Oh, Frack!

“… please feel free to add your own comments.”
A Council Of Canadians Petition is about to go horribly wrong….
UPDATE: What have they to fear but SDA itself? The page can no longer be edited! Here’s where you can ask Maude Barlow why she’s afraid to forward the opinions of real Canadians.

  1. I wonder if the environment minister will wonder once he gets my email from this watermelon group praising him from withdrawing from the Kyoto scam and to frack away and drill baby drill.

  2. You mean we can re-write it and send something like this?:
    Don’t frack with our economy!
To the Hon. Peter Kent, Minister of the Environment,
Serious concerns are being raised about the effects of hydraulic fracturing — more commonly known as “fracking” — on water, the climate, wildlife and people’s health. Most of the opposition comes from people who know nothing about it but they just reflexively want to stop pretty much any business or industry that is growing.
You have the power to stop fracking. Which is great because I think you showed us recently in S.Africa you have a good grasp of the reality of the situation and the nuts to do the right thing even though the usuasl ninnies are going to cry and stomp their feet and continuing talking a lot of nonsense.
I don’t join with the self-appointed Council of Canadians who don’t represent most Canadians on fracking. I urge you to make the responsible choice and tell them to frack off.
    Sincerely,

  3. To the Hon. Peter Kent, Minister of the Environment,
Serious concerns are being raised about the effects of hydraulic fracturing by people who don’t know what they’re talking about and are just repeating a few slogans that the greenies supply them with. Much of the ‘knowledge’ of those who oppose fracking is based on ‘Gaslands’ a supposed documentary that falsely states that ground water contamination occurred after fracking. The truth is that the area in question always has had methane in the groundwater since the first water wells were drilled.
I also notice that many of the environmentalists groups who oppose fracking also oppose the Xcel Keystone and Northern Gateway pipelines and are funded by international environmental groups. Why are we allowing foreign special interest groups to interfere in our internal affairs?
Fracking creates jobs and reduces costs for home heating, transportation and electricity generation. In eastern Canada we import oil and natural gas from overseas so any fossil fuel we gain access to by fracking will cushion the shock should there be a disruption in the international oil supply, such as Iran blocking the Gulf of Hormuz.
I oppose the Council of Canadians and their irresponsible notion of a ban on fracking. I urge you to make the responsible choice and allow the decades old practice of fracking to continue with government scrutiny to ensure that industry standards are met.

  4. I sent this…
To the Hon. Peter Kent, Minister of the Environment,
Serious concerns are being raised about the effects of hydraulic fracturing — more commonly known as “fracking”. These concerns are unfounded and should be ignored. We are blessed with a country that is covered in snow every year and as often, thaws to provide us with an abundance of fresh running water that mainly is wasted the moment it touches any of the three oceans bounding us.
I also enjoy staying warm in winter, cool in summer, and creating a massive wake behind my ski boat so the kids and I can surf on the prairies.
With thanks to new technologies such as fracking, we are able to create employment, export stability and enjoy freedom which is the envy of the world.  Please do not give audience to those of us who twist the facts and try to raise themselves up by bringing those prosperous among us down.
    Thank you in advance.
    Sincerely,

  5. That was fun. If enough people change the message it could certainly throw a little wrench into their plans.

  6. Oh……here’s the one I sent
To the Hon. Peter Kent, Minister of the Environment, Don’t join with the Council of Canadians ,and support fracking. These wingnuts would protest blankets for the homeless. While you’re at it pleases cut all funding for the CBC and tell Suzuki to get a job. Sincerely (my name)

  7. My effort:
To the Hon. Peter Kent, Minister of the Environment,
    Hi Peter,
Thanks very much for getting us out of Kyoto. A terrible waste of money and resources.
There is much ado about nothing in the world of fracking. Please ignore those that seek to impose their idiotic plans on Canada.
It has come to my attention that there is a great deal of foreign money coming into the hands of Anti-Canada activists. Please look into this to see what can be done about this “invasion”.
    Sincerely,
    Pat Patrick

