Anthony Dominick Benedetto was born in New York City on August 3, 1926. He fought in the latter stages of WW2 and then seriously pursued a singing career afterwards. In 1949 he was invited by Bob Hope to join him while performing out on the road. Hope suggested that Benedetto simplify his name to Tony Bennett. Soon after a star was born! Here's an interesting mix of his classic tunes.

Probably the most cringe-worthy moment of Obama's Presidency.

He didn't appear to be reading from a prepared speech, but I have no idea how you'd screw up MOH recipients.

1. File this one under "Now It All Makes Sense". A Missouri farming and ranching contact just got off a conference call wherein he was informed that the federal government is sending out letters to all of the flooded out farmers in the Missouri River flood plain and bottoms notifying them that the Army Corps of Engineers will offer to BUY THEIR LAND.

The Mind Numbed Robot sums up Obama's Presidency.

The Wall Street Journal has picked up the story as well...

Daniel is calling this a worst case scenario for Venezuela as it may elevate Chavez to mythical status in the country.

At least there's some good news in the world: New York state legalized gay marriage.

libertariansetc. - now why would a "libertarian" want the State to arrogate to itself the right to legitimize or not legitimize people's personal relationships one way or the other? To redefine, by fiat, an ancient social and religious institution, which is what NY State legislature has just done? Why would a "libertarian" feel more comfortable hiding behind daddy government's skirts (because he just likes dressing that way an his new husband likes it too)?

Your kneejerk reaction is illogical.

Robert.

Heh. It appears I am the only one on topic here tonight. Kate's blog is becoming increasingly...errr...well, off-topic.

I love Tony Bennet's smokey voice, and his claim-to-fame song just has to be San Francisco.

The music business appears to me at least to be a strange crap shoot. I recently watched a re-run of Good Fellas, De Niro and Peschi being two of my favorite actors.

In the movie, there was a segment of Jerry Vale singing.

The guy had it all...looks, voice, delivery of songs...everything. But he never quite made it to the "bigs".

Go figure.

There is an interesting video linked at the end of the "Obama's Legacy" post. It's called "The Most Amazing Golfer the World Has Never Seen". If you don't see it listed you would have to YouTube search for it. It's about a Canadian named Moe Norman whose feats on the course were apparently amazing.

It's about 6 mins long and is produced by a liquor company so there's some advertising at the end.

The ad is worth it. It's a recipe for a tasty summertime, patio type drink.

"A deadly car bomb has hit a hospital in Afghanistan's eastern Logar province, with women, children and elderly among the casualties.

The provincial health director told the BBC that 27 people had died and 53 were hurt, adding the toll could have been higher as many people took away the bodies of relatives...The BBC's Bilal Sarwary in Kabul says the Taliban always distances itself from attacks with large numbers of civilian casualties."

Especially when flattening hospitals. That's so out of character for them. It must be someone else with an .."agenda."

Gregor Robertson, Mayor of Vancouver, re riots: "I didn’t know any details":

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/national/british-columbia/bc-politics/i-didnt-know-any-details-vancouver-mayor-says-of-police-plan/article2075599/

You invite folks into the centre of your city, without having a clue how many would actually show up -- 150,000 to be specific -- with no idea what the police plan is going to be to control the crowd???

Gregor Robertson is a moron.

He needs to resign.

He won't resign, 'batb', and even worse, I suspect/fear that the pathetic people of Vancouver will re-elect him this November. :-(

Citizens deserve the politicians they get!

AGW: Goredom is Boredom.

"The plunge from the brink of victory to the pit of defeat must be as unpleasant as it is familiar to the winner of the 2000 popular vote; in his latest essay in Rolling Stone he gives his own best analysis of why he keeps losing."

...-

"The Failure of Al Gore: Part One

Walter Russell Mead

It must be as perplexing to his many admirers as it is frustrating to himself that a man of Vice President Gore’s many talents, great skills and strong beliefs is one of the most consistent losers in American politics.

