Back in 2002, Chretien had the RCMP arrest and jail Cameron Ward on rumor that he might throw a pie. No pie was ever found or thrown and Ward later recieved $10k in a lawsuit.

Of all the ways a person can be physically assaulted, the pie in the face is one of the lowest on the scale. If someone had attacked Murdoch with a gun, knife, or even a pointed stick, I'd be as angry as many of you seem to be. But a pie in the face isn't meant to injure; it's meant to insult. Surely Murdoch deserves that.

Now, some may argue that Murdoch didn't do the hacking, and neither did Rebekah Brooks. But the whole idea of a chain of command is the man on top takes responsibilities when his underlings screw up. We're all ready to jump on Bambam when his government subsidizes studies on gay penis size, a decision which I doubt ever passed his desk. A pie in the yap is exactly fitting for a man whose papers routinely smeared people on the basis of single unsubstantiated reports, broke up marriages with suggestive pictures even where no infidelity had occurred, and ruined careers on the basis of innuendo. He's getting a taste of his own medicine; if you can't take it, don't dish it out.

Remember, Rupert Murdoch despises both the trade union movement in Britain and the upper class control of the economy, business and government. That means he is hated by both the Left and the traditional, aristocratic Right. It is just as much an old boy's network now as it was a century ago. His tabloids have mercilessly dragged the lot of them through the mud for decades, exposing all the personal and public sins that the otherwise previously compliant British press would have ignored in former times.

Virtually singlehandedly, Murdoch revived a British press industry that was dying, in part by breaking the British press unions and in part by breaking British press traditions. His press was much more savage in its criticism and examinations of individuals, and they've hated him for it ever since.

KevinB, I don't give a rat's @$$ for the injured feelings of the British upper crust and their protected and privileged little world. Those who claim to be better than all the rest of us proles should always be under the gun for their public and personal behaviour. And for all your claims about innuendo and poorly substantiated reports, Britain owes Murdoch and his papers a great debt of gratitude for all of the truly vile behaviour uncovered about so many truly dismal Cabinet Ministers and the like with which Britain has been afflicted.

Given that the whistleblower who started this whole thing was found DEAD yesterday, and the Chief of Police's office was implicated and the chief resigned this week...

With due respect, you can't have been following this story at all closely.

Murdoch's crew were bribing police officers, a crime. They were getting unlisted cellphone numbers for people from the cops which they in turn listened in on, among a number of other services.

The lead investigator (Hayward) of Scotland Yard assigned to determine whether the initial discovered hacking was just a one off by a couple of guys, as the NotW maintained, or whether it ran deeper within the corporation, determined that there was nothing more to see ( which current events have clearly proven wrong)and then quit the Yard to go work for Murdoch's company.

The Yard hired on a NotW guy, (Wallis), and subsequently his daughter, as an advisor who now stands among those who have been charged with crimes.

The top guy at the Yard accepted a free five week stay at a posh resort courtesy of a man who turned out to be, wait for it, a good friend of Wallis.

They were hacking the phones of some Yard detectives. The possibility if not likelihood being in order to get something on the more honest cops who weren't playing ball.

Last but not least, the NotW had the police trace cell phones to their location.

Apparently, what was going on was quite a bit more than just guessing someone's voicemail password. By the by, two NotW guys went to jail in 2007 for doing precisely that. It was and is a crime that NotW committed 4000 times, that we know of. There is no downplaying that.

It's interesting so many of the radical leftists commenting here condone the assault on Rupert Murdoch. The word for that is vigilantism, and is strictly illegal. KevinB, just for the record, that hearing was designed to find who was culpable, and it is a measure of your contempt for the law that you will not let the law take its course and instead applaud vigilante " justice " in its place.

The episode is just another example, if one is needed, of the ease with which some liberal souls turn to violence to achieve their ends. And, KevinB, your comment encourages violence against your political enemies, by poo-pooing it's seriousness.

The left has been the source of the Reagan assasination attempt, the Pim Fortuyn assassination, and all too frequently finds nothing wrong at all with employing violence to achieve their ends. Che Guevara and Stalin aren't the only leftists who have found charm in the "song of the bullet".

small c: that's fine. I don't condone criminal behaviour any more than you or anyone else here. When the guilty party is identified, and it's been proved in court through due process of law. At the moment, all we have are largely unsubstantiated allegations.

The MSM of course is largely involved with throwing overboard presumption of innocence, etc. They're not interested in the lesser fry; they want Murdoch. The British uppercrust and the traditional media establishment hate Murdoch with a passion. And for every little toad with a grudge, this is the chance to stick the knife in.

The left wants to destroy Murdoch, because they want their media monopoly back. The Alinsky model is how they intend to do it.
