In honour of the big birthday bash occurring next door tomorrow, here's a wonderful rendition of The Battle Hymn Of The Republic performed by the Three Irish Tenors. Those with a bit more time on their hands can watch, in its entirety, Stagecoach, a 1939 classic Western. Incidentally, more similar full-length films can be found here.

Your western or eastern Reader Tips are most welcome, as always, in the comments.

Ryder Hesjedal, Canada's only Tour De France participant managed to hang on while his team rode the fastest time today. The man is 6 foot 3 which makes him not designed for high speed riding. Last year he placed 7th and this year I predict 4th. That'd be a huge result.

Check out this bizarre, elitist column that tries to explain to people outside of Canada what stephen Harper is trying to do:

http://ca.news.yahoo.com/blogs/canada-politics/stephen-harper-changing-canada-stealth-not-necessarily-majority-165506070.html

Heres one weird assertion:

"The Harper government singlehandedly made Vichy a household name in Canada."

Just read the entire thing, Gord. Every word.

Yawn. And the point the author was trying to make was ... ???

Rw: but what is the "Vichy" thing all about?

Evidently there's always room for another Harper-is-the-antichrist op ed.

Seems,

Naumetz is a writer of socialist fiction trying to relate his prose to real life.
Somehow he misses a simple notion that people do things they do because they want to do them. Unrelated to his fiction, that those things that were done in the past somehow should not be thought of, unless of course they don't agree with someones political views.

Does this character actually getting paid for the nonsense.

Remember, in April of last year the "journalist" was begging Kate to remove a post so he could get a job?

Gord, the only possibly relevant reference I could find was this one: http://www.vivelecanada.ca/article/235930972-u-s-denies-prince-of-pot-marc-emery-transfer-to-canadian-prison

I'm assuming that amongst the extreme Leftards, the Conservatives are a faux government, whereas the "real" one is is seated somewhere else, waiting to return.

Considering that the link I provided deals with Pot Baron Marc Emery, we can reasonably conclude what many of these "Vichy Canadian" repeaters have been smoking!

Weren't the Vichy useful idiots/cowards for the Nazis? Ahhhhhh....now I get the leftards reasoning(?)
On nother note, the socialst teachers union here in Edmonton are screaming against 1200 job loses. What they don't say,or is reported by the MSM,is that the jobs are NOT being lost, just moved. So the entitled little teach has to get up at 7 AM to drive 2 miles to his/her job, instead of 8 and just walking across the street. Where's a Reagan when you need him.

This is not a readers tip, it's a request. Does anyone know of any intelligent left-wing blogs? I'm perfectly serious. I've just wasted hours (in total, over the past couple of days) at Fred Clark's "Christian" blog over at Patheos (they host The Anchoress too, so I assumed that they were a quality site) trying to have a discussion about illegal immigration with the smuggest collection of humourless idiots I've encountered outside a University campus. These people's world-view is not only ludicrous, they appear to have no capacity to absorb information or formulate an argument at any level. I've never done that before and I won't again (I believe Larsen is given to trawling for converts at HuffPo. Sheer masochism).

It's possible to be wrong without being stupid, surely? Anyone know any smart left-wing blogs?

Black Mamba, check out Terry Glavin's blog:

And The Tyee, for the debate:

O'Humour Hour of Power. Hildabeast is such a comic.

"Hillary Clinton chided Syria from Lithuania for failing to heed her advice to reform".

"The Return of Reality"

Referring to the "Big Bash" south of the border, I had a quick look at some of the big MSM sites (Fox, NBC, CNN, Reuters). You couldn't tell that it is some kind of a holiday. Unless they are ready do dazzle us later, but I wouldn't hold my breath...

Tom B.

@Justthinkin, 1:57am
I don't know where you got your idea that teaching jobs are being moved and not lost; please enlighten us.

What actually happened here is that the Stelmach government was too gutless to stand up to teachers and signed a contract with them which agreed to make up all of the teachers' unfunded pension liability, a big $$$ hit. But in turn they haven't increased overall funding for education, so the school boards' allotment can't even cover the (reasonable) salary increases they also gave. My kids' school alone is losing three FTE of teachers for next year.

There were several parties to get us to the current mess we are in. A gutless government with hamstrung negotiators and twisted priorities, and a confrontational union...not a good combination. What will exacerbate this in the next few years is that the Universities are graduating so many new teachers that some won't ever work anywhere, and we'll surely see tear-stained reports on that in the media.

It's a mess, but no jobs are being "moved" anywhere, that's nonsense.

