Venezuela: Another Socialist Utopia Gone Wrong

Talking with Canadian socialists can provide hours minutes of amusement. They'll rant on & on & on about how terrible Stephen Harper is and that capitalism is the root cause of all of our problems. Point out to them that their government paycheque wouldn't be nearly as generous without a vibrant private sector capitalist economy and you'll get blank looks from the dumber ones or denials from the smarter ones. To that latter group it's most interesting to point out that socialism has eventually failed wherever it has been tried. They'll insist though that it just hasn't been done right yet.

Case in point is Hugo Chavez, dictator of Venezuela. He appears to be yet another failed "Great Leader" whose ideas of the state controlling most everything simply do not work.

Lessen the incentive of a man to work harder & more productively and you destroy an entire nation of such men. Yet this simple truth is seemingly impenetrable into the minds of Leftists. If a new iPhone app could somehow visualize the proverbial light bulb above each person's head, is there any doubt that on top of the craniums of the Left we'd see curly-cue CFL light bulbs; exceptionally dim of course.

"... is there any doubt that on top of the craniums of the Left we'd see curly-cue CFL light bulbs; exceptionally dim of course."

Not to mention slow to come on and quick to malfunction.

One of the best sources of Venezuelan news is "El Universal" out of Caracas:

Look at the headlines today.

"Venezuela implements power saving measures"
"Business sector asks government to stop harrassing merchants"
"Venezuela rated the worst perform in acountability"
"Pdvas misses out opportunity to consolidate markets"
"Venezuelan prison riot leaves 19 dead, 22 injured"

It reads like an Ayn Rand novel.

Not dim, mostly out I'd think because their light bulbs would be powered by little propeller beanies that wouldn't be spinning no matter how fast the wearer was.

I note that Chavez went to Cuba to get his ulcer operated on last week...doesn't he trust his own Venuzalan surgeons? 8-)

On the homefront war on socialism a piece by Lorne Gunter celebrating 50 years of NDP Socialism with the most sarcastic and witty best of Gunter. A classic. http://fullcomment.nationalpost.com/2011/06/14/lorne-gunter-ndp-celebrates-50-years-of-shade-grown-champagne-socialism/

Let's all just pretend the Nordic nations, and Canada (which are all economically far healthier and freer than the US) exist, and instead focus on failed examples.

Yes - and the mercury would explain their IQ

Venezuela and Hugo Chavez, the NDP's wish for Canada.

As Ann Coulter says, they are a mob mentality, with cultic dogmatic practices.
It would be like trying to prove to Jim Jones that poisen Kool-aide is bad for you.
Not a safty from being overtaken.
As a moserd example try telling a gay Islam is no healthy forthem. They will deny it, over dead bodies.

Well, like Cuba there are some successes - they do export good baseball players.

Rabbit: There is another good blog about Venezuela called "The Devil's Excrement"
http://devilsexcrement.com/

Scroll down a couple of pages to the article on how the government shut down the lovely horse racing track to convert it into temproary housing (and screwed that up).

Yep, so true, we knew we were dealing with anything but a socialist when our prime minister refused to bail out GM, spent only fifty million on the G8/G20, renounced global warming as a hoax, and shut down the CHRC and the CBC.

Thank God for Insert Namehere, our wonderful leader.

"you'll get blank looks from the dumber ones or denials from the smarter ones."

I think it should be blank looks from the dumber ones or denials from the even dumber ones. I don't think they come in smart. :)

The "socialist" Left in Canada is seriously a joke. Not only is Chavez a Marxist autocrat but he is also a military dictator. Nobody mentions the fact (e.g. the CBC) that the man's official title is CORONEL Hugo Chavez. So much for the Left's pretended hatred of military types.

And of course the Left always fails to mention that Marxism/communism doesn't eliminate capitalism -- it simply takes capitalism out of the hands of the individual and concentrates it into the hands of the State. It turns capitalism into a State monopoly. After all, Venezuela doesn't give its oil away, it sells it on the open market!

Chavez has failed so hard even the left takes notice. It seems the center-left people elected in that region nowadays are what might be called 'market left': a welfare state but without the nationalization hubub.
