Coulter On Campus

"I dunno. A camel?" . Shaidle was there.

I disagree with the majority of right leaning freespeechers on this point - I believe we need more of this. "Either what (Mr. Houle) did was a hate crime, or the whole commission is BS.”

Update: And another poll goes horribly wrong....

My Father just died suddenly, so I won't be there. This is just about the only thing that would keep me away.

Sorry to hear about your Father, Chris. My condolences.

You had to know that when Ann Coulter and Ezra Levant ended up in the same room, something like that was gonna get hatched! :-)

Great fun. Very tired. zzzzz

There is a poll that needs some input....

The question is
"Was the University of Ottawa right to warn Ann Coulter about the content of her speech tonight?

- Yes, she has made inflammatory comments in the past and should be encouraged to speak with civility and respect
- No, she can say whatever she wants and the university is demonstrating an anti-conservative bias"

http://www.cfra.com/?cat=1&nid=72047

The great thing about Ms Coulters visit is that it underscores the importance of free spreech. In Canada, however, it appears that only "liberal" free speech is acceptable to some. Is it that they are just afraid of hearing the truth out loud?

nnm asks "Is it that they are just afraid of hearing the truth out loud?"

No....it is that they are afraid that OTHERS will hear the truth out loud. "They" are too far gone to be able to see the truth and "they" become fretful when others are able to see it and "they" can't. Sort of like those old 3-D pictures that you had to stare at for a long time before the image would pop out at you.

I look forward to Ann Coulter's CHRC 'show trial'...

Ooohh, she said something nasty and wasn't very polite. You might not get invited to the cocktail circuit.

I look forward to Obersturmbahnfuhrer Jennifer Lynch handing out 'cease and desist orders' which will be neglected with carefree abandon...

How do you politely tell someone to send their ideas 'straight to Hell'?

While I don't agree with everything that Ann Coulter says, she can be as impolite and impudent as she wants to...or does everyone suddenly turn into gutless wonders afraid to speak their mind and become fearful souls in quiet desperation?

Real debate means having divergent views, not having a bunch of state apparatchiks monitoring what may or may not offend your ears.

I always thought that Americans smoked "Camels" rather than riding them.

Atric was there as well. She played to a full house. I was unsurprised at the number of young supporters in attendance as well as many females of all ages, which belied the myth that all conservatives are old white men.
Coulter was extremely entertaining and informative. Her detractors were ill-organized and barely out of their childhood. The "camel" comment was made for a reason which Coulter described later, however it seems to have escaped the media's attention.
I must also give kudos to Ezra Levant's presentation. While some feel he is too brash and
strident, he does know what he's talking about and his passion shows very clearly.
It was a great evening and was worth 100x more that what was charged.
Oh, and as a result of SDA, I was able to meet a fellow poster from Wasage Beach. Hi Eric!

Yep! Somebody should pin a tail on that Houle fella...and that Seamus.....living proof that Police do show restraint.

Ann Coulter, the left's very own personal "fingernails on the blackboard".

Another poll for you to respond to. This one at the Globe and Mail.

"Do you think the University of Ottawa provost was right to caution Ann Coulter in advance of what she might say?"

As Ann herself said, "The truth cannot be administered with novocaine." That's what riles the left up so much.

As someone noted on a link, the Houles and Lynches of this PC nonsense would never go after Coulter, she's an American lawyer with considerable resources available, not some kid sitting in mom's basement pondering the marketability of all day pajamas,no offense T.

The interesting thing is the illogical nature of the HRC 'hate speech' rule. It's been noted many times already.

Genuine hate speech, the criminal kind, which is article 318 (genocide), 319 (public incitement of hatred),requires that a 'likely' breach of the peace occur as a direct result. This link is difficult to prove. Furthermore, a basic defense is if the statements are true, and, if the statements are a subject of public interest and debate. Therefore, under the criminal code, it is very difficult to prove 'hate speech'.

