Looking back through the first century of the motion picture business, are there any composers more prolific than John Williams and Irving Berlin? What a vast array of memorable music they provided us!
Update: Gord Tulk has filled in a big blank in my movie musical history knowledge with Elmer Bernstein. Megaera did the same with Jerry Goldsmith.

Easy answer:

(one of Dennis miller's favorites BTW Robert)
I got lost tonight in watching 'Saving Private Ryan' on the history channel.
I cannot even count the number of times I have watched this movie and yet, it still captivates me with a pause in thought for all those who had to take part. (Especially after one of my neighbors told me his personal story from that morning)
Tomorrow morning is June 6. At 6:30am I will be making coffee, not getting ready to jump off a boat into machine gun fire. All in part because a world had tried to pacify one socialist named Hitler.
Lest we forget and God bless those who made the sacrifice.
Jerry Goldsmith. Perhaps not as prolific as Berlin, but amazing scores.
I'll always associate Elmer with Ghostbusters...the non-Ray Parker Jr. stuff in the movie.
Also, Alan Silvestri...Predator, Back to The Future, this summer's Captain America.

"Statement by the Prime Minister of Canada on the anniversary of D-Day
June 5, 2011
Ottawa, Ontario
Prime Minister Stephen Harper today issued the following statement to
mark the 67th anniversary of D-Day:
“Tomorrow, we will remember and honour the bravery of the tens of
thousands of soldiers, sailors and air men and women who supported and
participated in the Normandy landings of June 6, 1944, leaving behind
their loved ones to defend the free world against tyranny and hatred.
“Their legacy endures, as we continue to live by the fundamental values
that Canadian troops gave their lives to uphold – freedom, democracy,
human rights and the rule of law.
“D-Day operations, which marked the beginning of the Battle of Normandy,
were executed by an alliance of nations – led by Canada, the U.S., Free
France, and the United Kingdom – collaborating and fighting together for
a common cause. On that day, they overcame incredible adversity to
establish the beachheads that led to the overthrow of an enemy so well
entrenched in northern France.
“Their successful mission to bring liberty to Europe would not have been
possible without the hard work of hundreds of thousands of other
Canadians who contributed to the war effort right here at home.
“As we pause to remember the price paid by our courageous military
personnel during D-Day and the Battle of Normandy, we will also pay
tribute to our men and women in uniform who continue to selflessly serve
Canada’s interests and help people around the world in countries such as
Afghanistan, Haiti and Sudan.
“On behalf of all Canadians, I wish to express our most sincere
gratitude to Canadian veterans, for a debt that can never be repaid.
Lest we forget.”"

United States:
"State, local layoffs to hit record levels"
"Don't look to state and local governments to prop up the job market.
To the contrary, this cash-strapped sector is set to go on a record-breaking layoff binge when the new fiscal year starts on July 1.
State and local governments are forecast to shed up to 110,000 jobs in the third quarter, the first time the blood-letting has risen into the triple digits, according to IHS Global Insight.
"We're on a downward path," said Greg Daco, principal U.S. economist at IHS. "It's not looking good."
State and local government employment has been a drag on the economy all year, averaging a loss of 23,000 jobs a month over the past three months. Meanwhile, the private sector has created an average of 180,000 a month during the same period.
In May, public employment shrunk by 29,000 jobs, mostly at the state and local level, while businesses created 83,000 jobs, the Labor Department reported Friday. All told, the sector has lost 510,000 positions since its peak in August 2008.
States still cutting
Though tax revenue is starting to rise, states are still wrestling with multi-billion-dollar budget gaps. Federal stimulus funds helped minimize job cuts until now, but that money essentially runs out on June 30.
So states are planning to slash funds for education, social services and local governments, as well as downsize their payrolls even more, in the coming fiscal year."

In 1994, as a young Canadian army captain in England, I had the honour of being assigned to attend the D Day 50th anniversary memorial service at Oxford University, which had been the location of the Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Forces Europe. It seems like yesterday to me now, but I suspect that the vast majority of the veterans of that great crusade that I had the honour of meeting then have passed to their reward. God bless therm all.

