Happy 4th - a commemoration of the day the common man fought his way free of the tyranny of kings, their money and their armies to found a nation based on the sanctity of free individualism, self determination and unintrusive governance.
It is indeed a sad day that most of what the 4th is about has vanished from American culture and government. The founders warned of constant vigilance needed to safeguard freedom. They warned that if the people allowed monopolist bankers and corrupt politicians to collude in public policy making that they would become destitute debt slaves.
"I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around [the banks] will deprive the people of all property until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered. The issuing power should be taken from the banks and restored to the people, to whom it properly belongs." - Thomas Jefferson
Slavery wasn't "the" reason for the civil war, but it was certainly "a" major reason, one could easily argue it was the "the" plank in the States Rights campaign that led to the Civil War
Actually there is a better argument that slavery was a causus beli of the War of 1912....the trade that the US complained about Britain interferring with was..the slave trade....when actually the War of 1812 was simple opportunism to seize Canada while Britain was engaged in the Napolionic Wars.
Slavery as the causus beli of the "War of Northern Aggression" is a DemocRat Party myth.
Occam: "It is indeed a sad day that most of what the 4th is about has vanished"
A few years back, I read a great rant by someone decrying this very thing. The first thing he said to do to reverse that vanishing was to stop calling it the 4th of July and get back to calling it what it is - Independence Day. The 4th of July is a date on the calendar; Independence Day marks the day that people decided to throw off the yoke of tyranny.
He was right. Other observances are marked by their proper names - Christmas, Valentine's Day, Labour Day, Thanksgiving - and Independence Day should be as well so that its reason doesn't vanish. (The Canadian exception is Victoria Day, now widely referred to as the May long weekend or, even more cringe-inducing, the May long.)
So, to any American SDA readers, Happy Independence Day.
IN A WORLD THAT HAS TROUBLES WHO COMES FIRST. THE U.S. ALWAYS THERE TO HELP. THE LEFT ONLY RUNS AND HIDES. GOD BLESS THE USA. GOD HELP THE REST OF US.THAT IS NOT SO MUCH THE LAST 3 YEARS.THE US IS HIDING UNDER A BOX. PLEASE GIT BACK WHERE YOU SHOULD BE. HELPING THOSE THAT NEED HELP,AND STANDING FOR WHAT IS RIGHT.
Curious, Sasquatch - States' Rights, economic factors, sure; but all roads led back to Slavery. Guys, c'mon, this isn't the point of this thread, but really...
Ah, yes, the catch-all for the left...something that happened years ago and they always forget to mention that the first recorded slave owner in the British Colonies that became the US was...a black man.
Of course they also neglect to mention that the slave traders bought what other black tribes were selling...but there's nothing like a little collective self-flagellation over something that nobody alive today in the US, Britain, or Canada had anything to do with to keep the black population from realizing their own potential and reach true equality without handouts..racism, thy name is liebral.
I see everyone as equal...not needing anything from anybody to feel equal...and all that 'affirmitive action' programs and the like do is maintain an inequality by taking away opportunity and substituting handouts and bribes.
ABC’s “This Week” began its Independence Day weekend program with a segment that echoed Time magazine’s cover story questioning whether the Constitution matters anymore.
After historian Douglas Brinkley said, “We shouldn’t act like [the Founding Fathers] were somehow omnipotent,” ABC’s John Donvan responded, “They were not gods, they were guys — guys who didn’t give women the vote and let slavery stand.”