Under the HRC rule, however, 'hate speech' is whatever the tribunal subjectively thinks it is. That's because the required link between words and resultant action has been totally removed. The HRC Section 13, again, says that the speech "is likely to expose a person or persons to hatred or contempt". Whew.

Notice that the breach of peace requirement doesn't exist in the HRlaw. This means that the focus is not on a link between your words and a violent action against someone. The focus is on, not what actually happens, but what 'is likely to happen'. Heck - who knows the future?

And, the focus is not an actual experience of 'being hated' or 'being viewed with contempt'. No, the focus is only on 'it might happen'. Who knows the future?
And who can state that the reason why X person is 'viewed with contempt' is due to your speech, or due to their own stupid speech, or due to someone else's speech? Only the HR commission people know. Heh.

So, the vice-provost of Ottawa U was out of bounds in his patronizing 'advice', and Coulter is right to challenge our HRCs. They'll dismiss it because she's not 'an identifiable group'.

You see, in Canada, you can only be hated or viewed with contempt if you are a member of an 'identifiable minority group'. If you are an individual who speaks on various issues, and is hated for these words, it's OK for someone and especially a member of a minority group to personally attack and smear you. That's not hate speech...because the definition of 'hate speech' is linked not to the actual words said, but to membership in a minority group.

This is fun... watching the Left send its young, know-no-better, brainwashed purple-shirters to badger the scary rightie... so cliche.

The Big Media is using headlines to make Ann sound like some kind of a monster, whereas they never do this when Obama says nastier stuff about various identifiable groups, such as Special Olympians...

Again the Big Media proves its biases.

Ann Coulter says to charge him with a hate crime.
That's not enough.

We need to remove from power,ANY kind of power, the anti-freedom likes of Francois Houle.

Funny how the same sort of people were upset that the Ontario legislature was pushing a motion to condemn "Israel Arpatheid Week". They called it an erosion of free speech.

Ann Coulter can stir up the lefties simply by using intelligent comment and wit. The lefties almost always have to resort to obscenity to offend their opponents. They come across as children who have just learned that adults can be shocked by their use of foul language.

Why does the young Muslim student (at the Ann Coulter talk) get any sympathy? She came to be offended and she was. She got what she wanted. She tried a pre-meditated ‘gotcha’ and Ann didn’t go for it. She researched one of Ann’s past comments and asked a question about it in order to trap Ann into making an inflammatory comment. The Muslim girl didn’t have a question about the speech. She wasn’t interested in the speech. How was Ann supposed to answer her question in that forum? Was Ann supposed to provide all of the context for her past comments? The student obviously wasn’t interested in hearing Ann’s explanation.

If my memory serves, the student asked a two-part question: the fist about Christians evangelizing Arab countries and the second about Muslim forms of transportation. Ann answered the first part well by describing Christian missions to Japan and South Korea. The second part was just a joke and didn’t deserve an answer. The student didn’t really want an answer anyway. She wanted to be offended and, after the student crowd demanded it (was that the only reason they attended?), Ann obliged with the Camel crack.

That Muslim student came to be offended. She came to provoke Ann with a question that had nothing to do with the speech. What about the moral issue of wasting everyone else’s time? How was it fair to the rest of the audience who had legitimate questions that couldn’t be asked? Instead, the Q&A time was occupied with people trying to score debating points or trying to provoke Ann into making a wise-crack so that they could complain to Francois Houle about how divisive and hate-filled Ann Coulter is.

>>they never do this when Obama says nastier stuff about various identifiable groups, such as Special Olympians...

A few years ago the feminazis were bleating that 'All men are potential rapists'. The only response that I remember from the MSM and the usual suspects in academia were objection to the use of the word 'feminazi'. Try to make the statement that all muslims are potential terrorists and see how they respond to that.

John Luft, thanks for the vote link @ 11:10. The poll is going badly for the left.

Conservatives are Guilty by Association!!

