This is easily the best Canadian book on politics in the last 25 years.

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Patriot_Game_(book)

Everything brimelow discussed has been a big part of the canadian political dialogue since it was published.

While it was a very right of centre - anti-central Canada book even Peter gzowski said it was the book he made the most notes in the margins while he was reading it.

done & done!

Go Ezra!

Done.

Brimelow had it right except that he did not suspect that the Marxists fringe party would make common cause with the separatists and even usurp and supplant them.

Done! This may shake them up.

kulak: Did anybody until very recently?

Done

I think you can vote more than once. Is that wrong?

No vote for Ezra from me until he admits that having anti Canadian military hack Tarek Fatah on his show and not calling him on it was a mistake.

The man spends two days quiet rightly going after John McCallum and Ujjal Dosanjh for their remarks about the CF and then ignores Fatah's?

Very media party of him.

My personal ethics dictate that I would have to read all 12 books instead of "following the herd"; form my own opinions and vote accordingly. I honestly would rather eat a bucket of broken glass chased with salt water. Sorry to be a spoilsport.

Done

Everytime I try to read Shakedown, my blood starts to boil and I have to put it down.

So many died to stop Fascism during the 1930's and 1940's. Yet it's being forced upon us again under the guise of human rights.

Oh, and may everyone enjoy a wonderful Dominion Day!

Voted 4 times since I am at least 4 times smarter than anyone else.

I think I'd have to read at least "While Canada Slept" before I voted. Description sounds like it hits some good notes. If anybody has read it, is it an important read?

dwright, go ahead and bwrong!

Do you honestly think that every person voting for one of the books has read ALL of them? So, handicap Ezra, a friend of most of us SDA types and a brave crusader against the corroding politically correct culture that’s ruining this country—and help out the lefties who dominate the field. Check out the authors of these books: nine, at least, of the 12 are left-wing, journalistic insiders. So, the survey’s already fixed: the lefties who chose the books seem to have allowed one right of centre book—Ezra’s—to slip through in order to pay lip service, I guess.

This kind of competition is really just a survey: as I said 99.9% of voters won’t have read more than one or two of the books, if that. It’s more like a popularity contest, so let’s spook the lefties and give Ezra a BIG thumbs up!

GO, Ezra, go! (And, yes, I have read his book.)

Four thousand letters to the cbsc (whatever) over someone named Krista Erickson in an attempt to have bureaucrats remove the only televised conservative voice "allowed" in an entire country', and conservatives worry about reading cover to cover every submission and the morals of voting twice in an on line poll that allows you to vote more than once for a silly book award.

That's so cute.

From the site, if you click on the book.
Good luck skimming this POS

A Fair Country: Telling Truths About Canada
by John Ralston Saul
(published in 2008)
In an original vision of Canada, John Ralston Saul asserts that the country was not founded only on English and French values, but that it is a Métis nation, heavily influenced and shaped by aboriginal ideas: egalitarianism, a proper balance between individual and group, and a penchant for negotiation over violence. He also argues that a simple switch of words in the BNA Act adversely affected Canada’s image of itself, creating confusion as to the purpose of the state. And finally, he takes aim at our business leaders, bureaucrats and politicians, claiming that their unwillingness to take risks and lack of creativity is hurting the country.

Note that the site doesn't give the current vote total but asks you to sign up for their 'newsletter' to find out what they decide the winning vote will be.....

Go, tribe, go.

I note that there are 2 books condemning conservative PMs but not one of the dozens of anti-Trudeau or anti-Chretien books made it to this list of political books. The one that comes to mind is "Trudeau - his pride our fall" by Kenneth McDonald - a multi award winning book on the best seller lists for more than a year and in it's 4th edition printing - where is that book in this list?

I'm at a point where I believe No political discourse in the public theater in Canada is done without being "fixed" by lib-left partisan meddling. Proves it is impossible to have honest and fair discourse with a so called progressive.

'politics of greed'.

CONservatives reduced to 2 seats when kimmie kim calls an election.

I remember thinking at the time, why the fcuk is there such little interest in being leader of the party? obviously the top echelon insiders saw it coming.

Done. (I don't usually).

Hot damn, I KNEW I had the book.
Just found it. Will finally READ after re-reading Thomas diLorenzo's two books, Hamilton's Curse and The Real Lincoln, which, be assured, are strongly related to Ezra's arguments.

And sadly the recent SHAKEUP (CPC majority) won't attenuate the SHAKEDOWN.

Have read none of those books.

