Hmmm.

My. My. At least they have a good bead on what people are likely to say about them.

The arbitrary shooting of wildlife from a plane. Real sportsman like. Any one that thinks that this is sporting and the way hunting should be done is a sick and perverted moron. I am not anti-hunting, but it should be done in an ethical and sportsman like manner. These type of actions are what give the anti-hunting lobby fuel for their fire. If this were done here, the perpetrators would be heavily fined, have all their gear and plane confiscated and be prohibited from hunting for a long time, as it should be.

Poor T. He/she/it has this all confused with "sporting". Must suck to have such poor reading comprehension skills.

When are wolves like Muzzies? When "shooting at" them will only make them madder:

Shooting at wolves will make them more desperate, he predicted. "They become far more likely to go into towns, to frequent trails, to become problem wolves," he said.

So face it: the solution is to invite them into your homes.

never happens when they watch Disney movies or Avatar in 3D.

Must be global warming making the wolves "crazy".

"The arbitrary shooting of wildlife from a plane. Real sportsman like. Any one that thinks that this is sporting and the way hunting should be done is a sick and perverted moron. I am not anti-hunting, but it should be done in an ethical and sportsman like manner"

Because EVERYONE knows that an animal that is shot by a hunter in a "blind" is not near as dead as one shot from a plane"

Idiot!!!

...John Toppenberg, director of the Alaska Wildlife Alliance - Shooting at wolves will make them more desperate, he predicted. "They become far more likely to go into towns, to frequent trails, to become problem wolves," he said.

Oh, he just doesn't get it. These problem wolves are the ones that will volunteer to be shot.

Now that the wolves have tasted human flesh they will be attracted to the smell and taste of the meat. They will go for the easiest kill possible. The citizens of that town are in some serious trouble until those wolves are put down.

What did they do go and hunt down the stupidest people in the town for that interview? That is the kind of dad we all want, "the wolves ate my daughter but she would be ok with that, I am."

Culling? That's a recruitment tool! Zoos? Gitmo!

Invite one into your neighborhood, and let him bring all his relatives. Elect one to Parliament or Congress. Hell, make one President.

Can't we all just get along?

Shooting at wolves will make them more desperate, he predicted. "They become far more likely to go into towns, to frequent trails, to become problem wolves," he said.

That is the most pile of BS, I have ever heard. Wolves will always run from danger. They are not as stupid as environmentalists.

Where do I sign up for the cull?

Of course I will have to borrow a center fire rifle, as our family sold all of ours to avoid the gun registry fees, as an alternative to having them confiscated. Those rifles were used by my late father to provide our family food when times were tough, so they had sentimental as well as intrinsic value. But nobody pays you for sentimental value.

"Shooting at wolves will make them more desperate ... They become far more likely to go into towns, to frequent trails, to become problem wolves"

This has got to be the guano quote of the year. Thanks for the laugh though.

And T, to be honest, I'd love nothing better than a job being the shooter, FPS at its best. Too bad for the wolves there's no respawn.

"Shooting at wolves will make them more desperate"

Yes. What they need is more community basketball courts, family therapy and to be part of a more inclusive Alaskan community that can get to the root cause of their need to eat human flesh rather than demonize them and simply feed the Little Red Riding Jihood myth that Sarah Palin, George W Bush and Darth Haliburton McCheney have created.

For crying out loud T! This is animal population control not sport. Good grief man get a grip on reality.

With that said PID (Personal Isolation Devices ie iPods, Zunes , MP4s etc) are becoming more and more prominent in these types of situations, also in urban settings where for example in Vancouver people were targeted for their iPods and the fact you can walk right up and hit someone on the head while they are in the cone of isolation created by this devices.

I am not saying there should be a law, it is about personal responsibility, but there should be some social reinforcement of the hazards of being unaware of your surroundings, situation and potential for danger.

How is going for a run, unarmed, by herself, in a wild predator laden land, any different than the woman who climbed into the polar bear pool a couple of weeks ago? Why are the comments so arrogantly biased against the wolves for doing what wolves do?
This isn't Central Park they're talking about, and this isn't an inner city gang.
Wolves are at the top of the food chain, unless you throw guns into the formula.

