Slavery wasn't "the" reason for the civil war, but it was certainly "a" major reason, one could easily argue it was the "the" plank in the States Rights campaign that led to the Civil War

Actually there is a better argument that slavery was a causus beli of the War of 1912....the trade that the US complained about Britain interferring with was..the slave trade....when actually the War of 1812 was simple opportunism to seize Canada while Britain was engaged in the Napolionic Wars.

Slavery as the causus beli of the "War of Northern Aggression" is a DemocRat Party myth.

A few years back, I read a great rant by someone decrying this very thing. The first thing he said to do to reverse that vanishing was to stop calling it the 4th of July and get back to calling it what it is - Independence Day. The 4th of July is a date on the calendar; Independence Day marks the day that people decided to throw off the yoke of tyranny.

He was right. Other observances are marked by their proper names - Christmas, Valentine's Day, Labour Day, Thanksgiving - and Independence Day should be as well so that its reason doesn't vanish. (The Canadian exception is Victoria Day, now widely referred to as the May long weekend or, even more cringe-inducing, the May long.)

So, to any American SDA readers, Happy Independence Day.

Ah, yes, the catch-all for the left...something that happened years ago and they always forget to mention that the first recorded slave owner in the British Colonies that became the US was...a black man.

Of course they also neglect to mention that the slave traders bought what other black tribes were selling...but there's nothing like a little collective self-flagellation over something that nobody alive today in the US, Britain, or Canada had anything to do with to keep the black population from realizing their own potential and reach true equality without handouts..racism, thy name is liebral.

- Reduce the defence budget by 50%. Put the money toward deficit reduction and health care.
- Learn to travel more and be more open toward the rest of the world: Get a passport and use it. See the world.

Long ago I realized that the USA was Britain's long struggle for democracy....carried on by other means.

The USA constitution was greatly influenced by British Common Law....

The one facet that flaw the US effort was the matter of slavery.....a situation partially remedied by the Treaty that ended the War of 1812. I am referring to the terms where the US ceased importing African slaves.

I often muse about the love/hate relationship between the Brits/US and Canada/US.

The Brits openly resent the contribution of the US in WW2 and the US officially rejects the British Crown and yet their bi-centenial was a non-starter until the Queen showed up and ended when she left.

The vast mustering of US citizens to the Canadian/Brit military in 2 Wars and the signifigant participation of Canadian citizens in the US military in the Viet Nam event.

Is the US an evolved extension of Britain? Is Canada a compromise between the 2 or a satellite of both?

Thanks much, and some of you may like this bit from our local celebration: To help us do it right, there was a band from Saskatoon, sponsored by, as I recall, a Lions Club. (They looked to be high school kids, though I am not as good a judging those ages as I was when I was closer to them.)

They performed well, and behaved even better.

So I told them something I've believed for years: The United States is fortunate to have Canada as a neighbor.

(I do wish they could have seen more of the parade. This Seattle suburb, Kirkland, does it just right, in my opinion. They start with kids, all the way from babies in strollers to fifth or sixth grades -- and follow the kids with the main parade, starting with the veterans. And then a little bit of everything.)
