In an interview with Walter Williams, he describes what must change in order for Black Americans to move forward. Here’s a snippet:
During Reconstruction and up until the 1940s, 75% to 85% of black children lived in two-parent families. Today, more than 70% of black children are born to single women. “The welfare state has done to black Americans what slavery couldn’t do, what Jim Crow couldn’t do, what the harshest racism couldn’t do,” Mr. Williams says. “And that is to destroy the black family.”
Same thing with First Nations people in Canada. Jack Layton and Pierre Trudeau want to destroy the Aboriginal culture and family.
Black men and black men alone should be held accountable for the decline of the black family.
All the rest is window dressing.
And in Canada we have destroyed the Indians.
Welfare: the destroyer of self-reliance, pride, self-esteem, common sense, social integrity and prosperity.
There are a number of causes, I think. And I disagree with kursk with his reductionist causality of ‘the black man’ which provides no explanation other than the strange causal one of colour of skin.
A basic cause was the role of the unions, which removed low skilled jobs from the black community, by union demands on industrial employment. This forced this type of industry off shore – India, China, etc.
The type of employment available for this sector of the population became the criminal one: primarily based around drugs.
A key factor of both lowskill and criminal employment is that you can enter it an an early age; there is no need to put off income earning, as so many do in ‘white’ or ‘asian’ groups until you are in the late 20s or 30s. This is an important issue.
To offset the loss of lowskill jobs, the welfare state moved in to support the unskilled, lowskilled segment of the population. This meant that you could live without work; in fact, you were financially better off not working.
Then, the welfare state actually financially rewarded single women for the number of children they had. This meant that rather than getting an education – which took years and cost money – you could live, now, just by having children. AND, being without a male partner.
I’d suggest looking at these unforeseen results of various policies.
Bill Cosby has talked about this before.
Cosby challenged poor blacks by charging, “The lower economic people are not holding up their end in this deal. These people are not parenting. They are buying things for kids—$500 for sneakers for what? And won’t spend $200 for ‘Hooked on Phonics.’” He ridiculed the poor English of the black ghetto: “They’re standing on the corner and they can’t speak English. I can’t even talk the way these people talk: ‘Why you ain’t,’ ‘Where you is.’ . . . And I blamed the kids until I heard the mother talk. And then I heard the father talk. . . . Everybody knows it’s important to speak English except these knuckleheads. . . . You can’t be a doctor with that kind of crap coming out of your mouth!” He suggested that African American criminals were being incarcerated not because of racism but because of crimes: “These are not political criminals. These are people going around stealing Coca-Cola. People getting shot in the back of the head over a piece of pound cake and then we run out and we are outraged, [saying] ‘The cops shouldn’t have shot him.’ What the hell was he doing with the pound cake in his hand?”

Probably, and unfortunate if viewed that way, the intention was to desensitize the hypocritical label thrown so frequently by the left at conservative thought and politics. It was meant as a reminder that it is the left that holds much closer ideological views of the real Nazi’s and in fact puts some of those views to practice when it comes to black people i.e. eugenics & stealth segregation.
Further to this, why do some non-whites succeed?
Asians, for example, statistically do better academically.

In the late 1960’s Saskatchewan Liberal Premier Ross Thatcher wanted to move the aboriginal people in Northern Saskatchewan off of welfare and into productive self reliance. 35 years later NDP Premier Lorne Calvert oversaw the closing of the Prince Albert Pulp Mill.

For some reason, the AGW, the unbearable burden of the Liberal MP from Scarborough-Agincourt, Ont. , Keeping Up with the Kardashians , Paris Hilton (who ever he is) declares victory in Iraq, Jamie Lynn (who ever she is) believed she couldn’t get pregnant, and other such important things are important and that’s that. This is a laboratory case, where one can say, and support the argument, that the politicians, the do-gooders and other assorted warm and fuzzy idiots destroyed once self-reliant culture with intrinsic self worth that is the human existence and utterly destroyed the human spirit in a whole segment of population.
Sad part is that it will take a generation, if it started today, to recover even fraction of the population from this state. Though it seem that there is no one to start the process. On a similar note, if anyone’s interested, starting yesterday, the National Post is running a week-long series on the demise of personal responsibiity. In Sat’s edition, Conrad Black describes the rise of the nanny state.
He includes this quote (not his):