“All political careers end in failure,” said Enoch Powell; Gore has not won an election on his own since his 1990 re-election to the Senate from Tennessee. His 1988 presidential bid ended well short of the nomination. Many observers felt Gore was headed for defeat in a third Senate campaign as the south continued to swing Republican; Clinton’s offer of the vice presidential slot in 1992 gave Gore the opportunity to reach a national audience as his home state cooled. On his own again in 2000, gifted by the departing Clinton with the most bubbliciously expanding economy in American history and a comfortable budget surplus, and insulated from the innuendo and scandal of the Clinton White House by his still-vibrant marriage, he found the elusive road to defeat against a flawed and inexperienced challenger. Tennessee voted for Bush; Florida or no Florida Gore would have gone to the White House if those who knew him longest and best had rallied to his support.

Once out of office, he assumed the leadership of the global green movement, steering that movement into a tsunami of defeat that, when the debris is finally cleared away, will loom as one of the greatest failures of civil society in all time.

Gore has the Midas touch in reverse; objects of great value (Nobel prizes, Oscars) turn dull and leaden at his touch."

@BM: I would vastly prefer the state not get involved with the business of marriage at all. As long as it does, it may not discriminate along the arbitrary lines of religious institutions.

Gregor Robertson is a moron.

Couldn't agree with you more, batb. Unfortunately, Robert is probably right about his getting re-elected.

This is why I moved to he suburbs 20 years ago.

Robert W. (Vancouver): "He won't resign, 'batb' ..."

And that's just the problem. The guy totally screws up, admits as much, and stays in power to enjoy all the perqs and privileges of the office without the due diligence and accountability that goes along with the office.

Kids see this kind of profligate irresponsibility with no commensurate accountability and figure it's OK for them to be irresponsible too and suffer no consequences.

Adults need to lead by example and they're not. They're letting themselves off the hook, they're letting the kids off the hook, and what we get is a poisonous and blatant flaunting of the law, with an inattentive mayor and Chief of Police who refuse to take responsibility for the mess.

Is anyone in charge?

Did Tony Bennett ever record "Them Bones, Them Bones (Gonna Walk Around)"? I always thought that he had a philosophical objection to that song. His name was Tony Bennett, but he would not accept a bony tenet...

"Is 'global cooling' happening?"

"If the temperature standstill does not change soon, we may have got it wrong on climate change - writes Dr David Whitehouse

Today, the world is warmer than it has been since we started making reasonably accurate measurements about 150 years ago. It has been warming since the Victorian times, off and on, with a few periods of no change. Over this time, it has become about 0.7 degrees C warmer. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change says that mankind's influence on our climate became apparent around 1960 - and that, since 1980, the global temperature has risen by 0.4 degrees C; mostly due to mankind.

While we do live in the warmest decade since proper measurements began our temperatures do not seem to be unprecedented."

Wretchard says:

"Too bad that the one world religion invented in the West — Communism or socialism — died in the east in 1989. And it looks to be collapsing of its own weight in the West too.

I cannot for the life of me imagine why people are so attracted to the idealism of Marxism, which seems to me redolent of the the aroma of boiled cabbage, unwashed overcoats, fleas and weak tea, in a word the atmosphere of left wing bookshops across the world. It is a terrible and dreary vision of a horrible and regimented life.

Probably it is because somebody has stuck the label “idealism” on it, and that like the cardboard crown on a stage king, it is good enough to fool the rubes."

Yeah, I wanna marry my identical twin sister - mainly for the tax breaks. Mohammed down the road wants to marry his cousin, who happens to be his third wife's daghter. Problem!? Nah.

I'm not trying to start a debate/flame war/anything that pisses Kate off; but we are talking about an expansion of government. You want to frame this as being about getting the government out of people's lives? Well it's not. It's about expanding the power of government to alter the most basic of social institutions. It's cute the way they've sold it to you as an anti-govt. thing, Mr. libertarianswatchthedailyshow.

To stave off the wrath of Kate, I will respond to nothing other than a genius-level observation, and you ain't got one.

And don't call me "BM". Or "Shirley".

All I have to say is pathetic. More "modern" science, or more likely science fantasy.
