The Heart of the Problem

SDA regular Ricardo wrote something so profound and insightful that it deserves its own thread:

"Getting Past the Vancouver Riots of 2011-06-15"

We'll never get past it, no matter how good-hearted the people of Vancouver are in voluntarily cleaning up and lifting everyone's spirits. The reason Canadians will never get past it is because we have set ourselves up for it to happen again, and again and again. And the thugs know they will be able to get away with it again because Canadians will simply swallow it all "with a let's feel good about ourselves" party afterwards. The problem will continue to be with the justice system and politically-correct policing.

There was a brief interview with one of the first thugs who was arrested and charged in the riot on my local news last night. He had a big smile on his face as he left the Vancouver jailhouse and said non-chalantly: "Oh well, I guess I'm going to have to face these charges in court". As if he was fighting a parking ticket or a minor speeding ticket. That's because he knows his punishment will probably be even less than a speeding ticket -- he probably won't even pay a mandatory fine, much less see any jail time.

Until our airy-fairy judges can find the balls to actually hold people responsible nothing is going to change. For example, there is a thing called "restituitive/restorative justice" that judges in the U.S. exercise from time to time. Basically it means that if you break something then you pay for it (plus jail time for other charges if applicable). It means that if you break a $2,000 plate glass window, then the court clerk is waiting there after sentencing to gather your financial information and ready to put a lien on your bank account, or on that expensive flat-screen TV you have in mom's basement. If people were actually required to pay for what they break (plus labour), then I can guarantee that they would think twice about breaking stuff. Why should the taxpayer foot the bill?

And how about getting the insurance companies and store owners involved? Let them sue the thug as well -- why should the store owner have to pay for his increase in insurance rates that will inevitably follow his claim, and why should the insurance company pay in the first place when the person responsible has been arrested and convicted and can be held liable? Insurance companies have excellent investigators -- better than cops -- and collection agencies are quite good at making people's lives miserable for many many years. I'd love to see that happen to the thugs -- the natural offspring and spoiled brats of our "gimme gimme" Unionist, entitlement, and special interest group generation.

When I was kid we were brought up to pay for stuff we broke -- even if it was an accident, we at least offered to pay. And we took it out of our allowances or part-time jobs. Sorry, but no kudos to Vancouverites and their good-will story. They're suckers.

Bingo!

Excellent.

Perhaps it was just the NDP convention-starting 2 days early.

Just one cavil on Ricardo's comment: the '"gimme gimme" Unionist' -- my old man was a Teamster and I do not like to think about what he would have done to me if I'd treated other people's property like that. (But that was old-school private-sector unionism, so probably not Ricardo's target.)

And this is why ladies and gentlemen the Canadian government should have charged little Miss DePage when she decided to abuse the throne speech to give herself a little attention to her over inflated plight. Instead the authorities chickened out scared of the backlash that might occur. It sends a message to the Anarchist thugs to do as you please without facing the consequences.
If this was Singapore this little prick wouldn’t be smiling because in a short time his ass cheeks would be split wide open from a few lashes of the Cain. The Vancouver football stadium could be a fine place for entertainment before the CFL football season starts.

and the riot kissers have been identified...

Apparently the parents were told they should be proud! Proud of what? Herein lies the problem, people too stupid to understand that some things are just wrong.

How many times am I going to roll my eyes over some old fool's "back in my day" guff about kids? You mean back in the 50s, the days of greasers and bike gangs? The 40s, with zoot soot riots? And don't even get me going about the 60s. Yawn.

Insurance companies do have very good investigators. The problem is that the cost of taking someone to court to recover damages often costs much more than the damage itself. Further, if the damage is substantial, the prospect of collection usually becomes remote. This is one more reason that our insurance premiums are so high.

Yup. Not much going to change until the riots hit Canada's ivory towers: Rockliffe Park, Bridle Path and Westmount...where the judges and lawyers live.

Yep, and I'm sure the parents of the "classy girl" on her back on the pavement, dress hiked up and pantied ass showing -- as if ready to spread her legs -- would be proud too.

Hey mom and dad, the world loves your daughter's candy ass!

Bored? You could always find a new blog site to infest and call home. Just saying.

Dear Lloyd Fister, Please attack the meat of an idea, not something irrelevant to the idea. It doesn't matter who came up with an idea or when. A quick read here might help in the future: http://www.logicalfallacies.info/

The policy advocated by the author of this piece will never happen. Too many of our vandals are members of profiled groups, let alone completely dependent upon the state. The few affluent ones are the darlings of the leftist aristocracy, judiciary, and academia. Even suggesting such a policy will bring the author into contempt for racism.