Based on the disqualification of ignorance, I refuse to vote.

Anybody out there read even half those books?

Did it once already

set you free, my argument for voting is above.

I believe, considering the nature of this shallow, popularity contest—by the left, for the left—that your scrupulosity is quite misplaced.

On this Dominion Day, it would be a “jolly good” pleasure to tip the lefty canoe!

(MND, I'm afraid that what you say about the Conservatives is too true. ’VERY sad—and terribly disappointing, considering the calumny their supporters have endured, ON THEIR BEHALF, for decades. “If ye break faith . . .” Honestly, if the Conservatives simply take over the helm of the bad ship “PC Canada”, the betrayal will be heartbreaking—and people like me will be VERY angry.)

I am pleased to announce that I voted for Shakedown. Dwight,I would never read anything written by that Saul creep, it would make me sick. You can read the rest, then vote for Ezra. Happy Dominion Day everyone.

Ezra Levant could write down a grocery list and it would still be more compelling than anything written for Trudeau.

It's a facetious example, yes, but that does not detract from Ezra Levant's ability to persuade.

I voted for the suggestions in Ezra' book Shakedown. The CHRC's kangaroo courts along with the incitement of racism/bigotry that these commissions knowingly or unknowingly propagate must be challenged.

SYF, I haven't read any of them, no will I. I voted for Ezra's, because I already know what's in it. I was "there" the whole time through the magic of the Interwebz.

Show me one other book on that list which makes even half the contribution to MY rights and MY freedoms that Ezra has made. None have, bottom line.

Therefore it is a no-brainer. Go Ezra!

Lucky Lori writes, “The CHRC's kangaroo courts along with the incitement of racism/bigotry that these commissions knowingly or unknowingly propagate must be challenged.”

With due respect, “unknowingly propagate” is simply not an option here. The HRCs are major weapons of class/race warfare, by design. Remember, it was the Liberals, who brought in these “Multicultural Uzis”, specifically in order to divide and conquer, and, to get votes from minorities forever.

Fortunately, the second part of the agenda is unravelling. Now, it’s up to the Conservatives, with their majority, to dismantle the HRCs. (The Conservatives stopped funding the Court Challenges Program, a slush fund for lefties to take social engineering, society-damaging cases to the Supreme Court, which was a good, first step. Don’t stop there, Conservatives!)

lookout: I've been telling a good friend that I fear that the CPC government won't end the gun registry nor the Kangaroo Kourts. My feeling is that the earlier meme -- 'we're a minority' -- with gradually morph into, 'look what strides we made in Ontario, we can't sacrifice this by kowtowing to western rednecks'. I'll be thrilled to be wrong.

As The Phantom sez, I already know what's in Ezra's book, which I own and am about to read.

Thought: I find myself daily amazed that I'm watching a super-smart, creative, energetic champion of limited government and liberty on -- gasp! -- Canadian TV. I'm so unaccustomed to this kind of rare treat that I find myself wondering how they'll bring Ezra down, if you'll pardon the conspiracist language.

Hey, MND, we are, it seems, as usual, on the same page. My husband and I watch Sun TV every day: Ezra is a national treasure! (So is Sun TV!!) Ezra’s just played clips of the VERY fine Jason Kenny, speaking at the citizenship ceremony attended by the Duke and Duchess: Kenny put Magna Carta and our BRITISH heritage, monarchy and all, front and centre. Yeah!

To experience the repressive, PC agenda being taken on each and every day on Sun, with the very concerns I’ve had for decades—and seen excoriated by the left—is the greatest pleasure. THIS is what “true north strong and free” really means, not the obsequious (and mediocre entertainment) frivolity on Parliament Hill today. (I saw this on CBC, which I usually avoid like the plague, because of the Dominion Day coverage.)

At one point, there was a montage of Canadians speaking about how free Canada is and how they can say whatever they want: every person belonged to a visible minority. I wondered where someone like me fit in: I’m a white, British background Christian, who ISN’T free to say whatever I want, though my family was here over 200 years ago and helped to build the (reasonably) free country we enjoy today—the reason all these folks came here! “Diversity” has been a cover for the secular socialists to shove our precious and irreplaceable British, Christian foundation and heritage under the bus. (Whoops, I’m not supposed to say that!)

I still have hopes that the Conservatives, with their majority, will make a real difference and turn around the offensive and destructive agenda of the left. Who knows? If there’s a leadership challenge and Jason Kenny takes on the PM, Kenny’s my choice, hands down. I believe he’s got the guts—and the will that PM Harper seems to lack these days—to take on the PC cr*p in this country.