We used to keep wolves in rooms. We got them when they were small but they do tend to grow. Someone would have to go in to feed, clean the room and collect samples. No cages. One guy that came in on the weekends was a fairly large man. He got nervous in a room with a wolf that jumped over him.
Anyway that is the background. We had an employee that was deathly afraid the wolves would escape and eat her. One day someone that shall remain nameless brought in a coyote pelt and screamed "Their coming through the wall!!", clutched the pelt to his throat and backed through his door. We could hear the scream throughout the facility.

When I was a young child we were out playing tag near the forest edge. I ran into the woods, pushed a branch aside and was staring into the face of a rather large wolf.

I think the wolf was just about as scared as I was, and I hightailed it home pretty damn quick about the same time the wolf turned and headed into the bush.

That was my single encounter of "Dances with Wolves".

Cheers

Utter BS!

Mark McNay compiled 80 events in Alaska and Canada where wolves closely approached or attacked people, finding 39 cases of aggression by apparently healthy wolves, and 29 cases of fearless behavior by non-aggressive wolves

// Sarah Palin, [...] when she was Alaskan governor nobody got eaten by wolves. //

The Alaska Wildlife Alliance. Is it an "expert" group studying wildlife or a bunch of know-nothing activists like PETA?

The Director is so out to lunch in his statement about animals becoming more aggressive when shot at. Perhaps he gained his "expertise" studying urban youth gang animals, who DO become aggressive when shot at. Nothing he says has any credibility.

As anyone who lives outside urban areas knows, humans with guns scare animals away.

I've lived out in the wilds many times, and the only animals that came into the immediate area of the house were deer and coyotes, and as soon as they realized there was someone home, never came back.

On my brother's trapline in Northern B.C., wildlife will walk right by the cabin when he's not there, but as soon as he moves back in for trapping, and they smell the smoke from the stove, not a one to be seen anywhere near the place.

I'll mention this article to him, and maybe he won't have to go look for the animals anymore, just fire a few shots at them and go back to his cabin to await their arrival.

I wish someone would draw up a pie chart or a graph or something detailing when Sarah Palin says something, it is trashed by the media and then is proven unequivocally right.
I think wolves are beautiful animals and sport hunting is a waste. I also know that wild animals can't be tamed and will hunt humans. People have to get out of this Disneyland mentality and realise wild animals aren't cuddly.
Just my thoughts.

On vacation in Hawaii,a woman was attacked and killed by a Tiger shark. The report went on to say how the woman was an avid outdoors person and that she'd swam for years in the same waters enjoying her morning laps. The only missing equation between this and the wolf story is the iPod.

Interesting outburst. Touret's like in its bursty-ness, yet retaining the straw-man like quality of the highest grade Obamaosity. Clearly a shriek of outrage ripped from the bleeding heart of Someone Who Really Cares.

This is because troll doesn't know how hard it is to hit a moving wolf from a moving aircraft. Or know the difference between sport hunting and eliminating a man-eating pack of carnivores.

This should be an Olympic sport!

Also let us recall that humans are top predator in this world because we have spears, arrows, swords, knives, guns and etc. and we hunt in -groups-. Unarmed human alone caught by wolves is LUNCH. Lone armed human, wolves get to be lunch. Or lunch and a nice throw rug.

One and only reason why humans get caught unarmed by wolves? Liberalism. Either they are disarmed by Liberal laws, or they are Liberal themselves.

My first guess would be that some enviro-sh**head or some other similar type of reckless idiot has been feeding or otherwise removing the pack's natural inclination to retreat or show great caution when humans show up in the area.

Remember all those profound BS statments about there being no records of wolves attacking humans.
Peter and the wolf and Little Red Riding Hood were based upon reality and real events.
Prior to the introduction of firearms whole villages would be destroyed by wolf attacks in Eastern Europe.
Here in Ontario, we are up to our whazzos in coyotes....but the clever folk in the GTA veto a bounty.
Years past the lads used to do "jack drives" now they set out Saturdays to hunt coyotes.
One local party, using such ordinance as mini-14's in .223 have bagged about 40 this winter another group using shotguns has brought down 20+.
No detectable/apparent decline in coyote sightings though.

Best comment of the day.

Shooting wolves from a plane is not sport. Nor is gunning down people on the street. The AB gov't culled 1000's of deer a couple of years ago using a helicopter in an attempt to stop the spread of CWD. This is not sport hunting and it is disingenuous to suggest it is. The more wolves are habituated to humans the more likely they are to attack. The best thing for wolves to have is a healthy fear of humans. One way to ensure that they continue to fear us is to hunt them. Wolves are not endangered unless you consider downtown Toronto, Calgary or Vancouver as habitate.