The days of personal responsibility ended with the 50% + 1 vote for Trudeau. Better to adapt to your third world condition than to talk about the dead white male past.

I agree. Here are my comments cross posted from yesterday:

The time to deal with such a situation is THERE & NOW! We're now crying over spilt milk. There must be some middle ground between Syrian and Canadian methods.

The bottom line is, there isn't the political will to actually protect the city from rioting citizens. We invite this behavior by not having a deterrent. This is political, plain and simple! Another example of the collective pu$$ies we are.

And, it doesn't matter what Canadian city there's a riot in, nor the reason, the results would be the same.

I'm more ashamed at our impotence in handling such situations than I am at the behavior of the rioting idiots. I expect it from them, and expect more from us(naively).

----------------------------------

I am no fan of the police force, but I can hardly blame whomever is calling the shots for 'standing-off" so to speak. IF... the police had thwarted the dastardly thugs, there's no doubt there would be epic cries of "fascism" and "human rights violations" as there would be no tangible evidence anything was thwarted at all. Furthermore, there'd likely be a pink-slip for, or resignation from whomever is deemed responsible for the aggressive police action. Hmmm.... tough choice there for the Chief. They say in politics that "you can't buy votes with nuts and bolts" which seems to apply here.

Until there is the political will to plan and execute an appropriate corporal plan to prevent these riots, we can expect ‘nada’ from the police.

Idiots will be idiots; how we deal with them is up to us!

OT I support mandatory participation in the Canadian forces (under the correct circumstances)for a limited time for Canadian youths. This would be a great educational policy for Canadians, and a valuable contribution to our country. This would likely take care of many of our "issues" we face with kids today.JMO

If there was ever a solid argument for the return of the lash, we saw it in Vancouver Wednesday night. Most of the dim wits caught on camera appear to be frat boy types who would have a hard time (no pun intended) surviving among the really rough customers in prison. Twelve on the flogging table would be a saluatory lesson for those idiots, and a lot cheaper than providing a few months free room and board. Bring back the lash I say. The punks' backs will heal faster than the civic pride of Vancouver.

This is the idea I've had all along (the weak willed courts are another issue). Slap the assholes (those properly found guilty in court)with real fines apprpriate to the damage caused - be it $5,000 or $10,000. And garnish their wages, student loan or whatever their source of income and let the perps know the fine will follow them around like a bad smell until paid off.

"politically-correct policing"

uhhh.... ummmm..... uh, does that include laughing at the victim of a theft?

since the day that happened 7 cops around my city are now dead.

God is a cold blooded killer and He's taking requests. all it would take from *them* is an admission and apology which I have been patiently waiting for almost 6 years. some people never forget.

the good news is I figured out one aspect of the mind of God. He's using me to ferret out the bullies in a pattern which only became evident in the wake of the laughing cops. They show their bullying, He takes them out. numerous examples from a lifetime of being bullied by individuals and groups with ever increasing power. it seems the more power vested in the offender the harsher the penalty.

7 cops all dead because one of their buddies mockingly exclaimed (quoting now) "at least the thief isn't around anymore", chortle chortle.

feel free to call 519-661-5781 and tell defective cam halliday if what I just told you and if you please, tell him I'm broadcasting the message because he's the one that claims the laughter never happened.

they aren't dealing with me. this is not a deranged belief on my part. it is a statistically improbable outcome; a huge spike in area cop deaths *after* I get laughed in the face by 3 of them the first time I attempt to report a theft to the police.

y'all have an enjoyable end time. yawn.

I agree with Jamie MacMaster- as until the unrest hits the Beaches, Rockcliffe, etc - where the human rights supporters and dictators live - there will be no change.

Social equality and engineering for all but us upper class twits.

I clerked for a district court judge in law school - one of the very few who had a crimcourt background, so we got loads of criminal court assignments.

So I'll be sadly realistic here. The people arrested or tagged at these riots generally have no real attachable assets or accounts, and if they have jobs, they usually make less than the minimum $$ that you have to leave them with if you garnish their pay.

Jail time proportionate to what they've cost the city is the best way. everyone gets a base amount of days for the overhead - cops' time, cleanup, etc. - and then give them a day or so per $100 damage attributed to them personally.

It's the only way.

Just an FYI. There is no insurance where riots are concerned. These poor store owners are going to have to pay for the damages out of their own pockets. Likely many will go broke. Eventually premier snookie will try to hush them up with taxpayer funds. Clark, Moonbeam Robertson and chief Chu all need to be hounded from office for enabling this debacle.

Hi Ping - you need professional help fast.

You are not just deranged but bloody dangerous (laughter suppressed) = get a real job!

No I won't hire you to run any tractor.