To the Hon. Peter Kent, Minister of the Environment,
Some folks have serious concerns about the effects of hydraulic fracturing — more commonly known as “fracking” — on water, the climate, wildlife and people’s health. That is because they do not understand that fracking has been done for the past 60 years without incident. Some people also believe that fracking projects commonly use millions of litres of water and tens of thousands of litres of unidentified chemicals that are injected into the ground at high pressure to extract natural gas from shale rock formations. That is also totally untrue.
Widespread opposition, evidence of water contamination, and the need to more fully understand the serious consequences of fracking, has already led to a number of places such as Quebec and France instituting a moratorium and banning the practice, respectively. It is caused by misinformation from websites and groups like the “Council of Canadians”.
There are clear federal government responsibilities associated with fracking concerning the regulation of air emissions, the Canada Water Act, the Species at Risk Act, and the Fisheries Act. The current regulations as they are are more than adequate.
You have the power to stop fracking but shouldn’t.
I do not support a ban on fracking. I urge you to make the responsible choice and help the folks who are organizing the misinformed by helping them access good information to counter the misinformation about fracking.
All of the problems highlighted in the media to date have nothing to do with fracking. Where leaks have been reported, it can be traced TO problems in cementing the multiple layers of surface, intermediate and production steel casing not fracking.
    Sincerely,

  9. To the Hon. Peter Kent, Minister of the Environment,
Serious concerns are being raised about the effects of hydraulic fracturing — more commonly known as “fracking”. Fracking and related technologies DO really work and this is why the communists and their bedfellows don’t like them a bit. Just imagine if we have access to cheap and plentiful energy and lots of jobs! That will spell disaster for the redistributive racket that the left Liberals, the NDP and the Block Quebecoise (RIP) want to foist on Canadians as a replacement for a healthy free market based, capitalistic economy.
We Canadians gave a strong mandate to our government to implement a responsible economic policy and steer safe the ship these rough seas. I am glad to see that leveled heads are prevailing in Ottawa and that the country has been freed from the burden of the Kyoto protocol. Moreover, I am glad to hear the finance Minister publicly declaring that “Canada is Open for Business”. Banning or excessively regulating fracking will go against that and the will of the majority of Canadians.

  10. To the Hon. Peter Kent, Minister of the Environment,
Frivolous concerns are being raised about the effects of hydraulic fracturing — more commonly known as “fracking” — so I’d like to say “Frack On Dudes”.
Widespread support of fracking, will keep the economy chugging along respectably.
You admit you have the power to stop fracking. The well-being of people and the economy is in your hands. We would encourage the continued responsible use of fracking for resource extraction.
I wholly oppose the Council of Canadians and support the continued use of fracking. I urge you to make the responsible choice on fracking while your government conducts reviews on the hysterical unfounded spurious assertions and erroneous concerns of the Council of Canadians on fracking.
Further, thanks for dumping the Kyoto Protocol, as CO2 is not ‘gassing the planet’.
    Cheers

    Have a nice day…

  12. Yes, like Hans R. I also received a cc in my inbox. I remarked to Minister Kent that the Council of Canadians must be a rather sequestered group as fracking in Alberta and B.C. has been going on for quite some time. I also thanked him for his efforts getting us out of the Kyoto Accord.

  13. Organizations like the Council of Canadians aren’t really concerned about the environment, they’re only concerned about disrupting the productive capitalist economy in the hope that it can be replaced by a parasitic socialistic economy with themselves in some sort of position of influence.

  14. Couldn’t send my contribution. Whaaaa.
To the Hon. Peter Kent, Minister of the Environment,
Serious concerns are being raised about the effects of hydraulic fracturing — more commonly known as “fracking” — on water, the climate, wildlife and people’s health.
    Please DO NOT LISTEN.
Widespread opposition, from groups like the Council of Canadians is another exercise in hysterics by far-leftwingnuts replacing science and reason. They are representing no one’s interest but their own paranoid delusions.
You admit you have the power to stop fracking. DON’T!!!!
I DO NOT join with the Council of Canadians and support a ban on fracking. I urge you to make the responsible choice and never place a moratorium on fracking.
    Sincerely,

  15. To the Hon. Peter Kent, Minister of the Environment,
Thank you for refusing to give any concession the demands of those radical environmental nihilists who campaign to destroy the Canadian economy. Denying accreditation for the Durban Conference to MPs who travel abroad to campaign against Canada, and withdrawing from the Kyoto Accord are definitely steps in the right direction.
When I noticed this current campaign against the fracking process, it prompted me to write this letter of support.
Please continue with unwavering support for Canada’s energy industries, which are vital to the well being of all Canadians (including those who do not realize it).
    Sincerely,

  16. Come on Canadians, don’t let this lot muck up your record of good decisions.(No Kyoto)
Canada has the Gasfrac system, proven on over 1000 gas wells, that doesn’t involve “millions of litres of water, dangerous chemicals”.
They use liquid propane, that is gelled and pumped under extreme pressure to fracture the rock/shale, and the propane then is returned to the surface, mixed with the Nat gas. It is then separated and reused.
Our Australian government has not got the guts to opt out of Kyoto.
And our Greens are dominant in trying to kill the Natural gas industry.
Show us up again – please.

