Shortly after noon on a recent Saturday, Fatima Thompson, a Muslim convert, and three other women prayed in the men’s section of the lavishly decorated Islamic Center of Washington, in a moment akin to Rosa Parks’ refusal to give up her seat.

Police officer Barry Goodwin soon arrived and awkwardly walked over to the line of women—in his socks, because he couldn’t enter the mosque in shoes—to search for the organizers.

Doesn't the good officer know that he cannot identify people who are clad is a large sack with only their peepers showing?
It all seems pretty simple to me - don't go to the mosques!!
Maybe I'm being unreasonable here but why would one convert to a religion that treats women like crap?
Just asking.
Well if women are equal to men and thus should be allowed into the men's section; Why are all the women wearing gunny sacks?
osumashi....I'm more confused myself. They like sharing their hubby, sharia law,and possible stonings and death? Methinks a psych ward in due.
Perhaps, justthinkin.
It's a start anyhow.
I think that's great, and I hope there's more of that. IF a Muslim version of a stubborn-feminist movement started to get any traction, and if the brave women leading the movement started to become famous, ala Rosa Parks, all the the western lefto-feminists who have been pretending not to notice the behaviour of Muslim men towards Muslim women because they want to continue bashing the west, the patriarchy, colonialism, etc etc might actually have to go on record as either saying "no, these women should sit at the back of the mosque," or make the historic (for them) pronouncement that Muslim women should have equal rights. Either outcome would expose the vapidity and inconsistency of their recent (decades-long) position on, say, Afghanistan.
What will eat itself?
CHEER UP!.. Something constructive and correct for respect for all women is is being enacted into law in ... Quebec!
By a POLITICIAN, Jean Charest..
No face covering allowed in at least the most important places..
Does he check SDA?
Now this is good news....

As much as I'd like to see these women prevail because I want to see Islam moderated and reformed, it is a question of following the rules of the religion.
If you don't follow the rules, then don't join the club or if you're in the club the club has the right to turf you out of the clubhouse at the very least.
What's next?
Women demanding to be ordained as priests in the Catholic Church?
Maybe people who have been cut off from taking part in communion for being in a state of sin will demand to take part like everyone else because they feel demeaned for being singled out?
Sheesh.
Freedom of religion means the freedom to practice that religion according to the rules of that religion.
Places of worship are not public places and religions are not public institutions.
Like a private club or privately owned business they should have the right to restrict admittance to people who don't follow the rules or basically anyone they see fit to bar.
Drawing a comparison between this incident and Rosa Parks riding public transit is BS.
I hate to say but didn't that chick know what kind of religion she was buying into when she got converted? What a wacko.
Daily poll from cbc
Muslim women and others with concealing headwear will have to uncover their faces when they deal with Quebec government services, under landmark legislation tabled Wednesday in the province's legislature. Is this a reasonable limit on a woman's right to choose whether she will wear a head covering?

