Not a political link but a useful one: The Khan Academy (http://www.khanacademy.org/) is a set of wonderful tutorials on Grade 12/U1 Math, Chemistry, Physics and Biology. They are hundreds of 10 minute videos that clearly explain scientific principles and are endearingly narrated by Sal Khan, who holds Math, Engineering and Comp Sci degrees from MIT. Very lucid, very enjoyable videos.

"Gore has the Midas touch in reverse".
"The Failure of Al Gore: Part One
Walter Russell Mead
It must be as perplexing to his many admirers as it is frustrating to himself that a man of Vice President Gore’s many talents, great skills and strong beliefs is one of the most consistent losers in American politics.
“All political careers end in failure,” said Enoch Powell; Gore has not won an election on his own since his 1990 re-election to the Senate from Tennessee. His 1988 presidential bid ended well short of the nomination. Many observers felt Gore was headed for defeat in a third Senate campaign as the south continued to swing Republican; Clinton’s offer of the vice presidential slot in 1992 gave Gore the opportunity to reach a national audience as his home state cooled. On his own again in 2000, gifted by the departing Clinton with the most bubbliciously expanding economy in American history and a comfortable budget surplus, and insulated from the innuendo and scandal of the Clinton White House by his still-vibrant marriage, he found the elusive road to defeat against a flawed and inexperienced challenger. Tennessee voted for Bush; Florida or no Florida Gore would have gone to the White House if those who knew him longest and best had rallied to his support.
Once out of office, he assumed the leadership of the global green movement, steering that movement into a tsunami of defeat that, when the debris is finally cleared away, will loom as one of the greatest failures of civil society in all time.
Gore has the Midas touch in reverse; objects of great value (Nobel prizes, Oscars) turn dull and leaden at his touch."

Postal workers will get their butts back on the job early next week so if your "cheque is in the mail"you'll get it soon with no thanks to the opposition seat fillers in the HOC.
Their striking has accomplished one thing, the NDP have proven they are not government-in-waiting material. They're a sham, professing to be all for the little guy, the very people they punished with their idiotic filibustering. Ditto the rump Liberals, Bloc and the Green Queen.
" ... objects of great value (Nobel prizes, Oscars) turn dull and leaden at [Gore's] touch."
I'm thinking particularly of his 40-year marriage to Tipper Gore, because of an alleged affair with Laurie David (Larry David's ex) who he worked with on the Save The Earth Foundation, "a non-profit corporation dedicated to the expansion of environmental awareness in our society" (http://www.savetheearth.org/). From Neal Pargman, the president and founder of Save the Earth: "Motivated by the awareness that the 'Have a Nice Day' smile face of the 60's could bring a positive element into our daily lives, I knew that environmental artwork together with a meaningful message could become a positive influence on our earth's future." Um, well ...
Ironically, in 2001, the Gores wrote a book together entitled Joined at the Heart: The Transformation of the American Family in which they wrote: "For us, as for most Americans, family is our bedrock, and we believe the strength of the American family is the nation's bedrock" (http://books.google.com/books?id=CGYrzt3xKV0C&printsec=frontcover&dq=Goree).
Al Gore has been a failure on a number of fronts but the seeming abandonment of his 40-year-marriage is one of the worst. The guy's become unhinged: just look at his eyes.

"So what is socialism? It is a sort of modern version of Louis XV’s “Après moi, le déluge” – an unsustainable Ponzi scheme in which elite overseers, for the duration of their own lives, enjoy power, influence, and gratuities by implementing a system that destroys the sort of wealth for others that they depend upon for themselves."

"What stops socialism?
I fear bankruptcy alone.
Who are socialists?
There are none. Only technocratic overseers who wish to give someone else’s money to others as a means of winning capitalist-style lifestyles and power for themselves — in a penultimate cycle of unsustainable spending. When this latest attempt at statism is over, Barack Obama will enjoy a sort of Clintonism, a globe-trotting post officium lifestyle of multimillion dollar honoraria to fund a lifestyle analogous to “two Americas” John Edwards, “earth in the balance” Al Gore, a tax-exempt yachting John Kerry, a revolving-door Citibank grandee like Peter Orszag, or a socialist Strauss-Kahn in $20,000 suits doling out billions to the “poor.”
That is just the way it has been and will always be."

