Y2Kyoto: The Gore Effect

Now is the time at SDA when we can only stand in awe....

New York Times, Feb.27th - It would be an enormous relief if the recent attacks on the science of global warming actually indicated that we do not face an unimaginable calamity requiring large-scale, preventive measures to protect human civilization as we know it.

New York City, Feb.27th - A winter storm that pummeled New York City for two days broke a monthly record for snowfall in Central Park that stood for 114 years, according to the National Weather Service.

While I identify myself as a climate skeptic through and through, this is a misinformed jab at AGW. If we assume that they truly are correct that the world has warmed substantially, we would then also assume that the amount precipitation would increase correspondingly, no?

Where are the wettest places in the world that you can think of? Jungles? Tropical regions (i.e. hot places with lots of standing water?).

Like I said though, I am a skeptic, and as a result, I just chalk this up to the variability of weather. Breaking "records" really means nothing without a solid long term trend. In the same way that I refuse to accept the idea that having a few "hottest years on record" constitutes a long term warming trend caused by humanity, I also refuse to accept that a few cold years would be equally significant without more data and long term trends.

It would be an enormous relief if the recent attacks on the science of global warming actually indicated that we do not face an unimaginable calamity requiring large-scale, preventive measures to protect human civilization as we know it.
Al Gore

He's right.
The recent attacks on the science of global warming really haven't indicated that we do not face an unimaginable calamity requiring large-scale, preventive measures to protect human civilization as we know it.

It's just that the large scale preventative measures we need to protect human civilization as we know it are to scrap the IPCC, repeal all the global warming based legislation, and throw all the charlatans, Al Gore included, in jail.

Stand in awe and look on aghast at the tragic results of the great ponzi scheme.

"The Telegraph UK reports on one of the under-reported dangers of believing in man-made global warming:

Francisco Lotero, 56, and Miriam Coletti, 23, shot their daughter and her toddler brother before killing themselves."

http://www.climategate.com/global-warming-fear-moves-family-to-suicide

Their son Francisco, two, died instantly after being hit in the back.

However, their unnamed daughter cheated death after the bullet from her father’s handgun missed her vital organs….

And why would any parents want to kill themselves and their little baby? Al Gore and company had scared them to the point that life was no longer worth living.

Her parents said they feared the effects of global warming in a suicide note discovered by police.

The baby is better off without them."

There's nothing wrong with healthy skepticism. Even irrational skepticism. But this line of argument you've taken ( climate=weather) discredits your position and makes skeptics look dumb.

Where are the wettest places in the world that you can think of?
~barjebus

The Pacific Ocean, the Atlantic Ocean, the Arctic Ocean, the Antarctic Oean.

You are a concern troll pretending to be a skeptic.
A true skeptic wouldn't consider the AGW position at all because there is not a shred of evidence that AGW exists.

A true skeptic would represent the position of the status quo that existed before the AGW scam was promoted.

The skeptic doesn't need to prove anything and doesn't assume anything.
It's the AGW theory that requires proof and they not only do not have a case, the case they have presented is rife with fraud.

p.s. Phil Jones says there hasn't been any warming since 1998, that's more than a few years.

The climate is indeed warmer in many places, cooler in others. On the whole, it can be demostrated, even with unadjusted, non-value-added records, that many places are warmer than they used to be. Few places are cooler.

Speculating about causality is a whole other ball-game. There is a reasonable physical link between heat retention and some gasses. There are also reasonable hypothesis that this (very small) physical mechanism might be amplified to the effect observed.

Right now there are several competing OBSERVATIONS that contradict the amplification hypothesis. And I have yet to see any reasonable grounds to speculate about causality.

None of this has anything to do with Al Gore. His relentless appeals to authority and emotion in search of a regulatory regime from which he will personally greatly benefit are utterly transparent.

