Brett Stevens of Amerika.org argues that use of the term “leftist” is entirely legitimate, that it refers to something concrete (even as some cavil that the term is an inadequate, inaccurate, and made-up label) and that there are very real and critical differences between the left and the right.
    At one point he refers to a study which found that adolescents with a specific variant of a particular gene were more likely to become liberals as adults:

    Previous research has identified a connection between a variant of this gene and novelty-seeking behavior, and this behavior has previously been associated with personality traits related to political liberalism.

    Stevens:
    “Novelty-seeking requires that you put aside the results of your actions and instead focus on how they make you feel. You might need to do something to achieve a result, but that’s boring, so focus on sensations instead and do something new or otherwise stimulating.

    Without a doubt one of the best movies ever to hit the silver screen. The “Marseillaise” scene is well remembered. Rick`s Café Américain is embedded in the hearts of those, like myself, who stayed up and watched late movies when we should have been studying for the Algebra and Physics test the next morning.
    I was born in 1949, when I got old enough to go to the movies, the black and whites had all but disappeared, Cinemascope and Hi-Fidelity sound had replaced them. If I have anything to be thankful to the Yanks for, it`s the great productions that came out of Hollywood, and the fun times we had at the movie theatres. Thanks EBD–Thanks Uncle Sam.

  34. Actually, I saw that article, Bemused, and I have to wonder what your point might be. I’m afraid Checkstops are impossible things to conduct in secret. By their nature they have to be out in open, and that means whoever sees one is in a position to tell all about them to anyone he cares to. There’s nothing you can do about that, short of shooting all the witnesses.
    You seem offended by the idea of “rights”. I take it you don’t think you should have any rights, and I’d be more than happy to take you on as a slave so as to oblige you. But you speak only for yourself.
    I noticed that this particular crash was not confirmed as resulting from impairment, still less as involving any driver who might conceivably have been caught by a checkstop, still less as involving anyone who might have attempted to look for warnings of Checkstops. The Sun just decided to blame it on somebody who clearly had nothing to do with it, and you thought it clever to jump right in. Well, it wasn’t.
