24 Replies to “What Would We Do Without Headline Writers?”

  1. My all-time favourite headline came from my own hometown paper, the Brandon Sun, sometime in the winter of 1984-85:
“Sonic Booms Ruled Out In 163 Goose Deaths”

  2. The National Post is my paper. However, I have been noticing some strange grammatical and spelling anomolies lately. Also, as a totally off-topic comment: I am sort of tired of all the less than interesting or at least gratuitous and lengthy Israel-centric articles. It does become tiresome and not particularily interesting to me. I have come to refer to my paper as the Canadian-Israeli Times to my friends. They find it amusing. I support Israel, but too much is too much.

  3. Editors make some real boners, but on occasion show some imagination.
For you OFs. Way back in the late 60s, Edgar Benson was Minister of National Revenue and also President of the Treasury Board. At that time (as always), there was a discussion on tobacco taxes. One headline read
Beson Hedges on cigarette tax ☺☺
    Clive

  4. Fearless Leader “Italy fighting another war?”
The big question is – have they changed sides yet?

  5. “…children under the age of 12” seems like such an arbitrary number. Is there any significance in Italy, what is the age of consent to an Italian anyway?

  6. Hey, drama sells, and to all the drama, um, people who buy that stuff, “YOU SUCK!”

  7. “”The big question is – have they changed sides yet?””
    surrender is a “side”?????

  8. Did the journalist’s mother have any children that lived?
Fearless Leader “Italy fighting another war?”
Scar asks “The big question is – have they changed sides yet?”
Not sure, but New Years was celebrated on time.

  9. I’ve mentioned it before, but my all-time favorite news idiocy has to be the feed running at the bottom of the CNN screen when the Queen Mother passed on. The bulletin: “Queen Elizabeth I has died, aged…” kept scrolling past. It makes sense, doesn’t it? Her daughter was Queen Elizabeth II, so logically….

  10. Were they to hire literate city editors, that would do wonders for newspaper credibility.
It’s a long road back once that’s is damaged.

  11. Italy is not yet in a war.
The 561 dead, wounded, missing… were trampled by French leaving THEIR recent occupiers…. AGAIN!

  12. What’s the big deal, so the headline read 561 dead and what they really meant was 2 dead and 561 wounded. Given time those 561 will all die one day so it is not really wrong, just ask Al Gore.

  13. This would never happen under shar’is law…
notice how the article doesn’t mention throwing bombs into churches though….that’s acceptable islamic behaviour.

India: Top Islamic Seminary Issues Fatwa Declaring Firecrackers Against Sharia, Men Who Use Them Are “Brothers Of The Devil”…
(PTI) — Leading Islamic seminary Darul Uloom Deoband has issued a fatwa against manufacturing and selling of firecrackers, saying it was against Sharia law.
Manufacturing and selling of firecrackers is against Sharia law, and bursting of crackers is misuse of money, the fatwa said, adding that men who misuse money are the “brothers of devil.”
The fatwa was issued on a query from a man involved in the business of manufacturing firecrackers.

  14. Their headline writers must be understudies of the CBC. Some of the headlines coming out of that sewer are so bizarre one wonders what kind of drug policies they have in that tax absorbing institution.

  15. Wow! We need to reblog this everywhere so that we can expose the “lamestream” media for what it really is. This is the holy grail of evidence, not just some random typo. It illustrates collusion to deceive and is just what we’ve all been looking for. Spread this like wildfire!
