Reader Tips

Good evening ladies and gentlemen, welcome to SDA Late Nite Radio. Tonight, for your delectation, here are Frankie Carle and his band performing Peter DeRose's 1933 classic: Deep Purple § (ca.1950, 3:01). And here's Frankie, standing, stage right, at the Hotel Pennsylvania.

And with a tip 'o the hat to Me No Dhimmi from yesterday's Reader Tips, here is I think an excellent new essay by the always interesting Mr. Theodore Dalyrmple: Thank You For Not Expressing Yourself, in which I think it can be reasonably postulated that he is arguing that just getting angry is a romantic thing to do, not a classical (or, I would argue, conservative) thing to do. And I think that 孫子 would agree. From time to time it can be, I think, the case that it is indeed appropriate to recall Benjamin Franklin's sage advice: He that would live in peace and at ease must not speak all he knows or all he sees.

Your Reader Tips are, as always, welcome in the comments.

"There are only two events on Sunday, the hockey game and a 50-kilometer men's cross-country race. Americans and Canadians are long shots to get medals in either event."

Huh?

Deep purple! Sounds like a porn flick! Nice song! Thanks Vi t! Reminds me of a joke that was going around the rigs a few years ago, A guy and his new bride has slept at a motel in Swift Current, Saskatchewan on the first night of their honeymoon. The next day, they headed west. Suddenly they saw a town appear on the horizon. The bride asks: "Is it Red Deer?" "Yes," replies the groom. "And it's sore as hell!"

J.C. - Please refer to Ben Franklin's honourable suggestion. Deep Purple sounds like a porn flick? And Frankie Carle was the piano player in the whorehouse.

Re SDA January 4 "The Humane Society Gravy Train"
"HSUS paid out over $30.9 million in salaries, wages, and other employee compensation. ... HSUS gave only a little more than $450,000—that’s just half of one percent of its total budget—in grants to organizations providing hands-on care to dogs and cats."

Here's another look at what the HSUS [The Humane Society of the United States] is up to.
http://www.cattlenetwork.com/Jolley--Five-Minutes-With-David-Martosko---RICO--The-HSUS-Dog/2010-02-23/Merial_Article.aspx?oid=991510&fid=VN-HOT_TOPICS&hq_e=el&hq_m=625473&hq_l=3&hq_v=1ac1ef30a0

In short, the HSUS paid a former circus employee $190,000 to lie in court so the HSUS could shake down Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus. HSUS is now faced with a racketeering lawsuit that could cost them a 100 million, but will likely take 3 years or more to get there.

Thanks for that, Vit, but a bit like throwing pearls before swine judging from the comments.

From the Ottawa Citizen. Some more swine at Winnipeg school: Teachers filmed doing lap dance could lose their jobs. The school has rules so the kids could be fined for taping it.

Amazingly the male teacher involved in the lap dance, which included simulated oral sex, is named Adeil Ahmed.

If he and the female teacher are fired, hope he doesn't scream discrimination.

Vit, just looked at the picture.
Frankie Carle is the one with his arms on the shoulders of the two girls.
Seen his photo enough times on albums, but have checked online as well.

[Yes, that's what I meant by "stage right" ~ sorry I wasn't more clear. ~ Vitruvius]

I haven't seen any of my usual blogs look at the 'global warming suicide pact' from the angle of moral culpability of the AGW crowd and was wondering if someone more eloquent than I was approaching it from that angle?

Thanks Vitruvius. It is a beautiful song and does not matter who plays, Frankie Carle, Sarah Vaughan, Guy Lombardo or Henry Mancini. Makes one want to have a glass of wine and dance with a lady.

Is Ash Soular the the up and coming 'Cher"?

Does she have a 'Bono' manager assist to
stardom?

Her politics are OK.. Get a load of 'Obamanation'.

She's my kind of gal.. A bit young though.

Here she plays some Santana.

Mmm.. good for one so young.

Vitruvius wrote:...getting angry is a romantic thing to do, not a classical (or, I would argue, conservative) thing to do.

Those pesky younguns need to be programmed in some way.

I may be delusional but sometimes it appears that people of a certain political viewpoint have become masters in the art of disrupting/confusing/misdirecting otherwise rational discussion.

I often wonder if this is the only talent of a subset of society.

Thanks for that Reader Tip Revnant Dream. Gore can not seem to be able to open his mouth these day's without putting both feet in. He is desperate to keep the AGW myth alive. It must give him nightmares thinking about all the money he is going to loose.

is an audio link to some skeptics discussing why people believe in ghosts. It's lengthy but pretty insightful and explains a lot about why some people might have other motivations to, ummm, "adopt a different world view".

