Why not start with the plants that power Washington, DC.?

And why just five? Give this Big Labor administration a taste of their own tactics and shutter them all. The only thing more dismaying than the Marxists at work destroying the US economy is the flaccid, apologetic response by the industries targeted. They should take on this incremental Chavez and get it over with - while they still can.
They either don't have the patience to wait perhaps 50 years until better technology is developed to replace the traditional energy sources (assuming the technology would ever exist), or they are deliberately trying to destroy Western industrialized economies in favour of their global Commie delusion.
It simply doesn't make sense to shut down existing energy sources, although it would make a lot of sense to continue to develop ways of making them cleaner. Meanwhile it doesn't stop scientific entrepreneurs from experimenting with new stuff until they hit on something that could actually be developed some day as a replacement. We can walk and chew gum at the same time, but the Lefties don't seem to have the patience for either. They want "Revolution Now!"

The USA is in severe economic trouble, and yet Obama and his other elite cronies in government still want to impose regulations based on pseudo-science.

If the USA falls off a cliff it will be in large part because of all the left-wing vultures and other assorted fat cats that Obama is letting run the show. Gore, Soros, Pelozi, it's a long list, and they all stand to profit from the fall of the USA.

The U.S. utility companies have a long and sordid history, dating back to about 1970, of sucking government ass in return for being allowed to stay in business. Their batlle cry seems to have been, "Go ahead and kick me, but please take off your boots first". They deserve to be abused because they won't fight back.

Whenever I see the Feds use the phrase common-sense in a sentence, my BS alarm goes off. I.e., like when they (the Feds) refer to common-sense anti-civil rights gun control here in the U.S. of A.

Government has required utilities to function as state controlled monopolies since the turn of the last century.
Anyone who knows anything about how power companies work, particularly those in generation and T&D, know that utilities are completely captive of government policy and directives. By law. And any power company which did this, as is so idiotically suggested here, would be guilty of mass murder. People die every time the power goes out for a prolonged period. Or are some of you under the delusion that it's possible to just cut off the Capital District? And any power company exec which implemented such insanity would and should be immediately arrested.
Why should anyone be surprised ?. It was the granola chomping foam at the mouth tree huggers and the young "never had to work for a living" crowd that put him in power in the first place. He has surrounded himself with like minded advisors and professional activists, insuring that he hears all the things that boost his ego. He actually believes he is doing everything right and will be disillusioned when his world caves in later this year. His reality check will come when the economy does not turn around and the most powerfull nation in the world approaches 3rd world status. His only bright spot for now is that there really is no credible opposition to fire up the public. When things really start to fall apart even his terrific speech writers will not save him. Unless he can turn the economy around within a year, he is toast. Since he has no common sense.....he is toast.

Free, I suspect that if the American people were to threaten this fellow (Bari OB) or attempt to force him from office, the 'Tzar' would declare Martial Law and get his pals in the ME and China to back him up. Much of the time, those 5 AEP plants ARE the power for "Northern Virginia" and Wash. D.C. But during peaks, Dominion and PEPCo will black-out their "other" sevice areas to keep the aircon on in DC.
