“…we found that both kinds of debt had positive effects for young people. It didn’t matter the type of debt, it increased their self-esteem and sense of mastery.”

They'd be better off getting their self-esteem and sense of mastery by playing video games.

Sounds like marxist talking points, or is that democrat? Same thing I guess.

This is nothing. The latest DemocRat trial baloon is the Republicans deliberately saotaged the economy.

Savings bad, debt good, sounds like ANOTHER liberal idiot using Orwell's 1984 as a manual. We SO need to defeat these people.

Loved this bit:

"This is a correlation…not causality. And because I know the difference I won’t conclude that journalism degrees cause people to misinterpret science but only that the two tend to go together."

By the same token we should encourage young people to play
a lot of Russian roulette. The survivors will have such a sens of
self-mastery, and of having Lady Luck on their sides.

It would probably be a good idea no longer to speak of
"borrowing" money. My stepson may borrow a hammer or a saw
from me, or not; I rent money from a bank; or, more
accurately, my bank rents money from me. The
psychology of the expressions is different; rents must be paid.

I think (but I can't find the quote) that Joe Biden said in 2008 "we need to spend more to get out of debt".

It's very easy to see, if you are looking, that the Progressive Left is an international effort that crosses boarders. I've heard numerous politicians, unionistas and experts parroting the exact same sentiments whether in Canada, Europe or the USA. This is very troubling, and we must be alert to it to combat it.JMO

One-Sentence Summary: "A career sociologist has to justify her own salary."

You're welcome, I just saved you ten minutes.

...my bank rents money from me.

And charges you to do it.

Someone doesn't know what positive means.

"The study was supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation."

Well, then, we've got a buttload of self-esteem right here in Canada, with personal bankruptcies at record levels!

Bwahahahahhahahaha....Am I the only debt-free dude in the world??? House paid off, RV paid off, two 2010 vehicles paid off,not one penny in credit card debt,no bank loans.
Oh. And I worked my butt off to get that way,but I guess that is lost on the entitled age. I am not only going to spend my grandkids inheiratance, but my great-great grandkids too. suck it up, socialist losers. And my powder is dry to protect my property and rights.

Well @Justthinkin - you are not a farmer then are you! Raise you 1 JD Swather for your 2 SUVs.

LS from SK...no...I am not a farmer. And I have absolutley nothing against farmers. Thank God you guys are providing our food. And they are not SUV's. I wouldn't buy those pieces of crap. One nice sturdy 3/4 ton Ram and one little 4 banger. Point being, why do sheeples go so far in debt?
And I really do hope you got your crop in.

A young co-worker of mine was talking about wanting to buy a house with minimum down payment.
I commented that I thought it was not a very good time to be considering getting into heavy debt.
His reply......."I don't consider a mortgage a debt".
Huh?

Am I the only debt-free dude in the world??? ~Justthinkin
