I caught bits and pieces on Sirius radio today. So, when I finally got to a computer, it was the first thing I looked for.
We're doing well down here in Idaho so far, lots of wins, and a good time visiting with dog show friends. I'm off to California next weekend, and my net access will be limited, but I hope to do some posting when I can.
What's creepy is that Stewart truely does believe that he is unbiased - or, somehow, biased in some "it's okay 'cause I'm primarily a comedian except when I'm not" way. Does this make sense? Can anyone explain it to me?
Or is his argument that he's unbiased because he agrees with himself?
I was hoping he would ask Stewart, "If Fox News was to add jokes into all their news but kept the exact same content otherwise, would he be okay with them then?" That's essentially what Stewart does. He's a rabidly partisan news commentator for the liberal side but disguises it as comedy. He pretends because it is comedy that it has no impact on anything in the real world which is totally wrong. Stewart in nothing more than a left wing version of Glen Beck with jokes written into his commentary.
Breitbart is better at confrontation - because he asks for specifics - eg - "You say Fox is biased? Give me specific examples. Now. You must have evidence, right? Tell me." That's the only tactic that works.
That was not the interview I was expecting. Stewart was far better than Wallace. He let Stewart explain away his bias as well as the main stream media bias as something other than what it was. Wallace did not seem prepared for this tactic.
"He let Stewart explain away his bias as well as the main stream media bias as something other than what it was."
Well, it seems to me you have to give people you interview latitude to explain themselves. The question in this particular interview is whether anybody bought what Jon Stewart was selling. I think Stewart looked silly and wasn't fooling anyone.
Too true ivbinconned! For a guy who is only a comedian, he sure spouted his liberal views and bias against Fox. I guess he only appeared on Fox to boost his ratings.
That wasn't a "vs". It was two guys exchanging views. No real argument or conflict, just mild disagreement and what appears to be a genuine desire for understanding on both sides. It'd be nice if more political discourse took this format.
I have ZERO DOUBT that Stewart believes the sincerity of his B.S. He's no different than any limousine liberal I've ever met. They ALL believe that their views are correct, righteous, and mainstream. They have been living in the Leftist Bubble sooooooooooooo long that they've grown absolutely blind to anyone else's views.
BTW - and then I'll shut up and turn out the light, I promise - notice how freaked Stewart gets when Wallace plays him back his impression of Herman Cain from The Daily Show. Jokey Black guy accent and something about "I don't like readin'!". I won't even bother with the old "can you imagine if Glenn Beck or somebody..." thing; it's not even worth it. They call us racists, not vice versa.
Stewart did more circle-talking than Anthony Weiner did. Stewart also looks like he could be Anthony Weiner's better looking brother. SLIGHTLY better looking....
Can't stand the a-hole. And the fact that most 20-somethings seem to get their news from guys like Stewart explains a lot, doesn't it....
I hope Chris Wallace was just being polite by inviting Stewart to come back. It will probably take a week for Fox to clean out the vile Stewart left behind after leaving today.
There was actually a study of how informed viewers are and Fox was basically the same as everyone else. O'Reilly and Limbaugh viewers were the same as Stewart's, which would have been good to bring up if Wallace himself was informed enough to use Google.
Wallace could also have asked Stewart if he was informed that Cat Stevens, aka Yusuf Islam, avidly supported the Rushdie fatwa before booking him to close this Washington march with Peace Train.
I've never found Jon Stewart funny so I tend to stay away from his show. In my opinion, if you know the greater context of the events and topics he comments on (especially from a Conservative standpoint) then many of his jokes don't hold up. They only work if you're liberal or you don't follow politics as much as the rest of us.
His "Fox News bias = bad, my bias (and CNN, NBC, ABC, WP, NYT) = ok" attitude is hypocritical. I've got no problem with him having this attitude because we are not his target audience. I also have no problem with him hiding his political commentary behind comedy. It gives him an excuse to fall back on when he's confronted about his biases and it makes him a lot of money.
What I DO have a problem with were the "serious" reporters and media personalities at the other networks praising him during his Rally to Restore Sanity, saying he was a good example for reporters and politicians to follow, and a true voice of moderation. It seems that they, along with a lot of liberals, don't realize that he's a comedian first, commentator second as he likes to imply.