If you accept that humanity is basically very lazy you can appreciate this trait can be our greatest strength or weakness depending under which political system you live.
Race has very little to do with it. If you are taking more from society than you put in then ultimately your society will implode. People point at blacks, Indians and eastIndians and think they are the problem. Whether the issue is cultural or not I can find whites in all parts of Canada who are no better.
A bigger fraud is the moral compass that many feel will ‘right the ship’ in Canada. I would suggest that there is no moral compass and hasn’t been for at least 40 years. Morals won’t return until the significance of ‘treating your neighbour as you would be treated’ reasserts itself.
Schools again: it’s not spoken aloud, but the behaviour of a critical mass of black students is rebellious, aggressive, rude, and entitled. Most of these students do not have their father in the home. It seems that discipline and supervision are lax: many of the mothers are aggressive and unintelligent, and will push back hard if their kids are disciplined. Official response? Don’t discipline these students.
Then the lie that “It’s not their fault, so we can’t hold them accountable” is actually embedded in special education—where a lot of these kids end up—protocols. E.g., If black troublemakers are in special education programs, it’s not their fault and so the principal has “discretion” to waive the set consequences. So, the consequences are usually waived, on political grounds—so as not to rile the kids or their irresponsible parents. How is that helpful to anyone?
I taught a lot of these kids: I really cared about them and worked very hard to accommodate their needs and strengths. We got along very well. I stayed away from the office, set high standards, guided my students to achieve them, and gave consequences for non-compliance. Guess what? These students behaved and improved academically: their self-esteem improved too—they EARNED it. Without a firm hand, it was easy for these kids, who lacked a lot of self-discipline, to focus on success. Letting them off the hook is absolutely the worst thing one can do: not holding these kids to account shows a huge lack of respect for their integrity as human beings. As far as I’m concerned, by not disciplining these students (and, yes, the Charter’s a huge spanner in the works here), the educational establishment victimizes these kids twice: they arrive at school undisciplined and not ready to learn, and are then abandoned again—by the very adults who are charged, by law, to look out for their best interests. What’s happening here is an utter travesty. These kids and the rest of us deserve far better.

That was when the SOCUS created the “right to privacy” out of thin air (funny that the same “right” doesn’t apply to the inhalation of burned plant vapours, but I digress..) in the execrable Roe v Wade decision. As a result, many young women choose the abortion alternative, or, as we used to say, they kill their children.

Since I understand you’re numerically challenged, Alex, let me help you here – 134/48 = 2.8. That is, black girls under 19 become pregnant at nearly 3 times the rate of white girls. Most people with an understanding of basic statistics look at that number as evidence of a very real and qualitative difference, not as a product of chance.

It breaks my heart and royally p1sses me off that the powers that be are abandoning these black kids and the rest of us on the altar of expediency. (Principals make about $116 000—and more. What the superintendents and directors make—for NOT doing one of their most important jobs—is ludicrous.) The price we’re all going to pay for this—and I don’t mean just the obscene amount of taxpayer dollars—will be astronomical.
I’ve just come home from church. So, another thought from me: in the West, nearly all families, including black families, used to be overwhelmingly Christian. They understood the idea of legitimate AUTHORITY, the truth of right and wrong, and the importance of self-discipline and hard work.

Why bother if there’s no shame—yeah, along with Christianity, that’s gone out the window too—I’ll get by via affirmative action promotions, and someone else will pay the bills?
The destruction of the family is at the heart of the Marxist plot: once the family—the best teacher of discipline, self-reliance, independence, LOVE, and FIDELITY—is done away with, the state can take over the sheeple. (This brings to mind the beautiful parable of Jesus going back to find the one lost sheep out of 100: He understands how weak and sheep-like we humans are. Without a loving shepherd, like our parents, who is willing to sacrifice him/herself for the good of the sheep—the state WILL sacrifice the sheep for its own good!—individuals are extremely vulnerable to the predations of the wolf.)
All of us are suffering as a result of the Me-Me-Me dogmas that have replaced the Judeo-Christian “Love thy neighbour as thyself” commandment. In North America, blacks and black families have suffered even more than whites and white families. We all need to wake up and smarten up, but the “I Am My Own God” philosophy and the state is my place of worship mindset are not likely to either waken or smarten us up.