He comes right out and states that if only we could use the "rule of law" to force people to comply with his plan we could save the planet. He decries free people promoting their own ideas. He scoffs at diversity. He mocks and slanders people as deniers.

This is the worst kind of demagogery in search of power to compel and dominate.

Frankly, even if he was right, and the majority didn't agree with him, and our civilisation is lost, then at least I would rather go as a free man. Al Gore would have you be a slave working barefoot on his plantation, paying an air tax so your children can breath.

I choose freedom.

It is not surprising that the New York Times is the last refuge for the Great Fraudster to try and peddle his scam.

We must support Algore. We must believe Algore. We must both support and believe Algore. Thus say our betters the liberal elite talking heads and societal editors at the NYT. I call fraud. I want my tax money back that has been spent on this giant fraud. I figure it should come out to just about $250.00 per person in the US (Like our climate warming friends, I just made that statistic up)

But this line of argument you've taken ( climate=weather) discredits your position and makes skeptics look dumb.

That fails to take into account the ground that the AGW proponents have staked out for themselves.

AGW proponents have made a direct correlation between rising CO2 and rising temperature.
They say that rising CO2 forces temperature to rise and predicted that the only outcome from rising CO2 will be steadily rising temperature.

Even a short term trend of stasis or temperature reversal, while CO2 levels continue to rise, shows the position they have staked out to be false.

If their theory is correct, we shouldn't even have cold weather spikes or trends at all.

"Dumb" is failing to hear what the AGW proponents have been screaming in our faces for the last 20 years and holding them to account for it.

Fred, that's a tragic story, but the obvious villain is GUNS.

England should consider banning firearms.

What the heck are the AGW trolls doing here anyway?

Haven't they noticed the sub headings on the front page of SDA? You would think that would be enough to keep these fraudsters from opening their yaps at least until the dust settled.

In the word of Napoleon Dynamite: Gosh! Idiots!

I'll hazard a guess - that most rain falls on the ocean. Simply because there's a lot of it.

Does anyone in here want to volunteer to read post titles out loud for folks?

Instead of climate=weather, another way to compare the two articles is nature=complexity. At this point in time climate science is barely scratching the surface of the dynamics involved in climate change. Yet, Al Gore and others are rushing to implement "large-scale, preventive measures to protect human civilization" based on science that is in its infancy. As blog I read on the weekend put it "I resent being told what to do by infants".

most rain falls in the ocean for two reasons, there is more ocean than land and the water saturation of the air over water is higher.

Who cleaned up the Co2 that forest fires spewed in the air, over the last twenty million years? For FREE!
There was a lot more fuel then, and we survived that $hitstorm...

They should be thanked, and politely asked to carry on their good works!

While I'm at it, what happens to the chlorine in our domestic, does it hurt the atmosphere? Always wondered about that.

Is there another potential money making racket here?

The point is, LC and friends, a joke based on irony: everytime AlGore shows up to give a speech the weather always gets cold and quite often reaches minimums or does freaky things associated with cold (like snow), whenever he opens his frantic mouth.

Kate is in no way stating (like some global warming alarmists, Suzuki anyone?) that a large snowstorm is evidence of global cooling. Its just weather.

Not an ad hominem attack....just a well founded opinion...

Alarmists are invariably partisan lefties----no exceptions----just listen a bit....

Why else would anybody smarter than a 5th grader ever believe this crap?

Wow Kate
Where did you attract these people from, defiantly not the usual suspects, read the title folks, OK will that do.
But seriously, I'm a usually reasoned sort of a person that can suffer most fools albeit not gladly, but please please please can I have some of the drugs that work for Gore.
I really wish that I could ramble on in an meandering disorganized incoherent manner peddling blatant lies as truth and not only have people read and listen to me BUT make money as well.
Actually, I'm really pretty much changing my mind, there is no reasoning with someone like Gore he refuses to debate the likes of Lord Monckton and yet still continues to look down and admonish the proles for their failure to bow down and worship at his altar.
Enough of this madness... In a delightful phrase coined from our (I am English) cousins there is only one answer for Gore "Lock and Load"

Gore in his column argues that the heavy snowfall does prove global warming so he is using weather to prove climate change. If it had been low snowfall he would argue that that was proof too.