Ann Coulter attacks Gays & Muslims; Tories attack Medical Doctor.
Jane Taber G&M mar23/2010

Also see Power Play for the NDP take on Coulter visit

NDP MP literaly complains conservatives allowed coulter but would not allow British MP Galloway.

Yes, there are times when I wish I lived in the tri-city area.

Well this is interesting.

"Ann Coulter attacks gays and Muslims; Tories attack medical doctor"

Giggles Taber has an article about Ann coulter, but what interests me is her second part, 'Tories attack Medical Doctor'.

Who is this MD? Why, it's Liberal MP, Carolyn Bennett. What medical issue was she authoritatively speaking on, using her expertise as a medical doctor? Why, Universal Child Care, of course.

Huh?

Could Taber have picked a more (intentionally?) misleading headline for her story? Bennett might be an M.D. but the issue she was speaking on was political, not medical. Taber's headline leads you to believe the Tories are going after an M.D. in the community, not criticizing a member of another political party, as legitimate political discourse, for her stance on a certain policy issue.

Shaidle gets it. We have freedom of speech in this country. We've always had it. What we don't have, is freedom from the consequences arising from one's speech. No one has done a better job of pointing this out than Kathy has.

Free speech is a value proposition. What are you willing to give up in exchange for exercising it? Kathy is obviously willing to give up a lot, which also makes her rather brave. Her gender notwithstanding, you can bet that Kathy is usually the one with the biggest set of balls in any room she happens to be standing in, no matter the number of males present.

While I don't think that conservatives should slither into the gutter with Saul Alinsky's fans - they wouldn't be conservatives if they did - this HRC complaint being filed by Ann Coulter (what fun to type!) is theater designed to hold the Thought Police up to the ridicule they so badly deserve.

I would have preferred it if she'd been charged (or however they put it), because then the "case" might actually have gone to court (or whatever they call it). But this will do just fine.

Moron though he is it's too bad Galloway was banned...what's good for the goose is good for the gander. It just seems chicken sh*t to me.

re: poll question on 580 CFRA

It's worded incorrectly, the Provost letter doesn't show an anti-conservative bias. It shows a rejection of mainstream common sense and the right to express oneself freely.

"Is it that they are just afraid of hearing the truth out loud?"

John Luft makes a good point about the left not wanting others to hear the truth out loud. What better way to conceal the fact that right-wing crazies have valid arguments. Allowing conservatives to speak freely or without the MSM filter reveals the progressives as intolerant and full of it. There is no way liberals can allow the public to find out that "Ann Coulter is one of the most gracious, witty, interesting and original I’ve had the privilege to meet." So substandard journalists like Jane Taber will now have to spend a week or so typing poorly written, poorly researched hit pieces. On the bright side, it gives readers of the CBC and Globe a rest from poorly written, poorly researched climate change articles.

I am not sure if Taber or any other columnist writes their own headlines.

I cannot help but think of Sunera Thobani, her spewing of bile against G.W. Bush, and her BACKING by the university where she was an associate professor. Free speech works both ways.

Galloway was banned because of his ties ( and aid to ) terrorist organizations that are banned in Canada, not his words..

the poll at the top of the page is still open but the one at the mop and pail is closed already! they have yes at 52% and no at 48%, whereas the one at the top has yes currently at 22% and no at 75%.

As to whether or not Coulter should file a complaint, I would argue not to do so, on the grounds that any use of the unconstitutional court is in some way a recognition of its right to exist.

However, in the real world, such a stunt will bring a certain amount of publicity, I suppose, although largely among those who already get the issue.

The outcome will certainly be to blow off the complaint, so I'm not sure what is actually gained. Otherwise, of course, the tour is a great idea, but details are important and two wrongs don't make a right even in this instance.

Ann Coulter's HRC complain is up on Drudge.

I wonder how things are going in the main office up at U of Ottawa today? Busy answering the phone, maybe?

I think that using the HRCs to go after Liberals is a great idea... providing somebody with the power to make them do the work is kicking them in the ass every single morning.