  17. To the Hon. Peter Kent, Minister of the Environment,
You are about to be deluged by an organized letter-writing campaign set up by the so-called “council of Canadians” to attempt to urge you and the government to restrict fracking of oil and gas-bearing shales and other mineral deposits.
This campaign is scientifically ill-informed. Fracking is a safe and proven technology, and is an important means of extracting otherwise impossible-to-reach fossil fuel reserves – the kind of reserves upon which Canada’s economy, and our ability to cope with a cooling climate, so heavily depends.
I implore you and the government to act in accordance with the best available science on this issue – as you did when you pulled Canada out of the defunct, dangerous, and scientifically nonsensical Kyoto Accord.
    Sincerely,
    DN

  18. Sent mine direct to to the Hon. Peter Kent, Minister of the Environment, at kentp@parl.gc.ca
The Council of Canadians opposes this hydraulic fracturing, on the usual specious grounds of consensus.
I support the extraction of natural gas from shale in Canada. I voted Conservative last election, if fracking is banned I won’t next election.

  19. ‘There are tens of thousands of liters of toxic chemicals in the fracking water.’
I know this has to be true,
    because I am a carpenter..

  20. This is what I sent:
I seriously doubt the validity of many of the “charges” contained within the original copy of the template letter supplied by the Council of Canadians for the purpose of destroying the fracking industry. They must really think fracking to be a wild, uncontrolled industry if it were truly allowed to use 1000’s of “unnamed” chemicals in the process!
The Council of Canadians claim to be acting for social justice, however, think of the many jobs an ill-conceived ban on this industry would destroy and the injustice that would create.
I DO NOT join with the Council of Canadians and DO NOT support a ban on fracking. I urge you to make the wise, informed choice on this issue.
    Oh yes…..great job at Durban!

  21. What I sent.
Thank you for putting an end to the kyoto scam.
Maude Barlow does not speak for me.

  22. What I sent.
Thank you for putting an end to the kyoto scam.
Maude Barlow does not speak for me.

  23. Hon. Peter Kent, Minister of the Environment,
Ridiculous concerns are being raised about the effects of hydraulic fracturing by the ill-informed group known as Council of Canadians.
Quebec and France have placed moratoria on the practice, but that is their problem. Unfortunately, Quebec will want more transfer payments from wise jurisdictions that allow this and other responsible practices that mine resources for all Canadians to enjoy.
I urge you to support responsible fracking and resource development in Canada.
    Sincerely,

  24. My humble submission;
Man, the council of concerned communists is gonna be pissed tomorrow…
“To the Hon. Peter Kent, Minister of the Environment,
There is a great deal of brewing controversy over the process known as Hyralic Fracturing, or “Fracking.” This controversy is largely motivated not by the process itself but by a few cases of ground water contamination due to poor well casing jobs on a handful of sites by one drilling company in the United States and is no way indicative of both industry and environomental practises of the literally hundrteds of thousands of wells that have been “fracked” since the process was invented and used widley more than 50 years ago. It has been estimated that 1,000,000 wells have been fracked in North America, the lions share of those coming in the last 20 years when this supposedly offensive practise has been a target in the crosshairs of the extreme environmentalists.
“Contamination” proponents are mis-understanding the role of cause and effect including ground water contamination which occurs naturally in these gas fields, inclduing natural gas in the water table, that is the very reason that gas wells are drilled there in the first place. Groups like the site where I am forwarding this from (“The Council Of Concerned Canadians” as it were) use the ignorance of landowners and citizens not to argue on behalf of cleaner more environmetaly sound drilling practises, but to shut them down completly in a scorched earth policy aimed at destroying/blockading any industry that doesn’t fall under their supposedly “sustainable” umbrella. The depths of fracking, (several thousand feet in depth) and the 50-500 feet of most water wells simply do not bear out any rational relationship in terms of contamination.
The Fracking process only frees up the natural gas in a limited area by increasing the porosity of the formation, the fluids themselves do not have the ability to do this several thousand feet above, at the level of ground water tables for wells and such. At that distance the effects would be so diluted as to be meaningless. And any actual contamination due to these effects would a result of folling improper environmental procedures/laws when drilling. Which would then be litigated and the company rightly made to clean up the site(s) and pay damages to affected citizens.
The controversy is another environmental red herring being thrown by anti-business environmental groups whose concerns are spurious and whose motives are not to address actual concerns of legitimate citizens and stakeholders but to spread fear and table false accusations against an industry that produces hundreds of thousands of jobs nationwide and is a boon to every corner of confederation. Particularly those provices worst hit in the economic downturn.
Thank you for your time and consideration Mr. Kent, and I hope that in the new year, you and your office will take my, and other letters of genuinely concerned Canadians to heart, those more conerned with good high paying jobs and an industry that requires so subsidies to be sustainable in a poor economy.
Those aims and a clean environment, unlike the protests of the detractors may claim, are not mutually exclusive.”
    -Mark