“A Fourth of July Seder”
Prager provides a script for an Independence Day “Seder” to "keep the memory alive" of the great past of the United States of America and symbols for remembrance. Here’s a snippet:
Spend ten minutes doing this on the Fourth.
If you follow this simple ceremony, this holiday will not be just another barbecue. It will be the meaningful day it was meant to be: a celebration of the birth of our exceptional country, the United States of America.
You are encouraged to add more to your Fourth of July Declaration. This ceremony is only a starting point. But even doing this minimum will mean a lot ‐‐to you, to your family and friends, and to the nation.
*Feel free to read this “note to host” to those assembled at your celebration of the day.
MATERIALS
● Iced tea
● Salty pretzels
● Strawberries and blueberries and whipped cream, but any goodie colored red, white, and blue will do.
● A small bell (the ringer on your cell phone will do in a pinch.)
● An American coin (the bigger the better; a half dollar is ideal, but a quarter will do).
● A printed (unsigned) Declaration of Independence.
Download an unsigned copy to print.
● Lyrics to “God Bless America” for all your guests.
- Pull all the troops from afghanistan and Iraq now.
- Stop blind support for Israel. Support Palestinians UN bid. 2 states for 2 people.
- Reduce the defence budget by 50%. Put the money toward deficit reduction and health care.
- Learn to travel more and be more open toward the rest of the world: Get a passport and use it. See the world.
I as an American (Canadian Born) am marking this 4th of July in an unscientific, but likely Jinx or wishful thinking (Kind of like the science behind AGW)… My wife an I have a Flag agreement that places the Canadian Flag @ the Road entrance to our property & the Stars & Strips are flown from the upper Balcony on our House, not visible from the Road.
The day before the 7th Stanley Cup Game I flew a new Canadian Flag @ the Road... Canada Lost…
On July 3 (Yesterday) I flew a New Flag from my upper Balcony… It is a pox on the “Wet Nurses” that front the Man-Child’s administration.
Wet Nurse # 1 Lisa Jackson: EPA & Soros bimbo
Wet Nurse # 2 Hillary Clinton: Sec of State . (UN/EU)
Wet Nurse # 3 Janet Napolitano : Home land Security (Border Control)
Wet Nurse # 4 Kathleen Sebelius: Sec of Health (Obama Care) She has a brain..
It is not a coincidence that females are fronting all the HOT spots for the Man-Child. He gets his butt kicked when left alone…During the Monk debate the Chinese indicated that they had the correct measurement, @ Copenhagen, of Obama.
Anytime the anti-american rant begins....I cringe.
Long ago I realized that the USA was Britain's long struggle for democracy....carried on by other means.
The USA constitution was greatly influenced by British Common Law....
The one facet that flaw the US effort was the matter of slavery.....a situation partially remedied by the Treaty that ended the War of 1812. I am referring to the terms where the US ceased importing African slaves.
I often muse about the love/hate relationship between the Brits/US and Canada/US.
The Brits openly resent the contribution of the US in WW2 and the US officially rejects the British Crown and yet their bi-centenial was a non-starter until the Queen showed up and ended when she left.
The vast mustering of US citizens to the Canadian/Brit military in 2 Wars and the signifigant participation of Canadian citizens in the US military in the Viet Nam event.
Is the US an evolved extension of Britain? Is Canada a compromise between the 2 or a satellite of both?
Thanks much, and some of you may like this bit from our local celebration: To help us do it right, there was a band from Saskatoon, sponsored by, as I recall, a Lions Club. (They looked to be high school kids, though I am not as good a judging those ages as I was when I was closer to them.)
They performed well, and behaved even better.
So I told them something I've believed for years: The United States is fortunate to have Canada as a neighbor.
(I do wish they could have seen more of the parade. This Seattle suburb, Kirkland, does it just right, in my opinion. They start with kids, all the way from babies in strollers to fifth or sixth grades -- and follow the kids with the main parade, starting with the veterans. And then a little bit of everything.)
sasquatch - not to put too fine a point on it, but doesn't it make sense to speak of the Anglosphere? Who walloped the Nazis, Imperial Japan, Soviet Union, made, and makes actual sacrifices for the oppressed and distresssed throughout the world? The answer is: the members of the Anglosphere: Canada, UK, America, Australia.
Which former colonial possessions are not present-day hellholes? Mostly, former British colonies; although local customs have overwhelmed the heritage of decency the British left in some well-administered former colonies ( Pakistan, Bangladesh, etc, etc. ).
Who has taken on the Islamic terrorists in Afghanistan?
Despite the love-hate relationship mentioned, there is no question who allies with whom in a fight and recognize a kinship with each other.
"For abolishing the free System of English Laws in a neighbouring Province, establishing therein an Arbitrary government, and enlarging its Boundaries so as to render it at once an example and fit instrument for introducing the same absolute rule into these Colonies"
Hey Quebec NDPiste,
Here is a little advice for you, how about actually getting to know a couple of Americans in person, not from reading about them in the media, before favoring us with your advice! Aside from that, I hope you had a happy Canada Day.
I spent the fourth driving around the lake on my new Canadian made jet ski, which was a blast.
Why this blog? Until this moment
I have been forced
to listen while media
and politicians alike
have told me
"what Canadians think".
In all that time they
never once asked.
This is just the voice
of an ordinary Canadian
yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

mailserver in Europe)
I can't answer or use every
tip, but all are
appreciated!

Holy hell, woman. When you
send someone traffic,
you send someone TRAFFIC.

That was a good listen right up until he said "Slavery was the reason for the Civil War".
History fail for regurgitating revisionist history.
Independence Day will truly be in November 2012.
Seriously though, thank you!

Hey, you guys got mentioned in the Declaration -
"For abolishing the free System of English Laws in a neighbouring Province, establishing therein an Arbitrary government, and enlarging its Boundaries so as to render it at once an example and fit instrument for introducing the same absolute rule into these Colonies"
Refers to the Quebec Act.
God bless America and Happy Independence Day to our American friends.
