Not sure what Devenport is implying but I AM sure that if a comedian said on HBO that he wanted to tie Nancy Pelosi up and sodomize her it wouldn't really go over too well. Nor would it be excused as 'comedy'.

I'm kind of agreeing with Maron - with a twist of course (ie. like what Lisbeth Salander did to her guardian in The Girl With the Dragon Tatoo).

Every once in a while I think to myself what an 1857 feel my country has. Then I tell myself to calm down, it's only words, no reason to get stirred up until someone actually does something.

I mean, comedians not being delicate with matters of sexuality has a long history. Remember the like of Andrew Dice Clay?

What is being missed here is the prelude and context of that discussion: Marcus Bachmann's unmitigated rage, particularly towards homosexuality, his appalling use of so called "reparative" therapy, and his own possible closeted homosexuality.

If the subject of were about prominent progressives then the left would be yelling about misogyny, homophobia, long articles about the violent nature of the Tea Party/Republicans/conservative men, the need to regulate hateful speech on TV, demanding apologies and resignations, etc.

Well, I guess it's their choice to speak that way about another human being. This simmply reveals very clearly how depraved and morally bankrupt these pathetic people are. I actually feel sorry for them that thoughts like these go through their minds. I also think that even though this offends me and many others that they, unfortunately, have the right to say it. I hope this doesn't get them too much publicity because it will simply encourage more disrespect like this.

Looks like the only time a "comedian" will see any repurcussions from their crude jokes is if it's directed at homosexuals as Tracy Morgan can attest to. He recently has undergone "re-education" for an anti-gay rant he made at one of his shows a few weeks back.

Or how about that Canadian comedian who was marched in front of the HRC's and lost because he ridiculed a lesbian couple for disturbing his show.

This is "that" Dan Savage? It is hard to believe that anyone would give this sick bastard a minute of air time. But then, we are talking about Maher.

Today I tried to cancel my HBO subscription with Shaw - after e-mailing HBO of my intent to do so and telling them why.

However, Shaw 'packages' HBO along with a half dozen other channels, so the only way to cancel one is to cancel them all. My only option of course, is to not watch it. That's all well and good, but it really doesn't send a message to Maher nor to his corporate employer.

Any other suggestions?

Bill Maher has always come across to me as a very angry, hateful person. And conservatives get tagged with the hate label? Come on. I refuse to watch that excuse of a man, I don't listen to him and I change the channel every time his ugly mug shows up.

Minor correction: Dan Savage made that death wish on Jon Stewart's show, not on Real Time. Oddly, no one there, not Stewart, not the other two guests (one of whom works for Thomson Reuters). or the audience reacted to what he had said.

Savage has since apologized, though rather weakly, in my opinion. I made a casual search and couldn't find any apology from Stewart, who didn't react to the death wish.

(There's so much hate from the tolerant left, that it's hard to keep track of it all.)
