It's the ultimate in "hopey-changey". The idea that a culture that has never known democracy in its history, never been educated about democracy in its schools, has never even conceived of the idea of the sort of inalienable rights that must underpin a democracy, would suddenly become "democratic" overnight simply because of the proliferation of modern gadgets like cell-phones or Internet, is stupid beyond words.
The Internet etc. helps, and I'm sure it's a boon to the tiny handful of citizens in Arab nations who do in fact understand genuine democracy and are fighting for it. But the masses are ignorant cretins and savages. Their idea of "democracy" is not much of an improvement over places such as totalitarian North Korea, whose official name is the "DEMOCRATIC People's Republic of Korea".
That's what I find troubling about the Obama administration's approach to the "Arab Spring". They have stated that whatever sort of "democracy" is established will be recognized by his administration -- "they don't have to be like us". Actually, they do have to be like us if there is any hope for freedom, as long as we have patience and keep in mind that it took over 2,000 years for modern democracy to develop even in the West.
But by stating that "they don't have to be like us", Obama has opened the door for whatever tyranny to come in and take over, so long as they slap on the word "democracy", just as North Korea and other tyrannies have done in the past.

The generalizations on here about Islam are just that: generalizations. As with any country, religion, organization, community, etc., there are good and bad members. Just because there remain extremists in northern Africa and southwest Asia does not mean ALL of the people in the area are the same.