I could not agree more!
Gawd i can still remember the day i stood in front of our local Judge appr. nicknamed Hangin Hay. I got caught driving impaired in my dads car i was 17, I damaged a guys lawn & a city pole & my dads car. I was just shittin my pants when i went up in front of him. Just before i did though a local troublemaker up before me of course smartmouths the judge "I see we've met before says the judge well 30days, guy yells back i can do that on my head, Slam 30 more says the judge do them on your feet"
Well sir this just made me almost faint Iam next, Judge says i see you have made Restitution to the property owers & your father. Yes sir every cent i had & i even did some of the work to the lawn myself.
He gave me 90 days licence suspension & $135 dollar fine And a stern lecture.
that was 38yrs ago Never drove drunk again Never got in trouble & Never forgot the stare i got from the Judge.

Wow ping, there's really not much to say about a comment like that. Maybe talk to someone in real life, like with a little PhD moniker before his name.

hello saskatchewan Lynx Shyt, that's your opinion because you haven't been laughed at by the cops after a lifetime of getting bullied.

karma she one nasty byatch.

and I'm still here capable *and* doing a google lookup every time a cop anywhere in Canuckistan croaks and it gets in the news.

a few minutes browsing the search links, find the phone # and use the flat rate long distance to laugh at *them* and tell them why.

ta, have a good weekend all.

Robert, exactly and thanks for re posting ricardo's comment as a thread of its own.

Don't anyone hold your breath though as the hug a thug crowd it too entrenched at the moment. It will take a societal effort to get disgusted enough to get rid of them.

Couple of points:

- I heard the kissing couple was actually a case of the girl being knocked over and hitting her head on the pavement. I can't confirm/deny though.

- a friend of mine suggested the anarachist thug/idiot types should be labelled terrorists and put on a no fly list, in addition to being dealt with as harshly as possible

Ping, you're neurotic, get help fast.

Some of these criminals may indeed get serious jail time. The arsonists who set fire to the police cars with cameras rolling for example have committed quite serious crimes. Arson carries a maximum sentence of 14 years in prison. Not sure what the current standard among BC judges is for that crime but even in peace moonbeam land it's going to be more than 2 years I would say.

Hey ping,
Enjoy yourself now because I think they are going to put Internet restrictions on inmates like yourself in the future (mostly due to inmates like yourself). Pssst...ping, I think I hear one of the guards coming.

GEN Y morons.
There hasn't been a more ignorant, self-centered and gutless generation of screwed up, no talent jack-asses in modern history.
The generational cohort in China and India will absolutely devour their collective lunches out in the real world...they already are.
They deserve a thorough life thrashing for being such imbeciles!

TrueNorthist: "These poor store owners are going to have to pay for the damages out of their own pockets."

Sort of. They're going to have to put their prices up to cover the damage -- you can't blame them -- and we, the customers, will end up paying for the damages.

I like bobby b's solution: base number of days in the clink and then a day/every $100 of damage they incurred because these anarchist punks/thugs/barbarians don't have any money; they're parasites who live off others, whether their families or the taxpayers.

IMO, Chief Constable Jim Chu should resign over this. He predicted before the game: "There’s not going to be a riot" (http://www.vancourier.com/VIDEO+Predictions+from+Vancouver+police+chief+city+manager+smoke/4957572/story.html) and then admitted, in an interview yesterday, that "Knowing what I know now, there's many things I would've done differently,"

DUH.

Why didn't he know what he didn't know? It's, apparently, because he hadn't done his homework...

The reason that they(the thugs) won't have to pay, is the continuing notion fostered by the left and the gov't that there is no such thing as private property.

Until our benevolent masters "give" us property rights, and "give" us the right to blast someone in the chest with an 870 when they break into our houses and shops without fear of being railroaded by the "legal" system, stuff like this will continue to happen.

I liked the old days where they put you in the public square. In stocks with carts full of rotten produce.
I once stole a toy from a store. My dad made me work their stocking shelves for three 3 days.
The humilation of working with people who knrew I was athief never left me as an example of civility. I never stole again. I was 12. No police where needed, no pshychologists, no weeping social workers, or lawyers. No judicuary with an agenda. In other words the parasites had not yet infected our institutions with Communists, socialists or Political elitists.
Just old fashioned justice that worked.

"Until our airy-fairy judges can find the balls to actually hold people responsible nothing is going to change."

No, the ultimate fault lies with the Canadian voters (present company excepted) who have allowed the airy-fairy judges to run their lives. Blaming it all on the judges is just whining.

Ping

Good one buddy...can we talk to Lloyd again?

Texan,
Unlike the U.S., we don't elect judges in Canada. Ultimately it's the responsiblity of the people who appoint them.