We live in a culture where the man and father are viewed as disposable. A walking wallet and nothing more. Those women are the ones who decide who they have sex with, those women are the ones who decide whether or not a father stays in the life of his child, whether he wants to be a part of it or not. Those young men have no male role models to look up to (meaning their fathers) because his role was deemed useless. You want to know should be held accountable? IMO, the crux of the matter here is MARRIAGE: as the secular West has devalued this institution in favour of easy sex, feminism (as in men are second class and expendable), abortion on demand, easy divorce, common-law as equal to marriage, surrogate parenthood, and homosexual “marriage”—lawful polygamy comes next, folks!—our children are further and further removed from the possibility of living with their own parents. And, how old fashioned of me, I believe kids really need BOTH parents. The kind of feminism, which shoved men aside and aggrandized women, has done a huge amount of harm. But not having a foundation—it used to be Judeo-Christian morality—from which to fight this insidiousness, society just caved.
Traditional marriage demands a whole skill set—going more than 50-50, patience, perseverance, trust, fidelity, not always putting one’s own wishes first, etc.—that no longer resonates with the Me Generation. The tried and true rules around sex and marriage have been tossed out—and our kids are really suffering because of the selfish desires of their parents, who are now given carte blanche—sanctioned by our “evolving” laws and the “no shame”, laissez faire attitudes of society—to do whatever they damn well please: “Sorry kids, it’s about US, not you.” (Saying this out loud is considered very bad form.) Our poor children.
Nonsense. Given that well over a quarter of marriages end in divorce, marriage is clearly overrated as a familial bond. Of course, you COULD propose that divorce be made illegal, but a child in a single-parent household is infinitely better off than a child stuck in an abusive household where the parents only stay together because they can’t get divorced.
Of course, your rant against common-law and gay marriage betrays your true motives; you’re opposed to any arrangements which don’t meet with the hardline christian definition of “marriage” and base your opposition on religious grounds. You only use statistics to prop up your argument where applicable, and ignore them the rest of the time. It’s worth pointing out that Muslim nations have some of the lowest divorce and single-parent rates in the world, yet hardly turn out our idea of ideal children.

Wrong back at you.
What part of you is the “Libertarian” in your moniker? No individual responsibility and wanting government to solve all your problems? Obviously the War on Drugs has failed, and there are more drugs and addicts per capita than at another time in American history. There needs to be a cultural change to stop drug addiction and it begins with stopping the easy acceptance of drugs by the mainstream that finances the profits at the consumer level.
The left doesn’t want this, because at the core they are generally the users. They want their drugs on one hand and want to disarm the public on another. It’s purely selfish and hypocritical when you want your freedoms but deny others theirs. Through the funding of the drug trade the millions of drug using yuppies in society keep the drug wars and ghetto’s open for business.
I’m not an authoritarian, I could be somewhat labelled as a Libertarian, constitutionalist, conservative. Saying that the government is responsible and not the individual for cultural irresponsibility’s is a defeatist and dependant attitude.

We in the West have lost our vision which, for the past 2000 years, has been based on our (Judeo-)Christian faith. Marriage and the nuclear (not the whatever-)family have always been central to our communal life, which emphasized the safety, health, and well-being of each individual and, therefore, the collective good.
As you say, lookout, and as I’ve said many times, “love your neighbour as yourself,” as the basic tenet by which we govern our lives, has been a stalwart pillar of our civilization and our civility — and more, our charity — towards one another. Now that that’s gone by the wayside, courtesy of our no-God, socialist zeitgeist, we’re in very great trouble.
