And with the notable exception of Canada, the UN is held in such unwarrented esteem that most member nations, which should know better, are loath to speak up...for fear of being labled fascist, racist, etc.

There are a lot of serious rumblings in the USA regarding defunding the UN and evicting the UN from US territory. The current administration seems bent on surrendering US soverenty to the UN.....lotta folks not happy.......

Certain fringe groups have long feared the UN but now this is now more mainstream...especially with the TEA Party.

Yesterday on John Gormley Live John was asking what people love about Canada. I called in and said our strong sense of right and wrong and that when the chips are down you can almost always count on Canadians -other than Taliban Jack - to do the right thing.

Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird said in a statement Thursday. "We call on North Korea to pass the chair on to a credible country that will advance the disarmament agenda within the UN.

Disarmament is stupid.
The best way to get that idea across is to have North Korea hold the chairmanship of the UN Conference on Disarmament in Geneva.

What with the UNs record for at least the last 2 decades I can not figure out why we are still a member. I would like to see Canada withdraw and just let those whack jobs carry on without us or our money.

Why, oh why, do Canada, the US, and every other "Western" country continue to fund this abortion of an "international institution"? We legitimize tyrants and dictators when free, open societies sit side-by-side with them and treat them as equals. Some may argue that we encourage them to behave differently by expecting better of them. I would argue that the opposite seems to be true - they are dragging us down to their level.

Thank God for Canada and for Prime Minister Harper's govenment. It's really quite a shame that you seem to be the only country left in the UN that hasn't completely lost its mind.

We are blessed with a magnificent Man as our Prime Minister; unfortunately, many Canadians are as far gone commi as your goof in the Whitehouse - some Canadian (using the term loosely) people like your President better than our Prime Minister! Canada is the default leader of the Free World right now because the citizens of the USA were faced with two loser potential Presidents to chose from in your last election; my heart hurts for you and your nation right now. The saving grace could have been Vice President Sarah Palin but the vicious msm chose to demonize her. Your country is blessed with many freedom loving patriots and I have faith that you will rid yourselves of the play tsar and his team of Bolshevik tsars II. III. .... We rid ourselves of the crooks in power by the skin of our teeth in the last election and there is a rabble in our silly service who are doing everything in their power to undermine our Prime Minister (our media with the exception of Sun Media is very anti PMSH). I suspect that those in Canada who prefer Obama to Harper only do so because they are don't suffer the consequences of living under his "rule."

The UN was built to support countries like China and Russia, both of whom still back North Korea.

While the appointment of North Korea is simply alphabetical, it serves not only to point out what a toothless organisation the UN is but to pad China and give the crippled North Korea some time by legitimising it. After all, a country like North Korea (backed by the "upstanding" China) may be poor and Stalinist but it is helming something important. Kim Jong-Eun, already disliked by many North Koreans, may be able to take the reins of the decrepit country once his porcine father kicks the bucket. If he can convince those who don't like him that China and the UN have afforded them time to build up their armaments, he might be able to hang on.

Just my random thoughts.

As an old UN hand, I had a ringside seat at the descent of the organization into a bureaucratic sinkhole of patronage, corruption and political intrigue. It is beyond redemption, and the western democracies demean themselves by continuing to support it.