I hate Stewart, I think he is a pretentious, condescending asshole. But Chris let him belittle Fox viewers like always, this time on Fox! Chris was way too easy on him, especially when Stewart went all shrieky over the Cain gag. And Chris gave him a total free pass on Fox viewers being misinformed. They are misinformed because Stewart and his ilk disagree with them.
And notice how hard it was for Stewart to criticize Obama. That alone made it worth watching that creep. No bias there.
I actually enjoy watching the Daily Show, much more than the simplistic Colbert,he is just offensive.Though,I do watch Stewart with a grain of salt or a whole lick close by .
The expression " can't see the forest because of the trees" came to mind while watching this interview. Stewart does have a liberal bias, personal and professional,of that there is no question.
The 'misinformed' jab at Fox viewers should have been challenged.
I feel that the two biggest ongoing news stories in the past 5 years have been Obama's rise to presidency, and the global warming/climate/doomsday farce. Fox news was the ONLY network that presented a different view of these two 'events'. That should have been pointed out to Stewart.
All in all ,an enjoyable half-hour. My highlight was when Stewart acknowledged that the liberal side throws out hate, such as "racist and homophobe",with ease.
However, his most frequent rejoinder during this interview was "I disagree" -- not a very powerful defence of his own positions.
He also shifts his ground a great deal. At one point he defended statements he's made on his show and positions that he's taken by saying that he's "not only a comedian." A little later he referred to himself as "just a comedian."
This is the "dodge" that Chris Wallace referred to at the outset of the interview and which Stewart so strongly denied. I suspect that Stewart is having a lot of fun playing both sides, but it doesn't help his credibility. At least that's my take.
I think Stewart is sincere in as much as he believes he is open-minded. The 19 out of 20 shots at conservatives vs lieberal is just a function of his nature. You could tell by his nervous joking and apprehensiveness that he was truly waiting to be blind sided or punked, which would have been expected had this been a Comedy Network show. For him the true giant step was acknowledging that leftoids are too easy with the racist/bigot/homophobe labeling.
For the record, I don't think he is funny, nor is Colbert.
" I wonder how Mark Twain would make out in todays world?"
Given that Twain likely had 20 or 30 IQ points on Stewart, I would say he wouldn't do too bad. Liberals like to think Twain was one of them because he was against slavery, but that is just based on liberals belief that all conservatives must be racist. Other than that, I can't find a lot of support for this strange notion, having read a lot of what the man wrote, including his autobiography.
Jon Stewart becomes more a Liberal liablity the longer his kind make up for Obamas gaffes.
All these Entitled elites are becoming human sacrificies for the Child King.
Stewart's argument was easily thwarted yet Wallace was impotent.
Stewart's argument was basically: we are affected by our personal bias in our reporting, but there is no concerted effort to be bias. Everyone is doing their best job to report the despite their human limitations. Fox news on the other hand deliberately skews the reporting to fit a conservative narrative. In other words, the bias is an intentional, and executed in a well thought-out game plan under the guise of straight news; hence, EVIL.
IMO John Stewart is the most articulate and witty voice the Left media has today. He often thumps Bill O’Reilly in head-to-heads during friendly banter which is no easy task as BO’R is very intelligent and a strong debater. I’m not sure that Wallace has the tools to deal with John Stewart’s unorthodox style, and Wallace shouldn’t have allowed JS to conflate two separate issues(ABC, NBC news standards & Comedy Central News standards). Wallace allowed Stewart to use the Comedy Central excuse for a blanket retort.
IMO the sharpest knife in Fox News’ drawer is Megan Kelly when it comes to debate and a strong interview. She’s often thumped BO’R on his own show, and I feel the heir apparent to the Fox News throne when BO’R moves on.
Stewart defends himself by saying that his comedy may be "informed by an ideological background" but that he is a comedian first. I'm sure he is sincere in his statement that he is not an ideologue. He seems genuinely unaware that comedy is not his goal but that it is just his method.
Stewart (clearly angry) says that Fox viewers are "the most consistently misinformed viewers" poll after poll shows. That may be true but what are they misinformed about? What facts don't they know? Stewart doesn't seem to grasp that Fox viewers simply do not share the Liberal's notion of "facts".
But why don't they tune in other networks? It is because the values that "inform" the broadcasts of the other networks run contrary the viewer's values.
