So what DOES happen to planes and ships when the GPS satellites suddenly get knocked out?

Thankfully if we all just reduce our production of CO2, events like this will not affect our environment.

It took my breath away...well sort of...

There I did my part for AGW today!

Mother nature can be spectacular.

Dave in Mississauga, next thing they will tell us is that if we reduce our CO2 the sun itself will cool down.

"So what DOES happen to planes and ships when the GPS satellites suddenly get knocked out?"

We will once again witness the horrific mayhem of the skies and oceans, that our tragic ancestors brutally suffered ... prior to 1996.

BREAKING NEWS....

Al Gore/David Suzuki press release today states that....

(wait for it)

....Sun Spots caused by SUVs and the Alberta Oil Sands....more later with Peter Mansbridge at 10pm....

I just knew it!

rabbit

dead reckoning and skills.

Does this mean winter is finally over?

Revnant Dream

one can only hope...

syncrodox:

"dead reckoning and skills."

We're all doomed.

rg:

The problem is that since 1996 our technology may have become dependent on GPS. The older methods of navigation may have atrophied.

Just like power outages threatened nobody in the 1700s.

I saw on The History Channel, that that object(Sun)?, was a natural occurance, and to not be frightened.

It's getting cooler?

If only I could believe unsubstantiated lies published as facts, I could be a Climate Change believer. Research is overated.

Probably a good opportunity for northern lights .... if only the damned clouds would go away.............

Well I hope it warms up things here, 13C here, yet 700km south in Minneapolis its 39C today. I guess global warming stops at the border, can't get past Canada Border Services.

A solar flare could have caused a minor extinction event at end last ice age see

Did_A_Massive_Solar_Proton_Event_Fry_The_Earth_999.html

I hope that means it is going to warm up in Manitoba!

The sun does not cause global warming.

Camels don't piss in the sand,
fish don't crap in the ocean.

New theory: there will be a volcanic eruption of major proportions within the next two weeks. Iceland or Sumatra would be the first thought, Japan or the US as the second.

This will not be funny.

I thought globalwarmingclimatechange was caused by AlGore, JamesCameron, and DavidSuzuki flying around telling people the sky was falling.

I don't get it. The BC carbon tax should have eliminated this.

It's the Sun, Son.

Maybe someone should replace it with a squigly lightbulb.

Scientists determine the Sun will extinguish itself in 2.6 billion years.

Time now to start hording heat lamps, propane lamps, and wood sheds.

I also have Sun life insurance if you wish to purchase it. Can offset carbon credits.

Interesting that the NASA article notes the 11 year sun cycle but mentions nothing about how the gigantic furnace affects earth's climate.

"It's the end of the world as we know it." (R.E.M.)

"So what DOES happen to planes and ships when the GPS satellites suddenly get knocked out?"

If we loose one or two satellites nothing much will happen. There are over 20 satellites up there to get a fix on and your GPS takes a reading from the 3-4 with the best triangulation. My Garmin usually sees 10-12 satellites at a time.

Don't worry once Al Gore, Suzuki and Dave Matthews get electricity banned the sun will be next!

orlin:

Problem is that a massive solar flair could take out all of these satellites at once. And countless golf carts will stop working properly.

Oh, the humanity.

My girfriend's temper is a lot like that!!

Does Gore play golf, I wonder?

Or just tyrannical power games with the lives of we, his serfs.

rabbit is right on the money.

".........a massive solar flair could take out all of these satellites at once. And countless golf carts will stop working properly...."

IOW a "Carrington Event".....1859....telegraph systems were fried....horses did fine....

All satellites smoked...
Any/all electronic components smoked...
All electric grid transformers/controls smoked.

No computers, no cars, no aircraft, no lawn mowers and even chainsaws and weed eaters disabled.

Only most pre-'50's point ignition systems...such as hand cranked model T's etc.....even they would sustain damage as their wiring systems would act as antenna's for the EMP conditions.

On the bright side a small proportion of the West's military systems are EMP hardened.

Al the fish in MB, you may have a point there.

When I watch the Weather Channel from Louisi-Yana they cut the temps, clouds, winds and rain off the TV Screen right smack dab at the US/Canadian Border. And, it always leaves me wondering if it's 20 degrees in Minniapolis what's the temp in Saskatchawan ?

As dependent as we are on GPS, there are other satellites out there that have a greater effect on our everyday lives. The loss of communication satellites would be absolutely crippling, but nothing could be worse than losing our beloved Anik.
