From the fringes of science, a claim from the Met Office (UK) that the big glowing ball in the sky may have some effect on climate;
“We now believe that [the solar cycle] accounts for 50 per cent of the variability from year to year,” says Scaife. With solar physicists predicting a long-term reduction in the intensity of the solar cycle – and possibly its complete disappearance for a few decades, as happened during the so-called Maunder Minimum from 1645 to 1715 – this could be an ominous signal for icy winters ahead...
Though not nearly as much as your incandescent bulbs.
...despite global warming.

You know,
and I know,
the sun has nothing to do with global warming!
Could someone send this to the Premier of British Columbia. Our gas just went up again with another increase in carbon tax!
So...is the science settled then?
Anybody who has attended engineering classes and had to do labs know what cook's law is, the fudging of results to fit a desired outcome. That is the law that seems to govern the global warming/change so called scientific experts like the people that prop up Al Gore's carbon scam ponzi scheme. Unfortunately governments like BC have bought into this bunk and their citizens are paying for it.
When was it I said the thermostat for the sun, was either in Balzac or Biggar, could be 02 03 can't remember, but I sure could use a little of that trillion dollars AlGore and Suzuker stole from the taxpayers via idiots like Rob Renner Lorne Culvert, "Jim Prentice", that little fairy of the environMENTALists you know. Stick a FORK in it losers, while wer'e at it stick a fork in our western economies. Class action Tony Merchant, if you ever needed a legitamit target to SUE.
But really, I have already sold my snowmobile suite...
Well I still have my Nomex coveralls just in case.
Well, that just covered the last of the bases -- global warming is now covered by global warming; global cooling is now covered by global warming, and, oops, (slight oversight) neither warming nor cooling is now covered by global warming.

Back to the rig then eh? It is warm near the flare stack afterall.
The other 50% is determined by gods will.
bartinsky
I'm guessing Tony will only gets involved in class action stuff where the class is the action...
Alex
Could you please note the gods involved and their corresponding influences?
Inquiring minds want to know.
Al Gore will lead a mission to the Sun and gain full control over it, no worries.
Where's Montgomery Burns when you need him?
Despite the facts the cult will never die!
Still in denial at SDAs that climate change and instability is REAL and is ever changing. Such fools, such poor poor fools. Pity the fools.

Yeah I guess so. We call it wheather.
Look it up.
The article is interesting [the linked-to FT, not WUWT]. The Financial Times is consistently good, the other extreme from the paper that died this mornimg, although I doubt that many of ITS "readers" will transfer.
It also refutes one or two previous WUWT outrages, but Watts doesn't consider that. [last week, wasn't it all down to Chinese coal?]
Anyway, the article is not about global warming, but weather & seasonal variablility. The most interesting paragraph is just a couple before the quoted one, in which they relate ENSO to the AO. [you'll have to read it]
They mention that their other focus [on climate change] has led to some abuse [heh] but that their trust level is 82%, which must be higher than any other institution in the present UK
Yes,"T", if you can't trust a guy like Al Gore, who can ya trust!
Re carbon tax - this made me laugh.

I searched the Internet and the Met Office website and found no record of an 82% trust score or public opinion poll. Where exactly does that number come from?
So says our binkered Leaders.

There’s a limit to the amount of damage I can do wasting my own money. There are no limits to the damage Chu & Co can do wasting my money. Maybe they should give up the car keys first.

cook's law is very close to Cole's Law
chopped cabbage.
I dunno, the idea that solar variations are responsible for climate is pretty radical ! :-) :-) :-)
It isn't their uncertainty which offends - it is more or less what I thought to be the case, from talks I have heard mainly on physical oceanography -
but rather their quite evil claims to know much more than they did.
Ignorance is not a sin but a misfortune, and it is the common misfortune of us all,
but for an important government office to claim certainty when it knows there is none is criminal.
And people have died, in early Winter 2009 and 2010, from the Met Office's criminal misinformation.

The FP article [which is worth reading] mentions that it is from their own "public trust" surveys.
You might put McIntyre & his FOI machine on the case. Or do it yourself -- this [PDF] should give enough procedural information [and it includes the "survey" information that you are likely to get in response.]
Here is a recent "barometer" ,[PDF] which details their efforts to survey the public, corporate customers & government & mentions the 82% "moderate to high trust in the Met Office" [They are clearly keeping an eye on which way the wind blows]
More corporate publications
Yes, I read the FT article and saw the number but having read a few too many annual reports it sounded like HR-speak*. Thanks for the link to the Barometer Report. Here is the relevant portion (p13-14):
"Short and sweet
Consisting of just three questions, it can be completed in just over 30 seconds. The first question asks customers to rate their satisfaction with the Met Office, from 1–5. The second question, known as the promoter question, asks how likely the customer is to recommend the organisation to a friend or colleague, on a scale from 1–10.
As Chris explains, “This question taps into the idea of word-of-mouth and whether people will talk positively or negatively about your product or service. It’s an indicator of loyalty — but it also gives us information about our detractors, the unhappy customers.”
The third question asks how the organisation can improve, with a text box for customers to make suggestions.
Yep, HR-speak. As is, this stat tells nothing about the customer's or public's trust in the Met Office's climate change competency. Now I understand why your response is so snarky.
*For instance, a HR specialist thought it was A-OK to report a 100% increase in women in a non-trad classification because the employment had increased from 1 woman to 2 women without noting the actual numbers - accurate but highly misleading.
That the "science" around global warming is given any credence at all can be entirely explained by the innumeracy of journalists.
So they now theorize that the sun has 50% contribution toglobal warming. Whats next? Naming this contribution a seasonal adjustment perhaps? Lets call the one 50% summer, and the other winter.
50% eh ???
Well they are half right.
Climate change/disruption proponents uses one of the oldest and most effective marketing strategies/techniques on the books. Invent a problem and then sell your solution. The greater the "invented" problem is perceived to be, the more you can charge for the fix - all the better if you can make people feel like saviors and do-gooders in the process. And of course, repetition, repetition, repetition of said invented problem gives the illusion of credence. If you can make your product trendy, all the more power to you.
Move along now, Its all Carbon, and nothing but carbon. Nothing here to see but Carbon and more Carbon. Move along.
yet the moonbats still squeak....
MISSOULA — The race director of a 100-mile ultra-marathon foot race through the Flathead National Forest has cancelled the event due to lingering snow on the route that he says would make the course too dangerous for runners and likely prevent anyone from finishing within the required 36-hour limit.
Brad Lamson said that portions of the course for the Swan Crest 100 have deep snow that is concealing signs that mark trail intersections.
He said he’s convinced the snow won’t melt in time for the event scheduled for July 29
postulate turning off the sun and you will find it is at least 99.99% of the cause and effect. the other .01 being leakage from the earth's mantle.
