to wonder what your point might be. I’m afraid Checkstops are impossible things to conduct in secret. By their nature they have to be out in open, and that means whoever sees one is in a position to tell all about them to anyone he cares to. There’s nothing you can do about that, short of shooting all the witnesses.
You seem offended by the idea of “rights”. I take it you don’t think you should have any rights, and I’d be more than happy to take you on as a slave so as to oblige you. But you speak only for yourself.
I noticed that this particular crash was not confirmed as resulting from impairment, still less as involving any driver who might conceivably have been caught by a checkstop, still less as involving anyone who might have attempted to look for warnings of Checkstops. The Sun just decided to blame it on somebody who clearly had nothing to do with it, and you thought it clever to jump right in. Well, it wasn’t.

“Monterey Biologist Accused of Feeding Whale (Faces 20 Years in Federal Prison, Large Fines)”
“SAN FRANCISCO —- A marine biologist who runs popular whale-watching tours on California’s Monterey Bay has been indicted for violating federal laws that protect marine mammals.
Nancy Black, a marine scientist whose work has been featured on PBS, National Geographic and Animal Planet, was charged Wednesday with four violations of the Marine Mammal Protection Act. Her attorneys countered the charges by arguing that her interactions with the creatures were legal scientific research.
She was accused of feeding killer whales in 2005 during a research trip, and misleading investigators by editing video footage of her encounters with other whales during a whale-watching trip, and then lying about it. All of the alleged incidents occurred within the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, one of 13 ocean sanctuaries established in 1992.
Prosecutors say the charges were filed after an investigation by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and U.S. Department of Justice. Wyn Hornbuckle, a spokesman for the DOJ, declined to comment, as did a spokesman for NOAA.”