When you keep slaves for sex and working dawn to dusk in your wifeless household, these problems seldom arise. Any observant muslim who didn't stop the unaccompanied by male relatives women from entering a mosque and carrying on like that or not giving them all a thorough hiding afterward would soon find himself labeled as a total pussy.
The way I read it is that the cops enforced sharia law.
Not good.
While I agree that these tiny incremental moves may do some good in the western world that does not have an islamic majority,I do not think that anything will change the rest of the world, particularily the 57 islamic states. If,and hopefully never when, the barbarians achieve a majority in the other countries, these uppity women will be the among first to buried to their waist and shown the true nature of Islam.
"Please take you shoes off but bring your Glock and M4..."
Now expect these gals to get treated to a trip to hubby's homeland.......once.
Now, THIS is progressive. Wonder whether so-called "progressives" will concur, or remain silent?
Next, I want to see GLBT Muslims coming out... in Mosques everywhere...
The question that occured to me was, what law was the officer enforcing? I am not a lawyer. Can anyone familiar with US law anwswer my question?
I can not help but feel a great deal of compassion for these women. Either they are murdered for leaving the religion or they stay and have their souls murdered slowly.
What disturbs me the most is how seemingly matter of fact she stated honor killings, suicide bombings, violence, interfaith relations, and enforcement of strict gender segregation is the reality of her religion; almost like it was the expected norm.
I wonder if she had to ask permission of the mosque to publish the article. If so, are the men trying to communicate that they are letting up on their women a wee bit, so we westerners shouldn't get so upset about silly things like clothing rules that necessitate that women must hide their faces in public? I really don't know, and feel a little ashamed for even thinking such a thing. Nonetheless, what a horrible way to "live".
What Abe and EBD said.
"Three mosque officials hovered over the women. What irked them, they later said, was that late-arriving men had to pray behind women."
In their culture it's very important for men to come first.
Can you just imagine the screaming that would be happening if this had been some Christian church/sect, where women were treated as second class?
The HRC's would be Mach 1 before they cleared the tower, the NDP would be apoplectic and the Progressive Mob be be going nuts, absolutely frik*n nuts.
With respect to the Quebec law, I do not think it is discriminatory - they can keep their ethnic dress, but they will not receive government services. If I moved to the Middle East, I would have to follow their rules and cover up - which is why I will only ever go to Israel, if I ever do go to the ME.
This Muslim women surprised me with her article on Tantric Sex in Avatar - enlightening to say the least - she is definately "intimate" with this subject. Her husband reading her articles somehow seems more plausible to me now :)
Nice post EDB.
I somewhat agree with OZ also… I think, but I’m not certain. These women are free to worship on their own property as they wish. The problem isn't the mosque enforcing its policies, the problem is the retarded choice of these women to participate in this retarded faith. Also, the officer isn’t enforcing Sharia law, he’s enforcing the mosque’s and the owner’s right to decide who their patrons are, and what the conduct of said patrons is under their roof.
Does a boy have the right to sit-in on a girls phys.ed class because it's he feels he's being discriminated against; or, does the school have the right to educate the kids in the manner they see best fit?
"Maybe I'm being unreasonable here but why would one convert to a religion that treats women like crap?