There is no such thing as an unbiased reporter. The minute that a reporter says that something is more newsworthy than something else we have a value judgement. This is bias. I have no quarrel with bias but I do have a quarrel with falsehoods. This is my complaint about the liberal media (which include the likes of Stewart: they will just make things up if it suits their purposes. When they do this they change from being reporters to mere propagandists.
Jon Stewart delivers propaganda masquerading as comedy and in that way he is just another phoney: an ideological con man. I don't care for the man.
Stewart defends himself by saying that his comedy may be "informed by an ideological background" but that he is a comedian first.

That's a kind of ET-like distinction without a difference (Obama isn't a socialist, but a psychological socialist! -- this to avoid admitting a mistake, a form of denial).
Further to Black Mamba's comments, I loved Crowder's remark about Jon Stewart's use of funny faces to tell us when to laugh.
As others have suggested, the thing to get is that he really, really, really believes in his heart and soul that he is unbiased. I have a friend who always angrily spits out "fair and balanced Faux News". No amount of research confirming the pronounced liberal bias of MSM or the more fair coverage of Fox News has any effect.
This is certainly not the first time I anxiously tuned into a video clip in which the conservative allegedy ate the liberal ... but didn't.
I like Jon Stewart in the same way I like Bill Clinton, hating myself for doing so!

I recall an episode of Bill O'Reilly where Bill ran an edited clip of his interview on Bill Mahr's show. On "The Factor" Bill came off very witty with the right editing. When I saw the interview in full on "Real Time" Bill wasn't nearly so alpha as he'd make you believe. It's par for the course, both sides do it.
Kathy Shaidle has often mocked the Right for being so "thick" when it comes to many, many things. Especially pop culture related, as Wallace demonstrated with his distaste for very good shows like South Park. If conservatives could only grasp how out of touch they are with main stream Americans/Canadians on most things NOT fiscal or political, they could potentially kill the Progressive Left who has an iron grip on EVERYTHING else. Sometimes it’s the non-important things that make the difference. I doubt John McCain would have Jay-Z and Beyonce at the big par-tay. Actually, I shudder to think who the entertainment would have been.
Indy - the funny thing is that South Park tends libertarian if not exactly conservative almost always. Parker and Stone could and might tear Stewart to pieces - honestly, I wonder if that's why he was praising them so vehemently.
Perhaps he's disingenuous. BTW, I find many folks I disagree with (John Stewart) very, very, very funny. Funnier than those I agree with, but I digress. I don’t think it’s a stretch that JS enjoys though disagrees with Matt & Trey. Also, someone like JS suffers from the same bigotry as the rest of the Left, and is likely more concerned about not being associated with us, than being correct on any particular political issue. Honestly, I can’t blame them, as I often wonder wtf I’m doing hanging with many of the Right-wing maroons that will see us spent into oblivion through their own entitlements. It’s difficult to argue for “conservatism” when the large voting blocs (old folks) are voting CPC and GOP while trying to preserve their entitlements. As conservatives, our political machines have been usurped by Boomers(who used to vote Liberal/Democrat) who wish to preserve their own entitlements by telling the rest of us “cut back”. In the end, I fear it will be us(me, you, and the 20 something’s) verses them(boomers and older) as this is where the political playing field has led us. So, if they’re “conservative” then what’s that make us? I feel like I’m living in a slow motion version of the Egyptian revolution(2011) where the folks, in hopes of more democracy, end-up turning to those that would offer less democracy; but, in our case, we will turn to the far Left as we’ve been already betrayed by the Right.
Would you agree that the largest hurdle for the conservative movement is shedding the reputation (deserved in many cases) of being "out of touch" with mainstream society?
I'm a bit conflicted. I like Stewart (can't stand Colbert - he's just annoying) but I think he doesn't realize how biased he is. And how in the name of all that's holy does Wallace let him get away with saying "I'm not an activist" - what the h*ll was that march on Washington if not activism?!
I think Wallace was polite and restrained, because, as I said, even though I like Stewart, I would have jumped on a half a dozen things he said. That the MSM isn't biased, just "lazy"? Really? The guy who ended up selling the John Edwards story to the National Enquirer first tried to get it on the MSM, but they weren't interested. The vile rumours reported about Sarah Palin (Trig's not her baby; she was pregnant, not her daughter, etc.) while Obama's relationships with outright racists and terrorists get passing mention at best.
