1. The Institute is concerned that, unless the disclosed e-mails are proved to be forgeries or adaptations, worrying implications arise for the integrity of scientific research in this field and for the credibility of the scientific method as practised in this context.
2. The CRU e-mails as published on the internet provide prima facie evidence of determined and co-ordinated refusals to comply with honourable scientific traditions and freedom of information law. The principle that scientists should be willing to expose their ideas and results to independent testing and replication by others, which requires the open exchange of data, procedures and materials, is vital. The lack of compliance has been confirmed by the findings of the Information Commissioner. This extends well beyond the CRU itself - most of the e-mails were exchanged with researchers in a number of other international institutions who are also involved in the formulation of the IPCC's conclusions on climate change.
Finally, a scientific discipline enters the Climategate fray with a bang. (Others, whimper.)
Related: The university at the centre of the climate change row over stolen e-mails has been accused of making a misleading statement to Parliament.

By "scientific discipline" do you mean Criminology?
Oh what tangled webs we weave, when first we set out to deceive...How much more proof do our Governments need?
Slamming the Goreacle and NYT at the same time? PRICELESS:

Whatever happened to John Cross, did he float away on a calving iceberg?
There goes the "scientific consensus", and thank
God for that! IOP journals are good. I've done a
a little refereeing for them. Needless to say,
there was never any pressure to toe a party line,
of any sort.
Now we need the editor of "Nature" to resign ...
Direct hit! It just doesn't get better than that. I sincerely hope there's more to follow. It seems the Brits, the public in particular, are getting increasingly fed up with the BS.
Now if the MSM can open its collective eyes, take its fingers out of its ears and quit singing "la, la, la, I can't hear you" . . .
It's sad, but this probably has caused a rather dramatic reduction in public trust in all scientists in all fields of endeavour, not just climatology. I expect it will take the better part of a generation for that trust to be restored (more accurately, re-earned).
"It's sad, but this probably has caused a rather dramatic reduction in public trust in all scientists in all fields of endeavour, not just climatology."
Of course, if we had had more scientists and fewer scienticians, that might help too.
It's a sad day when even Scientology appears more credible than Climatology.
"No one really believes that the “science is settled” or that “the debate is over.” Scientists and others that say this seem to want to advance a particular agenda. There is nothing more detrimental to public trust than such statements."
Gore,Suzuki, and quite few politicians need to realize that fact.
Mr.Prentice?
The link I saw via an Ace of Spades commenter was only a brief report so I won't bother with a link, but a couple in Argentina were in a murder-suicide pact because of their fear of global warming. The young daughter has survived a gunshot to the chest. I think they're still searching for the parents.
All the things 'science' has saved us from would be quite a list:
Global Cooling
Global Warming
The deteriorating Ozone layer
Acid Rain
Mad Cow/BSE
All the diseases and conditions that we now 'need' prescription medicine for or 'we's all gonna die'
First hand smoke
Second hand smoke
Butter
Margarine
Aids
DDT
and on and on and on
Everyone of these is a 'chicken little' cry and we keep on buying it because 'if but one life can be saved'
"WASHINGTON, Jan. 25— After examining climate data extending back nearly 100 years, a team of Government scientists has concluded that there has been no significant change in average temperatures or rainfall in the United States over that entire period.
While the nation’s weather in individual years or even for periods of years has been hotter or cooler and drier or wetter than in other periods, the new study shows that over the last century there has been no trend in one direction or another.
The study, made by scientists for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration was published in the current issue of Geophysical Research Letters. It is based on temperature and precipitation readings taken at weather stations around the country from 1895 to 1987. "
That was NOAA in 1989. Then they realized they could jump on the Fame & Gravy Train if they jsut lied "a bit" and made everything vewy, vewy, scawy.
Presto magico . . . the Global Warming Thingy . . . .
The scientific community had all better get out there and tell us where they stand on this outrageous attempt to hijack the world with phony science and the scaring of children.
Scientists are rapidly morphing into side show sorcerers fit to do magic tricks with beakers and test tubes and little more.
It is the engineers who are at the breaking edges of science these days. They offer a more practical approach to making shit happen to enrich and better our lives not force us into caves and tents while killing baby lambs on the Altar of Global Warming.
What was that very first commandment again? Something about not having false gods before us?
Well the global warming god, Al Gore is as false a Joe Biden's hairline, Pamela Anderson's tits, Barack Obama's credentials, Wrestling, MSM unbiased reporting etc.
We want scientists not political scientists.
andycanuck - It gets worse. They killed their 2 year-old son and the 7 month-old girl wasn't discovered for 3 days.

"The Audacity of Caution
Dr. Jack Kruuv, Professor Emeritus of Physics at the University of Waterloo has a few choice words for Maxime Bernier in today’s Waterloo Region Record:
“Politicians should keep their trap shut, when they don’t know what they are talking about.”
And since politicians represent the people that elect them, then by extension he is telling us to keep our traps shut. So much for open debate in Canadian taxpayer-supported universities.
This is the kind of attitude that we’re up against.
Have at it, BLY nation."

Perhaps Professor Kruuv might consider taking his own advice.
'Education' funding must be drastically cut in order for the system to focus on actual education instead of a naked grab for more power. Frivolous 'research' conducted by people who have no understanding of what it is they are supposed to be doing must be eliminated, such fantasies are only excessive noise.
Nice to see the IOP to weigh with some real scientific rigour.
What the East Anglia Pirate CRU had been purveying as science would more accurately describe 'rape, pillage, and plunder' of the taxpayer.
Real science is authentically vetted science that stands critique in the light of day. The Pirate CRU tried to systematically circumvent the independent vetting of their results, data and methodologies.
In short, the Pirate CRU tried to do an end run on the theory's falsifiability.
Bad scientician, bad scientician...sit.
Fetch data...

I suspect that this type of political manipulation of science research has been going on in other areas and led to the passing of all sorts of laws and regulations that curtail our freedoms.
It gets sweeter every day watching these con men exposed for the tools they are.

I share your sentiments, Revnant Dream @6:20! Watching them squirm is delightful and great fun! Thanks for the link to the girly hissy fit "Gore not a Bull, mayabe a steer, acts like a cow" article; ron in kelowna.
great comments everyone.