Clarice Feldman at American Thinker has a great column on Obama

http://www.americanthinker.com/2011/07/the_community_organizer_who_would_be_king.html

"Obama entered office on a groundswell of a disconcerting mania, a mania in which voters imagined on this blank slate of a candidate all sorts of truly fantastic abilities and policies, none of which were warranted in his paltry, truly shabby history.

The man with no available school records, for example, was painted as a genius and his brief time as a University of Chicago adjunct (basically teaching assistant) puffed up to a professorship in constitutional law. The guy who cannot speak a logical, coherent, grammatical sentence on his own was pawned off as a literary genius to unsuspecting, foolish voters. It was inevitable that the reality of his time in office could never match the dream. It was unfortunately equally inevitable that he would prove inadequate to the difficult job of the presidency.

Still, which of those who voted for him could have envisioned the hash he's made of things in every respect? Unemployment far exceeds what he warned it would reach if we didn't pass his stimulus package; the housing market shows no sign of lift off; the dollar sinks more each day; manufacturing is at a virtual standstill, and Americans grow more pessimistic about the economy each day. The landmark legislation of his first (and I hope final) term, ObamaCare, is so badly conceived and drafted that Americans are likely to see the best medical service in the world destroyed unless it is soon repealed or ruled unconstitutional. In the meantime, as uncertainty about its future grows, more and more businesses are paralyzed and unable to plan for their futures."

An additional key problem is that Obama thinks of Himself as King and the Pelosi-Reid-Obama triad are isolated in power from the 'mainstream' Democrats, Congress and the MSM.

Good article on how the Obama White House circumvents the American system to enact it's agenda.

Gord Tulk; Naumetz & his vichy reference reminded me of this:

"McCallum confused Vichy, the seat of the French government that collaborated with the Nazis during World War II, with Vimy, the World War I battle of Vimy Ridge"

Naumetz channels McCallum; both beclowned.

Wow, Lynas tells it like it is.
Posted on July 4, 2011 by Anthony Watts

This is in the UK Daily mail today, and it’s like sacrilege to the greens to have one of ther own say this:

"You mustn't believe the lies of the Green zealots. And I should know - I was one"

"By Mark Lynas"

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2010981/You-mustnt-believe-lies-Green-zealots-And-I-know--I-one.html#ixzz1R7Tu9FjG

From comments at WUWT:

"Latimer Alder says:

I agree with Grumpy. A sinner repenting is a Good Thing.

Readers outside the UK may not appreciate the significance of Lynas publishing this in the Daily Mail. The Mail is viewed with complete loathing by the Left and the Greens….as a written embodiment of a combination of both Bushes, Mrs Thatcher and Hitler – all having bad hair days.

For Lynas to publish there at all is an apostasy of great weight…to espouse nuclear power there is blasphemy and heresy beyond belief. He will not be on Greenpeace’s Xmas card list ever again!"

"Dr T G Watkins says:

The CO2 meme will be eradicated over the next years as climate fails to follow the computer models and Arctic ice cycles upwards.
The immediate serious threat to our economies comes from the Alice in Wonderland world of our politicians and their drive for renewable energy.
Any ‘green’, especially a relatively prominent one, who realises the futility of wind and solar should be welcomed with open arms."

Turtle

Just curious, but how can you say "so the school boards' allotment can't even cover the (reasonable) salary increases they also gave." and then say "Universities are graduating so many new teachers that some won't ever work anywhere, and we'll surely see tear-stained reports on that in the media."

If the supply of teachers greatly outweighs the demand for teacher, then I can see no reasonable argument for the teachers getting a raise of any sort. That said, I'm not too informed about the situation in Alberta. I'm just curious about your apparent conflict of statements.

Mamba

It's my belief that the Left has been usurped by radical Progressive Commies; and the language of classic liberalism along with it. I also believe that classic liberals have either migrated already to Conservative and GOP parties; or, have yet to realize they've been duped and have been sold on the rhetoric about evil conservatives. I've often commented that the stigma of conservatism is a much stronger deterrent than any conservative policy can be attractive for many people. This is because of the tilted education system I suspect. Add the deliberate dumb-ing down of the public education system by the school board and you graduate useful idiots with degrees in education where there's no job opportunities by the 1000s and you have your army of idiots.

So why can't you find reasonable dialog on the Left? It's because today's Left, from a policy stand point, is pure folly and intended to solve nothing. It's Simply to propagate the Progressive Dream Ponzi Scheme. You cannot have reasonable dialog about unreasonable objectives; especially when those objectives are singular and finite: Utopia.

Hope that helps.

