rita @ 12:04- “Why not “Saskie” as in “Newfie”? We need to lose some syllables, not add a whole bunch“.
Lose some syllables?? Why, is two too many?
For the denizens: Skatch-wan. Of course outsiders will continue to mangle and mutilate our fair province’s appellation.
Compare to the verbose On-tar-i-o, or worse yet New-found-land-and-Lab-ra-dor, or Bri-tish- Col-um-bi-a!!
Just think of the inefficiency and wasted productivity occurring at the mere utterance of these places! The latter, however, may be mitigated by using the more thrifty B.C.!
“Saskie” is generally used to refer to a member of the Saskatchewan Party – as in “Link had his ass handed to him by the Saskies”.
And to think I voted for that do-nothing Dan D’Autremont instead.
I must say, snagglepuss, as a lifelong westerner who went to school in Saskatchewan, has been all over it and passes through regularly, with both parents from Saskatchewan and many friends there, I’ve never heard less than four syllables. And only outsiders pronounce the “wan” as “Juan”. It’s “Sis-KA-chi-win” whenever I hear it. Of course, I don’t hang with your crowd much; more’s the pity, I dare say.