  25. I’ll bet they censor and/or re-write all of our messages to again fit with their agenda. I changed several words much as others did. I suggested they detain all opponents of fracking while a review is done on the science of climate change.
    Nice one!

  26. My contribution………………..
Where Do These Watermelons Get Funding
To the Hon. Peter Kent, Minister of the Environment,
Serious concerns are being raised about the loyalty of this Communist based group to the interests of Canada. An investigation should take place to determine their source of funding and if from a foreign source this group should at least be brought before a Committee to explain what they are doing and for who.
    Sincerely,

  27. “Like the messages aren’t vetted before they’re sent on. Haha.”
Isn’t it sad how people like lberia never quite grasp the connection between prosperity and their “progressive” programs? The government – any government – generally uses any alleged extra money to fund the programs the left wants.
These people are too dim to realize they need fracking more than conservatives do.

  28. Excellent responses from SDA readers! For the record, here’s what my email says:
There are legitimate concerns about the effects of hydraulic fracturing — more commonly known as “fracking.” I expect the Government of Canada to ensure that fracking is carried out with minimal risk to the environmenet.
I urge you to ignore left-wing crackpots in organizations such as the Council of Canadians who are petitioning you to put a moratorium on fracking in Canada. You may expect them to trundle out the same old list of distorted and exaggerated half-truths as they do when they try to stop everything else.

  29. I sent:
To the Hon. Peter Kent, Minister of the Environment,
It is likely, that in your current position, you have to deal with realms of petitions, activists, and soothsayers who all urge you to take their position – at all costs. Or rather, they urge you to follow their guidance, and to never consider costs imposed on non-activist Canadians.
Despite their repetitive banter, you had the cojones to dump the Kyoto protocol. I never did find the time to congratulate you on that fine act of leadership, in what amounted to a true “speak truth to power” moment. But thank you for that!
I would like to state that the group which calls itself “The Council of Canadians” does not speak for me. This Canadian and the “Council of Canadians” are alike in a single aspect : as of 1 year ago, I had never heard of the term “fracking”. Thus, I do not feel qualified to express any opinion whatsoever. I suspect that it is an advancement which allows for easier extraction of resources, and could be considered a great benefit to Canadian life, but I defer to people who actually work in the industry.
So please remember, I don’t represent the CoC, and the CoC does not represent me!

And I got an immediate CC in my inbox. I think that means Siberia is … completely wrong!

  30. The CoC website has a picture of a glass of water on fire. In fact, it is shooting flames upwards.
That alone is enough for a rational person to conclude that the Council of Canadians is misleading, and can only convince people like Siberia.

  31. To the Hon. Peter Kent, Minister of the Environment,
Spurious concerns are being raised about the effects of hydraulic fracturing — more commonly known as “fracking” — on water, the climate, wildlife and people’s health. Fracking projects commonly use millions of litres of water and tens of thousands of litres of unidentified chemicals that are injected into the ground at high pressure to extract natural gas from shale rock formations.
Widespread opposition despite a lack of evidence of water contamination, and the need for enviro-whackos ro fully understand the serious consequences of unemployment, has already led to a number of places such as Quebec and France instituting a moratorium and banning the practice, respectively.
There are clear federal government responsibilities associated with fracking concerning the regulation of air emissions, the Canada Water Act, the Species at Risk Act, and the Fisheries Act.
You admit you have the power to stop fracking. The well-being of people and nature is in your hands.
I join with the average Canadians and support fracking. I urge you to make the responsible choice and at least place Maude Barlowe in jail until this issue is so far down the road she can only gnash her teeth in frustration.
    Sincerely,

