No clicky Pete "The Commie" Seeger linky...

Have you ever heard the perfect musical pitch? Its when you toss the banjo in the dumpster and it lands on the accordion. Actually the banjo and mandolin are two of my favourite instruments due to their affiliation of the greatest music genre Blue Grass!

That's because you, RFC, have got your head so far up your ass that you can no longer separate the history of music from your particular politics du jour. You're like those howling assholes over in the Olympics thread who can't even manage to celebrate a gold medal in men's hockey without howling complaints about some god damned thing or another ~ they always think of something. Frankly, it's disgusting. And anyway, SDA Late Nite Radio is about music, not politics. Get over it. /Rant

Excellent response, RFC ;-)

Meanwhile, your Reader Tips are, as always, welcome.

As the olympics come to a close, and the global warming issue rages on, it is minus 41°C at Eureka Station, Nunavut at this very moment. (10:30 PMCST.)
Do icebergs melt at that temp?

It depends on the pressure. It's sublime.

As a comparison to the Vancouver Olympics gear, here is the Sochi Olympic gear...
enjoy, :)

Ole Pete could sure pick and he could sure harmonize with Ronnie Gilbert, even if he was one hell of a Bolshevik. Come to think of it, the same could be said for Burl Ives, and man could he act!

And Shaw, and Orwell, and Mill. Life's like that. Don't let it spoil your day.

I agree. There should be a law about a Canadian team ragging the puck. The coach should be put in shackles and hauled off to jail!!!

Vi t & Infinity squared:

As long as going to jail in cuffs involves one of those boffo Buble sidekick girls, in severely modified RCMP uniforms from the closing cermonies, the coach would probably be glad to be hauled off to jail...!!!

Cheers

"Climate scientist to testify about leaked e-mails

LONDON - The scientist at the centre of the controversy over emails stolen from a British climate research centre is due to be questioned by lawmakers.

Climatologist Phil Jones is among the experts due to testify before Parliament's Science and Technology committee. Jones figured prominently in more than 1,000 emails hacked from the University of East Anglia's Climate Research Unit last year. The emails appeared to show Jones and colleagues denigrating skeptics of man-made global warming and discussing ways to dodge Freedom of Information requests.

Critics said the emails were evidence of a conspiracy to exaggerate the threat of climate change.

Also testifying Monday are other top researchers, including the British weather office's chief scientist."

"'Green Zone' star Matt Damon is disappointed in President Barack Obama"

"Damon admits he's "disappointed" in the man who replaced George W. Bush.

"Politics is compromise," says the actor, who campaigned hard for Barack Obama. But Damon feels his candidate has compromised too much. "I'm disappointed in the health care plan and in the troop buildup in Afghanistan. Everyone feels a little let down because, on some level, people expected all their problems to go away. But real change comes from everyday people. You can't wait for a leader.""

Yelling at the fascists at the airports is long overdue. Finally someone unleashed on them. Deport the terrorists, leave us alone, OK?

As a recent student of the banjo, I'm blown away by the versatility and just plain frendliness of this instrument. It truly is a folk instrument upon which even semi-skilled musicians can easily make music for folks to enjoy in a local or family setting.

With more than 21 identified tunings, and generally being tuned to key pitch (G) its easy to get a recognizable tune out to sing or dance to.

What has hampered the banjo, paradoxically, are the Scruggs-bluegrass and the clawhammer playing styles, pretty much squeezing out everything in between. Not to diminish Earl, but some of the best banjo playing uses neither style.

As an example, this version of an old folk song called Lost Gander, played by Brian Scott, is exquisite. There is a technique called chiming, used for the high notes, which is not easy to master, and upon which this tune depends.

Lost Gander

Great stuff, Skip. If a young fella can learn to play that well, why couldn't I, even though I am long past my meridian splendour? Didn't Goethe write Faust in his 70's or 80's? Suspect that my fingers are no more nimble than my mind, however.

At the time of that video, Brian had been playing about 8 years, according to him (he's 33). He learns by ear, and by book, not by tab. I agree with your sentiment - that logic isn't working for me either. One thing I've been looking at, are the hands of good guitar and stringed instrument players, and with a couple of notable exceptions (Johnny Hiland being one), they all have long skinny fingers. I don't :(

I OFFICIALLY COMPLAINED TO THE CBC OMBUDSMAN TODAY.

After years of having my (western Canadian) comments deleted from the CBC news sites I have lodged an official complaint. Here is a copy of my email to Vince Carlin (CBC OMBUDSMAN):

(email title) = Biased CBC moderator complaint

To Vince Carlin

Thank you for your time. I have held off complaining about CBC moderators for a long time because I always allow for a mistake or two or for people to have an off day.

However the problem appears to be an on going bias of CBC website moderators who delete any comments that do not suit their political fancy.

As a taxpayer funded news source the CBC must give a voice to all Canadians without filtering it through a biased moderator.

All of my comments submitted to CBC news sites are clean , truthful , factual , non-personal , and comply with all rules of etiquette.

My latest (deleted) comment was on this news item at aprox 1:02 pm cst Monday March 1st 2010.

I also let the moderators know that I would be lodging a complaint.

Thank you for your time.
I am completely serious about this issue and will follow it closely.

David F. Smith, The Charade of "Carbon Pollution"

Every free-living creature on earth oxidises carbon, thus producing carbon dioxide. We also oxidise other carbon compounds to get energy when we need it, so life on earth is absolutely underpinned by a carbon economy. Yes, we may produce too much carbon dioxide, but it is not toxic, just sitting innocently there in the atmosphere waiting to be incorporated into carbohydrates by the process of photosynthesis. Many people are now surprised to learn that if carbon has an effect on global temperature it is through physical rather than any chemical (toxic) effects..

Ray Evans, Copenhagen: End Game for Green Imperialism

Rio was the brainchild of Canadian oil entrepreneur and left-wing international political fixer Maurice Strong. In writing about Strong, the New Yorker commented, “The survival of civilization in something like its present form might depend significantly on the efforts of a single man.” The New York Times hailed Strong as the “Custodian of the Planet”.

It was at Rio that the audacious Green strategy of turning the UN into an instrument of “global governance”, run by the environmentalists of Europe and North America, began to get traction. The vehicle chosen to provide the motive power for their strategy was the global warming scam, which took off in the USA under the energetic vice-presidential patronage of Al Gore, and in the UK had had the prime ministerial patronage of Margaret Thatcher, something she later came to regret (“it provides a marvellous excuse for worldwide, supranational socialism”)...