In regards to the original thread where Ricardo's post originated and my personal experience to which I also posted, I would like to say that my experience happened in White Rock, BC in 1978. I just find it relevant since White Rock is in close proximity to Vancouver, and anyone who knows White Rock also knows that White Rock is very different today than it once was.

If only the Blackhawks could have finished off the Canucks in the first round....

I have a sneaking suspicion that the kissin couple were muggin it up for the cameras. The same as all the other damn fools were.

Bottom line, the Trudeaupian establishment created a moral vacuum, and the Vancouver event is the sort of thing that inevitably fills it.

"Unlike the U.S., we don't elect judges in Canada. Ultimately it's the responsiblity of the people who appoint them."
______________

I know that. Accordingly, I did NOT say, "who have ELECTED the airy-fairy judges to run their lives."

You'd be better off if you DID elect your judges. At least then you could throw them out. But, still the problem lies with the electorate. You've allowed the politicians and the judges they appoint to become the principals, rather than the agents. Quit your whining.

As long as there is no punishment, the problem will continue. Count on it.

As soon as that Vancouver Police Chief opened his mouth, I knew that he was more of a political hack/appointee put inside a police uniform than an actual officer of the law whose job is to protect.

Good luck to all of us.

One often thinks that the less civilised get away with nothing and little after something like a massive damage in the lotus land is, so the judges and their buddies, the lawyers can have a steady and profitable employment.

Good luck and good sight.

Personally I find it quite refreshing that this amount of mayhem and carnage could be done by non Muslims. I was starting to lose hope with the kids of today and their lackadaisical attitudes. It shows the "can do" attitude is still alive in Canada.

ping: " . . . I figured out one aspect of the mind of God. He's using me to ferret out the bullies . . . "

No, son, I'm using the bullies to ferret out the whackos. Could you go stand over there now, please? I'll be right with you . . .

By God Fister is right: in the Sixties, scumbags exactly like him began the entire process of turning our cities into shitholes!

Thanks for the reminder Roid, I mean Lloyd.

I had posted this as part of a post before but I think it is worth discussing the critical point on this thread as we are looking at punishment for this debacle.

"At the G20 there were 13,000 cops, ETF, RCMP, and every type in between, armed to the teeth. Standing on Queen Street in front of the city hall I saw battalions of armoured police yet they all did nothing. ETF officers I spoke to told of training for 3 months to prepare for rioting.

In the protest march made up mostly of old hippies and young leftists, there were just maybe 100 max of the Black Block all marching as a group, that were bused into Toronto to perpetrate violence, and yet the police were ordered by their political masters to stand down and accept their destruction of our downtown, exactly I am certain as happened in Vancouver. I spoke with an ETF officer beside me and he told me they were to accept collateral damage as the Block sauntered by . The Block smashed cars and a streetcar right in front of us on Queen Street yet this overwhelming force, the greatest assembly of police Canada has ever seen, still did nothing. Exactly as we saw in Vancouver citizens were left on their own to try and defend their businesses or stop the looting by this tiny group of anarchists."

All our discussion on jailing these thugs, giving them the cane or whatever means nothing unless there is the political will to meet this head on and I don't see it.

How many people were actually convicted and sentenced for the vandalism at the G20? Maybe 1 or 2, I don't have a clue and I have followed this as I worked at the G20. This will happen in Vancouver also as the months and years go by and the lawyers get rich with the endless remands, commissions and committees.

/sarc on

syncrodox, surely you aren't suggesting that a cookie-cutter pathological troll like Fister would so something as obvious and juvenile as adopt another identity in a forum?

My God man, have some faith in human nature!

"Yep, and I'm sure the parents of the "classy girl" on her back on the pavement, dress hiked up and pantied ass showing -- as if ready to spread her legs -- would be proud too."
Maybe someone can find out her name and phone number so we can publish it for her. I mean, if she is so proud----------

I'd be open to some creative justice for these rioting dufuses.

Since they are mostly a bunch of minimum wage earning ignoramuses how about they get two choices:
Choice 1 - jail time for their crimes and criminal record that follows them for the rest of their lives, thus limiting their future employment and travel opportunities. Or...

Choice 2 - we will waive the jail time and criminal record, if they complete 12 months of community service to include

- cleaning the streets, gutters and alleyways of Vancouver
- emptying garbage cans
- removing graffiti, gum, etc from bus stops, park benches...
- backbreaking landscaping cleanup, etc.
- wearing of a pink coveralls, with a clear label on their back that reads "2011 Rioter", so that citizens who pass them will clearly know who they are, what they did and why they are doing the cleanup work.

If they can't truly pay for the damage they caused, they should be made to repay society in a way that inflicts the humiliation and derision they deserve while they at least contribute something back to our society.
