We should send Haiti more money. That's sure to solve the problem.

From the Haiti article:

but Jon Weigel from Partners in Health ... who followed the discussions, said the rejection [of cholera vaccines] was justified at the time by concerns over the social tensions that could be sparked by distributing limited quantities only to some Haitians

We'll never know what the numbers would have been, but whoever was making the decisions in Haiti probably considered the following:

* How many will die from cholera if the vaccines are rejected?

* How many will die from rioting if only a limited number of vaccines were distributed?

Hell of an equation.

Lickmuffin

"Hell of an equation."

Yeah I made the same conclusion.....no easy answer....both are potential threats...impossible to quantify......but decision based on a subjective guess was necessary.....hindsight is 20/20.

C'est la vie!

Just to play devil's advocate, McGuinty and others faced the same sort of question at Caledonia:

* What's the cost of letting militants run rampant for a few weeks?

* What's the cost of armed conflicts at multiple reserves across the province (if not the nation) if the OPP try to enforce the law?

The cost of the former is $20 million in settlements, plus the cost of property damage, lost productivity, and so on.

The cost of the latter would have been measured in lives.

Yes, the "will they riot?" question always preys on the minds of Japanese authori.... oh wait!

Okay, Japanese have come up with a classy way of keeping Urine off the streets an out of the water supply, but Haiti didn't have a nuclear plant meltdown during their earthquake, so ... whose more advanced?

And lets be fair, we don't know how many hundreds of thousands of Japanese have gotten ill from cholera in the aftermath of their earthquake. Right?

At the time of the Haitian earthquake I thought it merciful that it wasn't the rainy season for disease reasons. Flubbed that.

Well, for one thing, Japanese didn't need high school students to fly over from Canada to teach them how to dig latrines.

The Haitians aren't worth saving. But some Japanese dude should get the Nobel Pi$$ prize for that toilet!

I thought most folks were born with the innate ability to dig themselves in deeper when faced with a MORE complex solution than the 'easy' way out!

FTA: "but Jon Weigel from Partners in Health ... who followed the discussions, said the rejection [of cholera vaccines] was justified at the time by concerns over the social tensions that could be sparked by distributing limited quantities only to some Haitians"

More than likely the tensions were coming from the fact the Hatians didn't trust the Dutch and probably thought the pills were birth control. You know the Hatians can't have that now, they need those million starving babies to get those million dollar aid packages.

On that portable japanese potty; I , I , I , really don't know what to say !
,

I find this whole post very racist. I don't care to explain why. RACISTS!!!!!

Well, for one thing, Japanese didn't need high school students to fly over from Canada to teach them how to dig latrines.

Or raise goats, which are ubiquitous in other 3rd world nations.

I remember an article a few months back about a Haitian teen being shot for looting.
Other Haitians were distraught about it, as most people would if a child perished that way, and it makes me wonder why when we issue vaccines and they first go to the most vulnerable in our society without riots breaking out that Haitians can't do the same if they really care?

In a disaster zone, rioters should be shot just the same as looters.

Abe, kindly tell us all just how many have been killed or injured by radiation exposure in Japan.

Uh...I think God already invented the portable toilet - the tree! (or for us guys it is formally known as "anywhere")

And Haiti already chopped all theirs down.

I can't imagine what the Japanese inventor was thinking, though. Hard to drop trou when encased in a garbage bag.

There is no way to keep this thread clean and that plastic bag toilet is why.

Abe, that was weak. Just weak. Yes, the Japanese had a meltdown, but that reactor means power. How many Haitians can work a reactor? How many Haitians know not to pee in the street?

At least the Japanese are giving it the old college try. Invention, necessity and such.

And no rioting.

abe, move to Haiti or Japan, pick one.

I am doubting very much of anything is getting invented in Haiti.

Haiti has only been independent for 207 years, of course they'll have a few post-colonial difficulties....

Just why the hell can't Haitians look after themselves?

Rhetorical......................

I'm with Black Mamba...Kate is racist!!!

"Enough is enough"...(Storming out of SDA).

Leave Haiti for Quebec to take care of...They understand each other.

I can't wait until the portable toilets hit Canadian malls and free up the public bathrooms a little.

A little more cultural enrichment and we can have most of the fans sitting in garbage bag ponchos at hockey games, movie theatres and public transit from here on in.

Tip: Buy shares in Glad.

It sure does beat the current cultural enrichment of Hattie’s open toilet practices hands down to be sure.

And how many rock stars are big in Haiti, I'd like to know?