Well, when their 'research director', a Ms. Bastedo, has nothing on her resume except 6 years at the University of Toronto, until last fall, and the 'job' at Samara...what do you expect ? Fair and balanced ? small wonder there isn't a running total on the site and they'll likely post whatever vote counts they feel like...I see a future for her at Elections 'Canada'.

lookout: The one thing I cling to is that PM Harper is one very shrewed hombre -- he has to be. So maybe, just maybe, he's got ideas up his sleeve. I DO take comfort from his stalwart pro-Israel stand which I thought was politically risky. OTOH, a good friend argues that the Israel-haters are more or less confined to the academy/liberal elite, so perhaps his stance isn't as politically courageous at it seems, i.e., Israel is beloved by the great unwashed.

Yeah, those new immigrants feeling free to say what they want. That's accurate. They are a protected group.

Finally, remember that Asian shopkeeper who captured and held a shoplifter and was initially charged. He got a audience with PM Harper, his English being so bad he had an interpreter in tow. Were this me, or you, the charge would have stuck and there'd be no audience with the PM.

MND, I hear you: all good points.

Yes, PMSH is very shrewd. His new term is young. Let's see what's up his sleeve. I hope people like me and you end up liking it! (If not, I'll dislike PMSH quite intensely.)

Talked to ezra very briefly at the wildrose party convention this past weekend - he seems to be having a blast with the new gig. I'm happy he seems to have found his niche.

lookout - we are in complete agreement. I used the term "unknowingly propagate" because I think a significant number of people that support the CHRC's are deceived. The Charter of Human Rights and Freedoms, introduced in 1982, has had nearly 30 years to successfully brainwash the Canadian population.

Those 35 years and younger have no idea what Canada was pre Human Rights (slights)and (loss of)Freedoms. It's all they've ever been fed-it's their first language; mother tongue so to speak.

Speaking of rights, I'm extremely concerned about these new bills. C-51: Investigative Powers for the 21st Century Act and bill C52 There are so many dangers to our liberties therein, I hardly know where to begin.

The bills focus on: information disclosure, mandated surveillance technologies, and new police powers that threaten to fundamentally reshape the internet and freedom of expression laws. "Bill C-52 was the first bill to apply to consumer products, giving Health Canada inspectors sweeping new powers which undermined the rule of law." An excellent summary of this be very afraid bill can be found here: nhppa.org/?page_id=24

Below is a link to the act with highlights on C51. This is a handy site, you can read and check on the status of any bills - just click check status on the right and there will be a listing of all the bill and an option to read the entire text of each bill.

Btw, a Google search on these bills brings up blogs with very informative articles, both conservative and liberal, that interpret what these bills will do to the freedom of Canadians. Seems both sides agree that these bills are very dangerous to Canadians for the same reasons. The HR kangaroo courts will be replaced by an animal with teeth that can put you in jail for up to two years. If the bill gets passed, say good bye to posting your thoughts or providing a hyperlink to a site that is considered incitement of hate in any form. Also included are major restrictions on posting and emailing with "fake names".

Lucky Lori, many thanks for the tips about these bills. I'll check them out.

Typically my ethics wouldn't allow me to vote unless I've read all the books. But since we aren't electing the chair of the UN conference on disarmament I figured, what the hell, I'll vote for Ezra.

I'm voting for The Democratic People's Republic of Korea for Chairman of the UN Conference on Disarmament.

And for the book, voted for Ezra, though I still fondly remember JR Saul and his spouse taking all their friends on a Scandinavian tour at our expense.

Gord Tulk - I agree "The Patriot Game" is an excellent book, incisive and well written though it's a US perspective and a bit dated now. I am the proud owner of a hardcopy version.

Stevie Cameron's book is garbage and doesn't belong on any best political books list - shoddy journalism, the same crap that got CBC sued by BM.

The best political book of the past 25 years is not on the list IMHO - "The Trouble with Canada" by William Gairdner, which has been updated from when it was first published, in the early 90s I believe.

Jack Granatstein's "Who Killed the Canadian Military?" (I think) is another beauty.

I agree with Gord Tulk (1st comment in the thread). Peter Brimelow apparently didn't get on the list. The Patriot Game came out in 1986, so perhaps it was just on the 25 year mark. I was given a copy of the book by Stephen's brother, and it is still visible on the shelf, not packed away in a box. The issues that were discussed are still important. Perhaps I should pull it out more often.