My final beef was the Herman Cain piece; I'm no fan of Cain, either, but I wish Wallace's team had prepared a counter-piece showing Obama's futile golf swing with the same Amos 'n Andy voiceover "This ball's too d*mn small. How I'm supposed to hit this small ball? They should play this with basketballs. Basketballs are big. They would be easy to hit. I'm Barack Obama and I like big balls!", and then ask Stewart how many milliseconds this would have to air on Fox before every MSM organ in the country would be charging them with racism.
Last comment: I'm with you, Indy. South Park is one of the funniest things on TV. Did you know Parker and Stone have the best-selling play on Broadway currently? It's a spoof of Mormonism called "The Book of God".
It's already happening, all over the place, on both the right and the left. Look at how many unions are agreeing to contracts that grandfather in high wages, pensions, and benefits for existing employees, while new hires get diddly. You'll see more clawbacks on all kinds of government benefits in years to come, but there will be a convenient cut-off age (say 70) so that most of the boomers won't be affected. When Tom Wolfe dubbed them "The Me Generation", he wasn't just blowing smoke.
Stewart came across as intelligent, and I'm sure he is, as he correctly stated, being a comedian is harder than a news handler. As well Wallace seemed like a homeboy with his grin and ill fitting suit jacket that made his shirt cuffs seem too long.
As well when Stewart kept trying to make a point and Wallace kept moving the goal posts.
I am however, surprized he was allowed so much freedom to bash Fox viewers. It is one thing to bash Fox as an organization, but to bash the viewers is a different ballgame.
Wallace should have rebutted because in the end, those are the ones who sign his cheque.
I don't know who the handlers were, but they should have done their homework too. Stewart was right, MSM, including Fox is lazy.
Me, for a statement I would have counted the times Sarah Palin was bashed and lied about on his show vs say H.Clinton or the First Lady.
Conservatives have been around a long time, and the loose liberal mindset has only been around 40 years, aka the 70's, another point Wallace missed.
So, in the end, Fox viewers got mud shoved in their face by Stewart, saw nothing in rebuttal, and this didn't solve anything. Or in my layman lawyer terms - being silent is the same as being in agreement.
On the other side I don't consider SouthPark as great as some. It was funny but like other things, its time has passed.
There are lines and boundaries we shouldn't cross as a society and this supposed comedy gets old very fast in doing so.
Another point Wallace missed. SouthPark exists because of shock mentality - the very thing Stewart accused 24/7 news like Fox for.
As well another counter point Wallace missed - Stewart said 24/7 news is because of 9/11, but 24/7 has been around a long time - aka Ted Turner back in 1984.
No mention of Dan Rather's major goof up either was interesting.
Now if FoxNews had said they wanted him on because they appreciate a good counterpoint and debate, I'd believe this interview better.
Heck even if the president of Fox came down and shook Stewart's hand that would have spoke volumes and good PR from Fox's side.

Stewart got absolutely scorched in this interview. No two ways about it. Go Chris!
The main stream media may definitely have a liberal bias. But they are not very good at it...thus the ratings.
Pinned him in a corner didn't he.

A satirist. Which is a great western tradition. I wonder how Mark Twain would make out in todays world?
I hope to see more of Jon Stewart on Fox! Thanks for that
Remember as well that this is the man who recently told Steven Crowder 'We never book conservative pundits'...
...and then put pressure (successfully) on his manager to drop him as a client in revenge for making this public.
"the conservative movement that has risen up over the last 40 years"???
Another example of a leftist getting it absolutely and completely as backwards.
What else can you expect from an ideology who's fundamental basis is anti conservatism.
Watching that made me think about SUN NEWS TV and how Ezra Levant is working out to be a goodly mix of Chris Wallace and a bit of Jon Stewart combo.
Kate, enjoy (private) Idaho and wishing you luck at the dog show.
Solid interview. I think Steward solidly stated his position. Wallace let him talk, mostly, without interruption.
Good questions. Full answers. We all know Steward is a Liberal that feels that the 24hr media is a corrupting force looking for conflict.
End of interview.
Not sure why this is a big deal. Should we Conservatives roast anyone that disagrees with us? Don't we rail against the Liberals for this very thing?
Come on... if Steward is a threat to our world then we need to recalibrate.
I've never found Jon Stewart funny so I tend to stay away from his show.

Mamba
Chris Wallace is far too nice. He let Stewart run off at the mouth far too much.

Steward won.
So, Stewart won this one, sadly.