Like the PMO's office. [HINT, HINT, HINT Mr. Harper, sir!!!]

If HRCs are compelled by a higher authority to address ALL complaints, then they will very quickly become a problem for the hatefilled, wrath spewing Lefties out there and Lefty hacks will begin working to shut them down.

Otherwise filing complaints is just waste motion. They will continue their current practice of cherry picking complaints to attack conservatives, Christians, and anyone else they feel needs quelling.

Letter to M. Houle, francois.houle@uottawa.ca

Dear M. Houle,

If your intent was to make some kind of a name for yourself by sending off that silly little letter to Ann Coulter, you can rest assured that your goal was accomplished. From this day forward, whenever you have occasion to sign your name, after your many degrees and honours you may append the letters H.A. And, if you have some difficulty with the interpretation, get someone who values free speech to figure it out for you.

Jamie MacMaster

CTV's Tom Clark will have Coulter as a guest this evening on his Power Play program.
I will be disappointed if she doesn't rip CTV's little crypto-leftist a new one his own program.

>>Galloway was banned because of his ties ( and aid to ) terrorist organizations that are banned in Canada, not his words..

Exactly. He not only admitted it, but boasted about it. Funny how no one at CTV seems to know that, isn't it?

I sent an email to Houle yesterday saying the same thing. I hope she really goes through with it.

And when the CHRC "screening officer" turns her down, she might consider a mandamus application.

I find it funny when you always write about another poll going wrong. The poll question was not worded with any slant whatsoever. Asking if it 'went wrong' is like saying 'The sky went horribly wrong by being cloudy today'. It is just what it is.

As for free speech, I think Ann Coulter should be free to express her opinions up here however she wants. The more she speaks, the better it is for the left as she embarrasses even a good segment of moderate conservatives.

I see we're in the presence of another lefty expert on moderate Conservatism.

What's Krypto? How do you get away with your comments on this blog?

I am sorry about your father, Chris.

When we think of all the taxpayer-funded crap and then juxtapose it next to Ann Coulter, it balances out. If we can pay for the privilege of being offended, then we should be able to enjoy the refreshing sound of honesty no matter how caustic it may sound.
Just my thoughts.

My condolences to you and your family, Chris.

A snide comment to the hecklers is "stabbed through the heart." Gee, exaggerate much? I like Michael Coren's response to that.

I'm going to the Ottawa event last night. From the fireworks we've had in London already, I can't wait! Should be great to meet Anne at the book signing!

How did Ann explain her camel comment? I wasn't there to hear it.

This must be one of the joys of being a dog person. Sniffing out poles - er, polls "gone horribly wrong" seems to be so easy. I love it.

CBC has a pollup on Ms. Coulter's right to speak her mind. BTW,just watched her on Power Play, and she is the total package.---http://www.cbc.ca/news/pointofview/2010/03/ann-coulter.html

More Taber: Are you kidding me???

"Tories oppose ‘anti-American’ motion
on family planning"
"Michael Ignatieff’s Liberals wanted to debate maternal health in developing countries today. Instead, they are defending themselves against Conservative charges of being anti-American."

Does this woman get paid by the LPC?

Funny how I didn't see this article from Taber when the Tories introduced their motion:

"Stephen Harper's Conservatives wanted to debate maternal health in developing countries today. Instead, they are defending themselves against Liberal charges of being anti-Abortion and Anti-Woman."

What a crock!!

'Tempest in a bloody teapot because the leftards are such cry babies.

I've written to Houle to tell him what a jerk he is -- I didn't quite put it that way but I hope that with all of his post-secondary degrees, he can read between the lines.

The fact that our knee-jerk liberal-left MSM and snot-nosed academics are piling on Ann Coulter goes to show what a pc cesspool we're living in here in Canada.

My father and grandfathers, who fought in WWI and WWII for all of the freedoms we enjoy in this country, are rolling over in their graves.

I'm very sorry, Chris, for your loss.