The key thing about this column is that he is de facto aknowledging that AGW theory is debatable. He has come down from the hubris mountaintop and entered into the swamp of fact and real analysis - unarmed for the beating he is going to take.

Here's my juxtaposition:

Page 1 - "And we would still trail China in the race to develop smart grids, fast trains, solar power, wind, geothermal and other renewable sources of energy — the most important sources of new jobs in the 21st century"

Page 2 - "China, now the world’s largest and fastest-growing source of global-warming pollution"

I just don't know what to say.

"We Can't Wish Away Al Gore"

Then Al Gore closes with my favorite part of his piece…

“Public officials must rise to this challenge by doing what is required; and the public must demand that they do so — or must replace them.”

We, the public, have been doing that all year Al baby! Have you not been at least reading the NY Times politics pages. Perhaps you missed the public actually electing people who represent their values, nobody will get elected on Cap and Trade this fall Mr Gore. Wishing the reality of that away will not save your investments or the repercussions that are coming for you personally in the form of Public Officials rising to the challenge to do what is required by the public, and that is to defeat this Climate Alarmism, and that means you Al Gore personally will pay for the scam you have been running to enrich yourself.

- Excerpt From my blog

I love how the writer constantly refers to "scientists" in the same fashion numerous school board employees referred to the "experts" when they were trying to convince me that failing my daughter would be catastrophic for my daughters’ education.

I'm pleased to report my daughter currently is averaging around a B+ in the classes I was warned she should never try again.

So if the Goracle is citing this heavy snowfall weather event as proof that increased Co2 levels are affecting the climate, could he please explain why there was so much snow 114 years ago when Co2 levels were much lower?

Syncro

Obama Administration is pre-blaming a possible rise in US unemployment numbers on Global Warming!

Follow my thinking here...

Al Gore says winter storms are indicative and are caused by AGW in this Op-Ed, Obama Admin thinks Al Gore is a genius (cough), Larry Summers says the job numbers may be distorted by the same winter storms caused by AGW by possibly reducing hiring at companies in the NE corridor and increasing the number of people laid off because of business closures(except maybe in the snow removal industry).

So Global Warming is responsible for any possible weakness in the employment reports for February.

Damn that Gore Effect!

I've noted before Syncro that we seem to be breaking "old" records a lot. Maybe the media just likes to highlight old records, but it seems to me that breaking old records is more indicative of statistical extremes than of any overt trend. Otherwise, the weather records broken should tilt towards younger dates.

Exactly Kate. The contortions that the warmists are willing to execute belong in a Cirque de Soliel performance.

I wait for the day Climatologist joins the English lexicon as a term of derision.
Like Moron or buffoon.
JMO

Basically, the good scientist Jones admitted that the Medieval Warm Period existed and the temperatures were a lot higher then than now.
For me thats all that matters really. There was nothing spewing out CO2 at that time yet the temps rose anyway. Its all cyclic.

Horny Toad .... the difference bewtween then and now ... is that we have a vast infrastructure that our society depends on to exist if not grow and prosper.

In the past people just waited out the weather and got by as best they could.

These corksoakers are trying to pull it down.

An even if they were in any way right about the fact or the consequences of global warming (they ARE NOT) it would be monumentally stupid to undertake the economic measures they are trying to saddle us with.

Where is all the dancing in the streets and partying since we now know that the world won't end next Wednesday because of AGW?

Shouldn't all the hippies and Gore disciples be celebrating?

Gaia is safe, it was all just a terrible mistake.

It's like the Doc telling you they mixed up the lab results and that thing on your ass isn't cancer, it's just a boil.
Wouldn't you go out and celebrate?