Once the individual develops a dependency on food stamps, free medical care, subsidized housing, all sorts of disability or unemployment compensation, education credits, grants, and zero-interest loans — the entire American version of the European socialist breadbasket — then expectations for far more always keep rising, with a commensurate plethora of new justifications, usually in the realm of someone else having more than the recipient, always unjustly so. The endangered aid recipient is always seen as being pushed off a cliff in a wheel chair — therefore, “they” can afford to give “me” more; things are not “fair”; there is no “equality.”"

Failed solar plant to cost taxpayers $11M
CBC News Jun 24, 2011
http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/new-brunswick/story/2011/06/23/nb-umoe-solar-plant.html
The New Brunswick government will pay almost $11 million to cover a failed job creation plan negotiated between the former Liberal government and a Norwegian solar company, CBC News has learned. The provincial government will buy land and equipment from Norway's Umoe Solar that cancelled plans for a plant in Miramichi. Umoe Solar said in early 2009 it would take over the former UPM Kymmene paper mill site and build a solar cells plant, which would create 350 jobs in the economically hard-hit region. But in May 2010 Umoe Solar put the Miramichi project on hold.
Here’s another great article by Victor Davis Hanson at Pajamas Media: “There are No Socialists”, June 25, 2011:
“ . . . So what is socialism? It is a sort of modern version of Louis XV’s “Après moi, le déluge” – an unsustainable Ponzi scheme in which elite overseers, for the duration of their own lives, enjoy power, influence, and gratuities by implementing a system that destroys the sort of wealth for others that they depend upon for themselves.
“. . . Social Security started out as a few dollars a month to the elderly, in their last two or three years of life, to ensure that they could feed themselves without the indignity of borrowing from their children. It has morphed into someone living well for twenty years on far more money taken than was put in — or a young family with a dyslexic child on “disability” for life. To cut any for the latter would cause far more riot and mayhem than not to have given the former anything in the first place — despite the fact that the 21st century recipient was far less needy and got far more than the early 20th century recipient who needed more and got less.

Scientists under the banner of the IPCC are not satisfied that the climate situation is being resolved in a timely enough fashion so they are now discussing ways to "engineer" the planet. Who knew that when they were thwarted in their aims to restructure the world economies, they would morph into this?

batb: This is a wowee series.
This fits with the VDH essay.
Firstly, Note 2:
"(2) Body Snatcher, Pod, Snatcher State, all relate to the central metaphor of this series. The basic analogy reverts to Part 1, where we cited the film Invasion of the Body Snatchers. In the film, alien “Body Snatchers” produce giant legume Pods in hothouses and other hatcheries. The Pods grow into new Body Snatchers who replace living people while appearing to be identical to them. The new Body Snatchers then grow new Pods from which new Body Snatchers develop – until the whole population has been “snatched.”"
"From Meccania To Atlantis - Part 16: Exodus 1: Reality for Radicals"
"These days, one who would write about the unfolding meeting of the West with the Wall of Reality must choose every day whether to write on that day or take some action to protect his family from what he’d be writing about."
"Instead, governments are busy pulling off their own mega-swindles, such as promising too many costly entitlements to too many people and misspending enormous funds on social engineering at home and stupid pet causes abroad. Those funds are raised through confiscation from legitimate citizens via onerous taxation, borrowing in international Ponzi schemes, and diluting the currency through “quantitative easing.” The latter forfeits the government’s second needed function: to preserve the value of the currency it issues.
Throughout the West, Karl Marx is smiling even as gangster financial manipulators loot the world with impunity. It’s from each according to his ability, to each according to his need."

Tonight, around 11 p.m., a group of at least 60-70 African American youth marched down one of the side streets (W. Thrush) to the 4 lane main drag (Sheridan). They were yelling threats to white residents. Things such as we need to kill alll the white people around here. They were physically intimidating anyone calling for help from the police. They were surrounding cars. Cars on the main drag had to slam on their brakes to either avoid the youth blocking not only all four lanes, but a large section of the side street as well. fights were breaking out among them. They were rushing residents who looked out their doors, going on to porches, yelling threats to people calling the police for help.