  32. To the Hon. Peter Kent, Minister of the Environment,
Non-serious concerns are being raised about the effects of hydraulic fracturing — more commonly known as “fracking” — on water, the climate, wildlife and people’s health. Fracking has been taking place safely for over 50 years and even the head of the US EPA has had to admit that there was no evidence to date of negative environmental impact.
Astro-turfed opposition groups, supported by funding from outside Canada are attempting to influence what should be a Canadian decision.
There are clear federal government responsibilities associated with allowing outside groups to control the media narrative.
The prosperity and well-being of all Canadians is enhanced by utilizing safe and time tested techniques to develop our natural resources, Fracking has the potential to extend our prosperity beyond the next few generations, it holds the key to our future.
I refute the statements made by the Council of Canadians and do not support a ban on fracking. I urge you to make the responsible choice and ignore the astro-turf campaigns being initiated by this, and other groups.
    Sincerely,

  33. what a hoot. My version will not help these yoyo’s a bit. Time for the truth to come out.

  34. Eagle
“The CoC website has a picture of a glass of water on fire. In fact, it is shooting flames upwards.”
Water with gas in it? Welcome to Alberta. A common enough occurence in pre-fracking days. I even had one neighbor end up with a gas well instead of a water well.

  35. When it takes you to the donate page there is a place to let them know where you heard about them.

  36. This is fun:
“To the Hon. Peter Kent, Minister of the Environment,
“Please pay no heed to the considerably unserious comments being raised about the effects of hydraulic fracturing — more commonly known as “fracking” — on water, the climate, wildlife and people’s health. Fracking projects have safely occured for many decades in the petroleum industry to minimal or no environmental impact.
“Opposition to this practice is hardly widespread, particularly in regions where fracking creates jobs and other business opportunities. While work can and should always be done to better understand the potential impacts of fracking, backward-looking districts such as Quebec and France, which have instituted a moratorium and ban on the practice, respectively, are surely going to miss out on enjoying the overwhelming benefits of potential resource production.
“There are clear federal government responsibilities associated with fracking concerning the regulation of air emissions, the Canada Water Act, the Species at Risk Act, and the Fisheries Act. Thankfully, there has not been any evidence to date linking fracking to the contamination of the air, water or fish-bearing environments.
“You admit you have the power to stop fracking. The well-being of people and nature is in your hands. Please do not do anything rash to this practice without sufficient environmental or toxicological evidence.
“Finally, I urge you to set aside the ignorant bleatings of the likes of the Council of Canadians and, instead, support the continued practice of fracking. I urge you to make the responsible choice and at least place a moratorium on any potential ban of fracking while your government conducts reviews on the serious consequences of mitigating or ending safe, productive resource-extraction practices.
    “Sincerely,”
    etc.

  37. Good job everyone!
However, if you ever want to seriously voice concerns, send a paper letter.
This stuff just jams up an email account and some intern has to sift through it all.
    Still..nice hijack. Love it.

  38. I just sent a short version. Still kinda fun, though. Great way to start the year.

  39. I decided I have no interest in giving the Council of Canadians my IP address or any personal information, so I sent my own letter.
    Dear Minister,
It seems the Council on Canadians and many other foreign-funded left wing groups are running a propaganda campaign against natural gas fracking. A campaign funded in large part by American “charitable trusts” like Tides, the Hewlett Foundation and the Rockefeller Foundation.
I have voted for the Conservative Party of Canada since its inception solely because you and your colleagues were the people most likely to ignore the Council on Canadians and like-minded agitators. To date I am very pleased with your track record, particularly on withdrawing from Kyoto. That needed to be done.
    Faster, please.
    The Phantom”

  40. Iberia says “Like the messages aren’t vetted before they’re sent on. Haha.”
And as numerous posters have indicated, the messages are NOT vetted. But I can see why Iberia would think that…..because kicking dirt over opposing opinions and science is what the “Council of Bolshevik Canadians” and all other left wing envirofascist groups typically do.

  41. DONE!
To the Hon. Peter Kent, Minister of the Environment,
Please ignore the Council of Canadians. They are a misguided, technologically ignorant group who would like to condemn real Canadians to impoverishment whilst Chinese, Indians, Brazilans, Russians, etc. prosper.
Hydraulic fracturing (fracking) is safe and practical technology, provided appropriate oversight is exercised.
    Keep up the good work!

  42. Joey; Iberia’s comments and opinions are about as effective as a limp one at the Mustang Ranch. We have now finally gotten politicians to listen to reality, thank God for this govt. in these times. When, and only when, any dopey enviro-nutter can stand on a hill and stop the wind, will I believe ANYTHING that they spew. They are all PARASITES, they produce nothing but criticism, nice contribution to a productive society jackasses.