Have you known women who date and even marry guys who are abusive, rude and maybe don't make much money or go out a lot with the boys ...etc.
Who can explain women with that head-space and there are many of them. Also, if they get rid of their lout, they often go out and get another one who is much the same.
Some women are nuts ...
Haven't we all been going on about lefties going after christians but giving the mussies a pass?
As annoying as feminists can be, in this case, I say: Go for it! All you have to lose is your head...
These galls have real balls. Unlike Alex Baldwin et al and their heroic "speaking truth to power" schtick.
As far as their real point, this is a private mosque and they have the right to their religious practices and if you don't like it, join a religion that doesn't offend you. You have no right to change the one that does offend you.
That's sort of contradictory on my part, isn't it?? lol. You could say I'm of two minds on this one. Or you could say it would be great if they'd both lose... ;)
Does Islam recognize sanctuary?
EBD - excellent post. I agree; it will be the women who reform Islam.
Oz - a religion is a human construct; therefore it is open to change. Remember also that Islam is less a religion than it is a social and political ideology of the 7th century - there is very little metaphysical or religious in it and most of that is lifted from the judaic thought of the time.
The qu'ran and the later hadiths are desperately in need of revision, particularly since, unlike the Christian and Judaic texts which are open to interpretation, the qu'ran is held to be the direct immutable word of god. That's just a means to entrench a people into a frozen mindset, and living in a 7th c mindset is a bit dysfunctional in the 21st century.
"EBD - excellent post. I agree; it will be the women who reform Islam."
Agreed. I've said from day one that Islamic fanaticism has been, and is about one thing, and one thing only: The oppression of women.
IMO the root of the anger towards the west is that our lifestyle and values have trickled into their society. Just like blue jeans and the Soviet Union, the muzzies just could not suppress the stories of liberation and freedom from their women.
These guys know damn well, that given the choice to women, not one of these fckers would get laid. Ever! Not at least without a shave and a shower.
Tough call, but donning my libertarian hat, I'd have to go with Indiana Homez and Oz: it's really a matter of property rights. The private owners of the mosque get to make the rules. Period.
In this instance the cops are actually doing what the state is supposed to do: protect property rights. I don't see him enforcing shari'a law here.
I don't have a problem with these ladies.
They didn't make a scene, they didn't vandalize the mosque, they didn't stone the imam, they didn't cut anybody's throat, they didn't even spill nail polish on the carpet.
They just broke the rules. Unapologetically, firmly, and deliberately. And when the cops showed up and told them to leave, they left.
That's a civil piece of disobedience. Next week, let 40 women show up and do the same. A week later, 100. Another week, 300. Let the imams and husbands have a nookie drought while they're at it.
Pretty soon, curtain comes down. That's how the blacks did it in the South in the 1960's. Excellent way to do things.
As for Quebec, if I have to worry that the CHRC is going to come after me for posting quotations from English imams on my blog like Mark Steyn, because maybe it might offend some delicate flower named Fatima, then maybe Fatima the flour-bag wearing civil service seat polisher can damn well worry about her flour-bag offending ME.
And frankly, it does. Some damn bureaucrat is going to demand my papers, I want to see her face.
There will be a lynching .. ah, honour killing tonight!
Some years ago in Vancouver, a man knocked the ciborium (containing the consecrated species) out of the Bishop's hands, sending it to the floor. He was charged with interrupting a Divine service, and got little more than a wrist-slap. It would have been more effective to charge him with assault.
There just, and unjust, laws & rules.
Unjust laws & rules are, in the big scheme of things, intended to be broken.
Btw, who owns this mosque? Allah? Can he/she claim that his/her property rights were infringed by these women?
Another btw, if it hadn't been for some stubborn people who didn't accept a 1300 years old religion's status quo, there would not have been any protestants around.
It seems to me that while these women have a point, this mosque is private property and as such are out of line. Private property rights above all else.
Property rights above all else?
Like in Caledonia?
But anyway, don't think it's about property rights, more like 'rules for a house of prayer/worship'. But it glaringly showed how much the male muslims lord over their female members. What's weird is the involvement of Cdn police in this 'terrible crime at the mosque' and their response; a directive of "follow the rules, girls".
But it's a start, way to go ladies.
Imagine what our guys and gals see in Afstan.
You cannot help but pity the girls/women born into Islam, but it's hard to feel any empathy for a Western-educated woman who voluntarily joins Islam and is then surprised that she's relegated to second-class status. It's like those Western women who marry a Muslim man, move to his country and then you hear about their terrible plight in the local newspaper. Why is anybody surprised or incensed when a person "plays with fire" they get burned?
> Property rights above all else?
> Like in Caledonia?
Different countries, but good example.
Ah yes Aaron, thanks for pointing that out - my glaring mistake. LOL
- obviously reading many open links at once in the wee hours of the am, is not a good idea for me with a cup of java hours away ... :)
Do hope this act of defiance by the women continues, although I am not sure it will be sucessful as by default in Islam, according to the koran, a woman is considered only half the value of a man.
Or as others have stated above, maybe this will be the start of the reformation of Islam - that is so desperately needed. Be wonderful to see the women lead this necessary change.
Well, to put it bluntly, I suspect there are about to be some honor killings by some of the male patrons of that mosque. The civil rights movement worked in America, because white people actually had some respect and boundaries that they would not cross. Not so with the moderate mainstream Muslims who support gender segregation and such. These women have just joined the extreme radical fringe of Islam (where people act human), and are in danger from the vast moderate majority (led by rage boy). Ask Ayaan Hirsi Ali, or Noni Darwish, or Salman Rushdie what it is like to be on the radical fringe of Islam. Not a safe place.
Actually this could be the best way to fight international terrorism. Could you imagine if all mosques in the US had to choose between tax free status and letting women have equal rights? All the fundamentalists and extremists mosques (which would be all of them) would have to chose tax free status (because of their delusional psychosis) and thus that would greatly curtail their fundraising ability, most of these funds being used to support extremists and terrorists at home and abroad.
Yes, it is the women that can crush Islamism, if they are brave and tough enough.
Rosa Parks is a good analogy, though I doubt she took as much grief as these ladies will.
"Maybe I'm being unreasonable here but why would one convert to a religion that treats women like crap"
Wow! Sounds like the old testament in the bible! maybe even the new one!
Let me speak slowly and carefully, Hypocrite.
In my religion, neither my father nor my brothers dictate my behaviour. I am free to learn, get a job, spend my money, dress as I please and congregate with whomever I wish. I say what I like, being responsible only to God who sent His Son to teach me mercy and compassion (it's in the New Testament, by the way). I only cover my head with a toque when the weather warrants it, not because some tribal, emotionally-backward moron tells me to do so.
Did I go too fast for you?
So the Dominion of Canada is enforcing religious law now? Interesting.
Mojo.. lease..think..
Not a religious law at all. Far more a matter of national security in so very many sensitive areas.
Oh wait.. Hope you are not one of those guys who likes to wear a balaclava and
go on a wild time on the town?
The Taliban coming from the Pakistan border were seen changing into burkahs to conceal weapons.
Only the covered face makes that possible.