The so called CBC's Neil Macdonald is lecturing us on the rush to judgement in the Dominique Strauss-Kahn's rape case in NY.
http://www.cbc.ca/news/world/story/2011/07/02/f-vp-macdonald-strauss-kahn-judgment.html

Remember CBC's coverage of the fabricated smear known as Wafergate Neil?
Or your own reporting of who the real mother of Trig Palin is?

AGW is beyond parodying when stuff like this is seriously suggested:

They want to cull wild dromedaries in Australia because their flatulence might be contributing to global warming.

We're winning!

Stan - it seems that the woman in the DSK case is getting dodgier by the minute. She seems to have made a false rape claim as part of her immigration appeal among other things.

http://neoneocon.com/2011/07/02/the-strauss-kahn-accuser-and-female-genital-mutilation/

DSK is a sleaze, and people's defenses of him were very revealing (Ben Stein, you're dead to me). But I don't see this going to trial and I don't think it should.

chutzpaticular, thanks. I'm vaguely familiar with Glavin; I'll check out both sites. (It's not so much intelligent writers/bloggers per se as intelligent commenters I was curious about. I mean, Davenport has us. Who do we have?)

Indy - I agree with that. The people at the blog I mentioned are just morons, though, I think, more than anything. I actually woke up this morning with "this is how you waste your time!??" running through my head.

Black Mamba, the discussions after columns and articles on The Tyee are often worth reading. Rafe Mair, who is a regular columnist there, wrote a very good list of reasons why the long form census should be scrapped. Terry Glavin is intelligent, funny, left on some issues, conservative on others, frank and, the kicker, he's Irish. Before reading his blog, I had thought he was just green. :) The posters are not many, but his knowledge of Afghanistan comes from personal and professional experience. You CAN post there. I haven't figured out how yet.

Ahhh.... the Nocturnal One Black Mamba(NOBM) has slithered from her layer while the sun's still up.

FYI, I've put to rest my fantasy that you've occupied for years now, as I've realized that I'm too old to keep-up with your Night-Owl lifestyle.

Indiana Homez: "slithered from her layer"...?

At least you can watch "Stagecoach"...

today's 'artists' aren't even pretending anymore, it's like they're saying "just give us money because we say we deserve it"

now you can buy..absolutely nothing in the name of 'art'..prices range up to $10,000 and over for....nothing...pity gore beat them to that concept with 'carbon credits'

www.nonvisiblemuseum.com/

Black Mamba, I second chutzpahticular's recommendation of Transmontanus (Terry Glavin), but I don't think it's really accurate, or sufficient as a description, to characterize him as a leftist -- or at least, not in the, erm, Mallickian/Sid Ryan sense of the word, because so many of his fundamental views are anathema to those of the (current-issue) broad left. He's a rocked-ribbed supporter of Israel, for example, who has essentially disavowed, and continues to excoriate, not just the left's anti-semitism but also their hypocrisy on such issues as women's rights in Afghanistan. He condemns the fascistic nature of Islamism, too, and he supports free thinking Cubans who have been apprehended and abused in the putative socialist paradise.

He certainly has roots in, and his POV is informed by, *a* labour movement, but a much older one that has little to do with the self-identified issues of the current left; I think of him as an iconoclast and an independent thinker who's not beholden on a case-by-case basis to any particular point of view.

He's a one-off. I'd call him a Glavinist.

EBD, I agree. He's an original.

Im confused.

on one hand, possessions are the earmark of success..... but with today's 3 million dollar cognac economy it leads to financial crisis after financial crisis.

Asia pollution blamed for halt in warming

Smoke belching from Asia's rapidly growing economies is largely responsible for a halt in global warming in the decade after 1998 because of sulphur's cooling effect, even though greenhouse gas emissions soared, a U.S. study said on Monday.

http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/07/04/us-climate-sulphur-idUSTRE7634IQ20110704

@Revnant Dream

I was actually just coming here to point that one out.

Liberal politicized science: If the earth warms, it's because of pollution. If the earth stops warming, it's because of pollution. If the earth starts cooling, it's because of pollution.

Same story with hurricane frequency and intensity, precipitation, the ozone layer, etc., etc., etc...

I think the really sad thing is that so many people still buy this stuff.

EBD (BTW thank Jeebuz you're alive!) etc. - if someone I knew on the left said "I'm curious; who can I engage?" I'd send them here, or to Ace of Spades HQ, or to Jim Treacher, or to David Thompson, or - are there no equivalents on the left?

Indy, you're daft, I'll sleep when I want, don't bore me. I'll invade your dreams as I see fit.
