I attended a Boy Scout World Jamboree at Niagara-on-the-Lake many moons ago. One of the first things that happened when we arrived at our campsite there was that our scout master took us all aside to explain to us what buggery was and what measures to take to avoid it. I doubt if they could get away with that these says. The usual suspects would be crying blue murder.

So the Chinese government killed Lai's brother, his accountant and 17 associates, but we have no reason to believe that they'll carry it out in Lai's case as well?

More from the Star: "At Thursday’s hearing, [Lai's lawyer David] Matas also brought up the Canadian and Chinese governments’ treatment of Tao Mi as a reason why Lai’s deportation should be reconsidered."

Canada's policy is not to deport persons facing execution or torture in other countries. It stems from a 2000 Supreme Court decision involving Sebastian Burns and Atif Rafay, who were eventually convicted of killing Rafay's family in Washington state. That crime occurred in a democratic country with a functioning rule of law.

On top of that, in a 2001 case called Cobb, the Supremes rejected extradition of a man facing charges in the United States because (a) the judge in the case, sentencing co-conspirators, commented that fugitives who did not cooperate would get the "absolute maximum jail sentence", and (b) the prosecuting attorney made a comment on television that the fugitive would be "the boyfriend of a very bad man" in jail once he were convicted. The latter remark was tasteless but merely flippant, and should have been dismissed by the Court out of hand. The former is a little more serious, but still not enough to prevent extradition to a nation with the rule of law.

Even more: When judge Morris Fish was appointed to the Supreme Court in 2002, I recall reading that he once refused to extradite someone because the sentence that person was facing at home was 20 years, whereas in Canada it was only 5 years (I don't have the details).

But now, despite all this, apparently Canada can deport a person merely facing tax or customs evasion, to a totalitarian dictatorship run by a gang of thugs, that clearly has no rule of law whatsoever.

How did this case not get appealed to the Supreme Court of Canada?

This is the second time this year that a situation like this has arisen.

Where are the usual "human rights" advocates? Their silence -- and hypocrisy -- is deafening.

I have a comment caught in the filter re Ezra Levant's video, which makes it very clear that ABB is not a Christian fundamentalist. Ezra spent the weekend reading the 770,000-word screed by Breivik and highlights quotes that make it definitive that ABB is, in no way, a Christian, let alone a fundamentalist Christian.

Breivik's lawyer says "he's probably insane". The lawyer is also a member of the Norwegian Labour Party,the people Breivik hates so much.

Maybe he's insane,but he's not stupid. If the lawyer doesn't get him exactly what he wants,Breivik can always claim he was not competently represented due to the Party affiliation of his defence lawyer,and cost the justice system plenty in appeals.

It's not his lawyer's call to announce that his client is "insane," particularly as that doesn't seem to be how is client is pleading. Do you think the lawyer wants out or is he just incompetent?

Laying the basis for an insanity defense in the face of his client's instructions. He's there to get the best possible outcome for his client, and not merely to do what the client tells him.

Of course we're not privy to what Breivik actually instructed him. He may be doing exactly what he was told. And of course, he could indeed be completely incompetent, but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. I always assume a strange lawyer to be competent and let him prove me wrong. And bless 'em, they mostly leap at the opportunity. But still.

A Navy spokesman cited "subsequently determined facts and evidence surrounding both the incident for which the award was made and the processing of the award itself." John Kerry has to be hoping this doesn't become a trend.