My Favourite part of the "Thank you for Not Expressing Yourself Article" which I thought was very well written and thought provoking is...

Yet, Malice never was his Aim;
He lash’d the vice, but spar’d the Name.
No Individual could resent,
Where Thousands equally were meant...
For he abhorr’d that senseless Tribe,
Who call it humour when they jibe...

I've added this to my ever growing collection of quotes.

RIP.

John Babcock.

Lest We Forget.

"Federal government plans Vimy Ridge Day ceremonies

The federal government plans to hold a national commemorative ceremony April 9 to honour Canadians who served in the First World War now that the country's last-known veteran has died.

The ceremony at the National War Memorial in Ottawa is one of several events to be held countrywide on the anniversary of the day in 1917 when Canadians famously took Vimy Ridge in France.

Remembrance ceremonies will also be held at the Canadian National Vimy Memorial in France and the Canada Memorial at Green Park in London, Veterans Affairs Minister Jean-Pierre Blackburn announced Tuesday.

Blackburn and other Canadian dignitaries attended a memorial service in Spokane, Wash., on Saturday for John Henry Foster (Jack) Babcock, who died Feb. 18 at the age of 109.

Babcock was acknowledged to be the last of 650,000 Canadian men and women who served in what was then known as the "war to end all wars." About 68,000 of them died between 1914 and 1917.

"While we have lost our last direct link to the First World War, we will continue to encourage young Canadians to remember and understand our proud military history and heritage," Blackburn said.

"The First World War is a defining part of the Canada we know today and it is a legacy that must be preserved for generations to come.""

(PDF warning) James Q. Roberts, Addressing the Zawahirist Outsurgency

We can debate whether we are at war with Al Qaeda, but rest assured Al Qaeda is at war with us. The targets, methods, diversity, geographic dispersion, and lethality or near lethality of the recent series of Al Qaeda inspired attacks should cause us to reassess the very nature of this conflict.

Attacks in the last few months include a shooting spree by U.S. Army Major Dr. Nidal Hasan, at Fort Hood; an attempted aircraft bombing by Abdulmuttalab, a Nigerian, over Detroit; an axe attack by Muhamed Geele, a Somali, in Denmark; and a precision suicide bombing by Dr. al-Bawali, a Jordanian, in Khost, Afghanistan...

These events show that Al Qaeda franchisees are operating without need of direction from the corporate headquarters. Al Qaeda today is a flat, dispersed, multi-celled structure which executes on “commander’s intent” not waiting for orders from above. Actors self radicalize, seek out and connect with inspirational figures like Al Aulaqi in Yemen, and execute plots independent of commands from senior leaders.

This paper proposes a change in our approach...

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/travelnews/7358967/Muslim-woman-barred-from-flight-after-refusing-body-scan.html

Snip:
She was warned she would not be allowed to board the Pakistan International Airlines flight if she did not comply with the request but she decided to forfeit her ticket.
Her female travelling companion also left the airport after she cited 'medical reasons' for not wanting to go through the scanner.

These dear women are obviously confused, don't they know that they are the 'ones' that airport security is just trying to protect?
And as a side note, it must be nice to be able to throw money away like that?

I'm wondering what Sean from Saskatchewan has been lately. Maybe this story might answer the question.

What are you talking about, Joe? I did not edit your comments. However,
if you start to talk to me like that then I may just delete your comments.
You should do yourself a favour and read Theodore Dalyrmple's essay
supra: Thank You For Not Expressing Yourself.

If I've erred--I apologize! But I could have sworn that there was a large part of my comment (March 02-2010-1:19 PM that was "altered." Must be Sask-Tel!!

I deleted your last comment. The rules on profanity here are pretty simple. I very seldom delete comments unless they are abusive, seriously off topic and/or malicious trolling.

Sarah Palin on the Tonight Show...

"TRS notes correctly that Leno doesn’t plow any new interviewing ground with Palin, but he does a pretty good job in drawing her out on some of the questions that get shorter shrift in other forums. The main takeaway will be how poised and engaging Palin is..."

Jay appears quite comfortable too. Not news worthy at all, but an enjoyable few minutes to see someone not being ripped apart.

Yikes! Check the comments out at this story regarding health care in the US. Is abcnew.com a "rightwing" organization? If not, these comments are much more one (right) sided than I would anticipate based on the polls I've seen.
