France has backed down from a plan to tax carbon dioxide emissions that had been central to its push for a more prominent role in the fight against climate change.
The plan, launched by president Nichola Sarkozy with much fanfare last September, has been stalled since being ruled unconstitutional in December.
Government mulls car burning tax....

tax the Car-B-Q kiddies?
Brilliant :)
It is like taxing one religion and not others.
Couldn't happen to nicer people.

Meanwhile Obama is revving up the cap and trade legislation. It's like we are living in an alternate universe.
Those car fires were not caused by French "youth" error. They were Toyotas suffering from undue self-immolation.

1998: 14,000 cars burned
2005: 45,588 cars burned
2006: 44,157 cars burned
2007: 46,814 cars burned
2008: 40,496 cars burned
2009: the expected final number will again exceed 40,000
I'm sure French auto makers are hoping the numbers don't keep decreasing as they did from '07 to '08!
Slackers, let's get those numbers up!
Hey France, this is Quebec calling, we've got this stuff called Asbestos lying around, doesn't burn, we'll sell a load of it to you cheap to make car bodies, intead of using fibreglass or carbon fibre.
Call them LeCoughCars.
All of the above, you made my morning laugh. Thanks much.
Hmmm, actually maybe those guys over there in gay paree might be onto something that might save government motors.
Suicides. Their mother warned them not to park there but oh no they just had to do it.
I'm not one to get on the "Obama is socialist" bandwagon, but it does make you wonder what's going on when France is embracing free trade more than the States... http://bit.ly/cQJnFl

note the climate change remorse in the CBCpravda article.
I also see Ontario and Quebec in Alberta begging for oilsands work after trashing the resource last year.
That car burning tax will actually be a tax on the OWNERS of the car that was burned...
Otherwise it would be religion and race intolerance, not to mention the poor people that are lighting cars on fire are on the government dole already, no need to pile on more adversity.
