I'd be interested in trying to find any racial group that wasn't racist. The most common thing I was called in school was "cumshewa" (come -SHE - wah). It was Gitksan for "bleached beech wood", and doubled as the name for pasty-faced white people. "Gai-Jin" also has a double meaning in Japanese, I've heard, "foreigner/outsider" and "barbarian".
I don't see how any culture can survive without knowledge that there are those outside the culture, and that those outside are different. It's not a long trip from "different" to "inferior", because all groups like to think that they are doing things "the right way", so therefore if someone is part of another group, they must do things the wrong way. There are only a couple of groups that I know of that actively went out to learn from others as a means of improving their culture's prospects for the long run (the Scottish and Japanese coming readily to mind).

I recall the time one brought home a definition of various government types. The one for communism went something like this:

Most the teachers themselves are not so bad - they tended to be good intentioned and reasonably representative of the full spectrum of political opinions with a bit of a tilt to the left. We've largely got ourselves into this mess by parents being inattentive concerning what their kids are being taught in our public schools for the past 20-30 years. With most households with two parents in the work force, I guess the thinking is, "who's got time to check out what Johnny/Janie's learning in school?"
My kids went through the public system, and as a Christian of British heritage, I realized early on that my kids were being told that their heritage and culture were bad and that all other heritages/cultures, especially the visible-minority kind, were good. You know? Happy-clappy, Kumbaya-approved while my family's culture was placed in the cultural heritage dungeon.
I spent a lot of time talking to my kids about the propaganda they were being fed -- and I also tried to address it at every turn with the teachers and the principal. You can imagine how popular I was! And I was pretty much alone. Very few other parents seemed either concerned or willing to tackle the garbage being "taught" -- because most of them had no idea and when told what was going on, tended to shrug their shoulders. A few thanked me for my activism but when invited to join in, demurred.
The public education system is a gulag: fall in line, as a teacher, as a parent, as a student, or else.
Canadians have been sleeping at the wheel while our country is rapidly being taken over by illiberal forces which are using our laws and "openness" and "tolerance" to force their values and lifetstyles on us. The unholy alliance of the Godless Left and the worship-our-God-or-else Islamists has created a perfect storm -- and the TDSB are their perfect dupes and useful idiots.

The focus on social justice (aka white people suck, we are killing Mother Earth, etc.) education at the expense of real education results in white people moving their kids out of the public system. Continued white flight to private schools and homeschooling will increase the push for school vouchers and school choice. After achieving that, all parents who are middle income and above will be able to afford to abandon the public system. As the funding dries up the public system will decay and atrophy into schools of last resort with the worst outcomes for the remaining students.
Progressives aren't very good at seeing the consequences of their actions, are they? If they were the geniuses they think they are they would continue to wait patiently until the kids hit university.

Before I hit the link, I assumed that this drivel was the product of a Junior High student - one unable to differentiate between "socio-speak" jargon and reality, and too eager to appear progressive, or to please a certain predictable audience. Then I hit the link and saw the source. That hurts! How can any adult spew this and not see the stupidity, the erroneous reasoning, the unfounded sweeping generalizations and accusations? When I consider how prudently I have tried to weigh my words to my students, the fact that those on the other side have no inclinations towards accountability in their proselytizing is simply maddening.
Kudos to Alain at 12:59. I really think that the sooner the public system is abandoned, the better. Frankly, public education has only been in wide use for a few hundred years, and the experiment has run its course. Many generations have been educated without the public system, and many students currently are well educated outside it. Parents, if you don't want to home school your own kids, band together and form home school units of a few to several families, where different parents can share the teaching (and other) duties depending upon expertise and inclination. These are your kids! And don't think that these pervasive messages and approaches to "reasoning" are not affecting your kids, simply because you are presenting the other side at home, church, or wherever. The sheer all-pervasive volume of the messages they receive, and the assumed authority behind them, can easily undermine or even trump the veracity of your messages.
LC Bennett, what I would look for instead is an effort by the Proglodytes to enlist the apparatus of the state in cracking down on private schooling (and certainly homeschooling). Even if a school voucher system becomes a reality, you can bet that it will come with many strings attached. That is one of the more insidious vectors of the creeping totalitarianism, the notion of "public-private partnership", with the government gaining authority over the internal policies of a private entity as the price for that entity accepting the King's schilling.
There's an effort underway in the USA to attack the so-called "for profit" educational institutions, proposing new laws that would require such institutions to guarantee a certain minimum job placement statistic for their graduates within a certain time frame, else they lose eligibility to participate in student loan programs (conveniently, the US government now has a monopoly on those, too). While they are, predictably, painting it as being for the protection of students, it's really just an effort to shore up the defenses of the public education monopoly. How many "real" universities could make such job placement guarantees themselves? Particularly for highly dubious areas of study such as "Gender Studies" and the like?
The educrats aren't going down without a fight, that's for sure.

I'll say yet again that what is necessary to turn this downward slide around is for individuals who are opposed to this garbage to start running for school board positions. It seems in civic elections that school board is one of the least glamorous of the posts people go after and this is probably how the statists have managed to infiltrate the system to this degree.
By having Libertarians on school boards, there would be a lot more publicity about the statist garbage that is on the curriculum. One way to get peoples attention is by pointing out the huge waste of property tax money that takes place in "education". Likely it would be far cheaper to decentralize education and have teachers serve more as advisers than teach formal classes. A lot of students are capable of learning on their own and I consider myself largely self-taught as I was able to read when I first started school so can't even credit the conventional education system with teaching me that. Many of the problems that occur in schools are as the result of putting a large number of kids together and schools serve more as daycare centers than places where people acquire knowledge. If working parents just need a place to warehouse their kids, then daycare workers are a lot cheaper to hire than teachers.
I can't see the outcome of this being any worse than what we're getting now.

True, MissAnthropy, the edu-crats will attempt to regulate out the competition. Personally, I think the both home-schoolers and "for profit" schools will successfully resist the teachers unions.
Almost every province has a home-school association that monitors the situation and helps parents who are being hassled by the authorities. For profit schools have the advantage of catering to VIP's that will never allow their children to be forced into the public system (teachers kids are often at these schools).
Right now it is a very simple process to start home-schooling your children in Saskatchewan. Basically, it is a letter and an education plan. I did the home-schooling thing at our previous location because the public school system was awful. The final straw was when the math program in the middle of grade two consisted of single digit addition and gluing popsicle sticks in the shape of numbers on craft paper. This town is better but I'll likely end up homeschooling one of my kids anyway since the traditional system is not meeting his needs.