I went back to that first link and watched a bit of that Matt Damen video....
He styles Palin's nomination for VP as absurd.....
Watching that video I concluded that anyone heeding Damen's opinion is absurd.
The goof starts by saying he knows nothing about her that proceeds to be critical.
I'd like somebody to interview him now as to OBOZO's experience---especially in the WH.
Ronald Reagan he's not......

Shooting wolves is not sport but predator control.
Sarah Palin did mention the importance of
predator control in regard to maintaining a solid
moose population (itself a good idea in that
beef is expensive to import, and human beings
don't live very well on a diet of wild berries,
leaves, and grasses). And now we have a case of
wolves killing a human being.

The word gets around the more intelligent animals -
human beings are easy prey.

sasquatch: "Peter and the wolf and Little Red Riding Hood were based upon reality and real events.

The situation in Russia where the Peter and the Wolf story comes from was the result of perfect gun control. One writer (can't find the link) studied the records and could not understand the three thousand or so deaths a year due to wolf attack in Russia and none in North America.
Russia did not allow the ownership of guns. The nobility tried organized wolf hunts but that only worked for a brief spell after the hunt. In NA the wolf and bear were respectful of the human as a superior predator and acted accordingly.
As a child living in a rural area, I wandered at length over hill and dale and never saw a bear. Only once saw a coyote; from a distance. I can't remember anyone ever expressing a longing to see one. They were not missed.
That would never make sense to PETA.

When I lived in the bush, it was stated to us on arrival that bears and wolves were a particular risk to pre-menopausal women who went out at the wrong time of the month. The last attack I recall reported was also a young woman, but she was taken out be a bear, not wolves. There is a time and place to go hiking or jogging alone - especially for younger females. I guess it's not politically correct to issue a gender-specific warning.

Last week had to drive pass the Tsuu Tina First Nation on the 37th Street Extension, South of Anderson in Calgary - saw 2 very, very large healthy coyotes racing beside the fence - can they ever move fast - did I mention they were big and healthy (most be the suburban dog diet!D) - was really happy the fence was in place. So I can imagine what a big healthy wolf pack would look like. Yikes!!

How long before it happens in Toronto?
Cute coyote really...but Toronto has enough trouble with humans killing humans.
The coyotes have taken on a few dogs.

"Ms Berner's father, Bob Berner, told the Anchorage Daily News that his daughter ........ was listening to her iPod while taking a late afternoon run and was unlikely to have noticed that she was being stalked."

IIRC the same occurred about a half dozen years ago at a military base in Quebec where a biathlete in summer training was killed by a black bear. The lady was listening to an iPod as well.

Sasquatch @6:29 - I also watched Matt Damon, going on about how ludicrously unqualified Palin is; unlike, you know, that super-experienced genius he voted for. Speaking of which: Wolves can eat me now, if they want. Obamacare lives.

I have seen a coyote in Varsity Estates in Calgary and as far in as the SAIT campus.

plugged one with a shotgun near Hays one year. kind of felt like I had shot someones dog after.

Fatal means the attacked person died. I didn't see that anywhere in your PDF.

PETA "People Eating Tasty Animals"

Putting 2+2=5, from the prior posts, if "little red riding hood" is based on real events, and women at a certain period (pun intended) of the month are more likely to be attacked by wolves and bears, could it be that wild animals attack women who are menstruating?
(Little red riding hood= you can figure that one out.)
And no I don't want my tax dollars spent on researching the issue.

The Dad's comments are honest and refreshing. The daugher set herself up for a Darwinian culling by running in an isolated area listening to an mpg player. As a local, she was well aware of the dangers.

Walking the dog on an isolated bike trail in civilized western Iowa, the Zune stays home. Just a breeze in the trees makes hearing difficult. One needs eyes AND ears to be aware of bikes coming at you doing 15 - 20 MPH. One suspects the wolves made much less noise than a bike on crushed limestone.

"How long before it happens in Toronto?"

That won't happen until the Coyotes wail a Bob Marley
tune and dine on the patrons of a jerk restaurant, where they will likely be mowed down since everyone inside will be packin' heat.

Ya mon.

When my younger brother was in the Forestry, he packed a 9ml. There was a fellow killed by a large black bear. So brother took no chances. Never used it but had it if he did. People wearing earphones can't hear cars or wolves apparently. If you're going to jog in the woods...pack a powerful gun. Oh and toss the ipod.