In today’s National Post, here’s a letter, by Alex Banks, Toronto, that I really appreciated:
“Re: Don’t Hide God From Children, Charles Lewis, June 3. As a committed atheist I want to thank Charles Lewis for this column. In high school I had the distinct pleasure of reading the Bible in both English and Latin. It is without a doubt one if the most important and beautiful books I have ever read.
“Studying the King James Bible not only gave me a greater understanding of the English language, but it also exposed me to ideas that challenged my (lack of) faith.
“In recent years, too many atheists have adopted the fanaticism of extreme religion that we used to deplore. A healthy society is one that acknowledges religion and discusses it openly. The Bible has had a profound historical effect on every aspect of our society. This means that understanding the world we live in requires first-hand knowledge of this important document.”
Someone named Steve MacDonald responded: “Very reasonable letter, and such a relief to hear such a civilized tone from a self-proclaimed atheist. When I was quite young I was one of those obnoxious and intellectually shallow atheists not unlike poor Mr. Hitchens. I recall going through a phase when I developed some respect and civility for what after all is the anchor and bedrock of our entire civilization. Ten or so [years of?] deep study of epistemology and related fields finally opened my eyes to absolute necessity of God's existence and benevolence.”
God bless Alex and Steve—and everyone here too!
I remember that Elmer Bernstein, Leonard's brother—as good looking too!—wrote the beautiful music for the movie, "To Kill a Mockingbird" (TKaM). (I’m just listening to his greatest hits: what a lot of iconic ones! Thanks for posting this.)
My grade school sister and I loved TKaM and we played the record until it was almost worn out.
What great music: SUCH a talented family. G_d bless Elmer Bernstein (and Leonard)!
Disappointing: in the medley, the haunting, main theme for TKaM was about 10 seconds long. Bummer!!
So, if you don't know the music for TKaM, check it out here:

Now the folks in TO think it is the city's responsibilty to help them with their racoon and other small animal problems?
When I had a family of squirels living in the rafters, I went to the SPCA, got a couple live traps, free of charge. Trapped the annoying little buggers. Dropped them off about 5km from the house and then patched the hole they used.
No more squirel problem.

Ruling out a merger with the NDP and too much influence by "middle age white guys," Alfred Apps seeks a complete renewal of the Liberal party and someone other than Bob Rae as permanent leader.
"But this policy re-thinking and party re-organization and rebuilding must not in any way be 'predetermined or pre-cooked by party insiders,' he says. In fact, he notes that Grits want a 'culture of change' that focuses on engaging more women and aboriginals, youth and new Canadians – 'and with very special and concerted attention to Quebec.'
That means getting rid of the '‘middle age white guys' like myself,' ”

Looks as though Apps STILL doesn't get why the Liberals were steamrolled.
atlantic jim - no, the 'folks in Toronto' don't consider that it's the city's responsibility to deal with the raccoons. It's the city that declares this - because, you aren't allowed to deal with them on your own.
You can't trap them - and if you call in a 'humane trapper' the law says that he must release them!!!...no more than 1 km away. Got that? One km away. No further. So, they simply walk back that 1 km and return.
As for raccoon-proofing your house and garden, that's impossible! How do you deal with them living in the trees, and eating all your plants? And I mean all of them: tulips, begonias, any and all vegetables and fruits.
Do you fence in your flowers? Some garden. Try to fence in your vegetables? They crawl under and over and through.
Garbage bins - they unlatch the lids. Roofs? They dig their way through; they don't wait for the loose shingles; they MAKE them loose.
The raccoon problem is very serious in Toronto; city urbanization has driven out their natural predators (coyotes, fox) and with the proliferation of homes and trees for shelter, garbage and gardens for food - they are like rabbits in Australia.
In the rural areas, raccoons are not a problem because their numbers are kept in check by their natural predators. Not in Toronto.
Therefore, since the city forbids, by its '1 km trapping rule' any real management of raccoons, it ought to step in and allow measures to deal with them.
ET, your second last sentence on your 2:37 is right. Ralph Klein's method works great.
I would suggest that the racoons in Toronto are smarter in many ways than than the city administrators who concocted the nonsense.
