The advent of a right-wing challenger to Canada's longest serving dynasty is more than just a political junkie's once-in-a-lifetime dream come true.
More like the mainstream conservative remedy to the Liberals who have taken over their former party from the inside. But the rest of the column is still quite good.

Ed Stelmach spoke at the opening ceremonies of the AB Winter Games, on Thursday, in Bonnyville. He did not get a warm reception, in fact, he was treated with disrespect. I didn't hear a single positive comment from anyone I spoke to, after the speech.
It looks like the times are changing.
A useful reminder regarding ALL politicians of ALL parties is to watch what they do, not what they say.
Funny how people who believe in realistic fiscal policies, i.e. living within our means, are labeled as "extreme right wingers", while those who practice profligate spending, massive borrowing and deficits are called "mainstream".
After Chantal's performance last week on the CBC's panel, she'd better notice Canada's political sands are shifting.
Alberta and B.C.'s combined population is just about equal to Quebec's in the 2006 census and seat redistribution is right around the corner.
The West, including Saskatchewan, has been screwed over by Quebec long enough.
Ontario may be arrogant, but at least they put down more than their share of cash to keep Canada together.
Hebert is the only columnist in the Star that is worth reading.
Chantal pens pieces that are usually worth the read - especially when she avoids referring to (rigged?) media polls.
I agree that Ms Hebert is one of few MSM who is worth watching. I think that Quebec is being sent a wake up call. You might have to start paying for all your expensive spending habits yourself. Equalization has only worked for Quebec, it seems they think they are special and the rest of Canada needs to acknowledge this and to pony up the cash to keep them in their unique little world. The fall should be fun to watch.
Quebec's disproportionate influence on federal politics will begin to end once new MP's are added to Parliament (2011?). After that, national parties will no longer need to shamelessly buy Quebec votes. I'm sure losing the limelight will be tough for the prima donna of Canada but it's good for the ROC. The country may finally be able to move on and discus issues without being overly concerned whether it will offend Quebec.
Hopefully the CPC will not call an election until after the seat distribution. I have no doubt that the BQ would love to horse trade an eternally fixed Quebec MP percentage (regardless of provincial population) for supporting a LPC/NDP coalition. I remember that trade off rumor floating around during the Dion coalition attempt.
"We're frankly cleaning up a program that was badly structured and badly created by the Liberals back when they were in government," Moore said."
The "program" referred to was the honeypot/well of the Iffy Liberal Ad$Cam Party of Jeancula Chretien, MartinJr, Citoyen Dionky, et al.
...-
"Quebec's disproportionate share of Canada Day funding to end"
"He [Minister Moore] said the government would also introduce a formula that allows each province and territory to get its fair share of funding based on population."

Is it just me, or does Chantal Hebert closely ressemble a transgendered former Montreal stevedore named Chuck?
NOT that there's anything wrong with that ... I'm just sayin'
In the words of Mao Stlong ... that an oldy stoly.
Like Aberhart, Lougheed and the Mannings, Danielle Smith is a transitional figure.
As with all of the aforementioned, Smith represents a renewed image of the province that is reflected in the values of the majority of the Albertans.
In Stelmach we see everything we oppose.
Unless Ted Morton is able to bring the two entities together, the time is up for the PCs.
Either way, Danielle Smith will be our next premier.
Chantal lives in the far east, consequently she probably did not notice that the Yukon elected the first woman premier, a Conservative turned Liberano named Pat Duncan.
The Wildrose party, unlike the Liberano Party is not all about a gender/race, it is all about ideas/policies/prosperity. The msm don't understand ideas so they make it all about emotion and, they hope, $$ for themselves. I believe Danille would agree with me, if she does not, I certainly would not consider supporting her or the Wildrose Party.
seat redistribution cannot come fast enough - the two largest provinces have slagged the west long enough
Liberal Senator Keith Davies...the long time "rain maker" Liberal campaign manager was sidelined by John Turner....who promptly lost the election....
"Canadian voters are not stupid. Presented with the choice of two conservative parties---vote for the real one."
Good for Danielle. Hopefully this movement catches on in the other western provinces. It is time to end the colonial status.
byng is right. Seat redistribution can't come fast enough.
It is also time to privatize the CBC and give farmers a choice on how to sell their wheat.
It may be just me, but when I look at provincial politics it seems like an 80's party. Wildrose Alliance is making 20+ year leap ahead.
Sadly, Ted Morton and his boss are just a pair of mouth pieces. There hasn't been anything creative come out of Edmonton in a long time. The big media news story of the year in Calgary this year is that the Conservatives are in discussions with the City about plans for a SW ring road. I actually think this was a 1977 story that they ran again because there isn't anything constructive going on. This story edged out the bullet train by a small margin. One has to hope that Danielle gets a chance to start us on the road to a better place.
I figure the west might as well get out now, before the next inevitable Trudeau.
Ontario people just can't help themselves, they think they have to baby-sit western Canada because how could we possibly be as smart as them? We didn't make a conscious decision to live near Toronto.
That's actually the answer to their question.

No looks like the "two ladies" in Little Britain
Chantal Hebert says, "Ontario – with its larger population, its
centrist culture and its greater proximity to the federal capital –
could more easily have stepped into the breach."
But that is not going to happen, because Ontario has been rotted
out by leftism (a.k.a. "centrist culture"). I was recently chatting with a friend from Sudbury,
who commented that Newfoundland is booming (for Newfoundland), and that Ontario was in a mess,
with bad government at every level - leftist government, need I add?
Ontario was strong, economically and socially, under a strong Conservative government.
But Bill Davis's Tories headed leftward, and were succeeded by God knows what.
Mike Harris provided a halt in the decline, which proved
momentary. And now the Ontarioans are stuck with Rat-Face Al McGuinty.
The first elected woman premier was Catherine Calbeck, Prince Edward Island, 1993.
and we all await the tossing of the Liberal Party that has infested the Conservative Party
I'm not surprised. Politicians must heed their electorate. If the electorate feels disenfranchised, they will go elsewhere. Fickle, perhaps, but that is the nature of the beast, so they say.
The Liberals have never represented Canadians. People tired of their crap will gladly seek someone else.
Just my thoughts.
Sorry Jack, just proves that I am lazy like Chantal. I should have checked....Pat was elected in 2000, she did not last long because of in fighting but she was 10 times better than the Dipper turned Conservative (but still a Dipper) that the Yukon people elected last trip to the polls.
Patty never lost her common sense and her radical MP's revolted - she had a majority for about 4 months, then she sidelined he friends in favor of appeasing her not friends - kinda like a certain fella in Sask. See Kate's quote at the top of the page to do with pleasing enemies.
while those who practice profligate spending, massive borrowing and deficits are called "mainstream".
~Fred
A very sad fact of the times we live in is that these people are main stream.
That said, maybe we can galvanize the new generation to come out and buck the establishment.
Borrowing and spending like there is no tomorrow should be opposed by the people who are going to be living, tomorrow.
Here is my slogan for the Youth Revolt:
-"To Those Who Would Bury Us in Debt, I KNOW WHICH END OF THE SHOVEL I'M ON!
Time for Your Dirt Nap, Old Socialists!-
winning in PEI is like winning a small town , it just doesnt matter. most ridings are larger than PEI.
West Edmonton Mall on a busy day has a bigger population than PEI.
Liberal-socialist Iffy whams into a socialist snow fence.

“Federal New Democrats poke fun at Michael Ignatieff attending Olympics
By Charlie Smith
Vancouver civic politicians have learned that their constituents don’t like them attending Olympic events on the taxpayers’ dime. From what I’ve heard, their e-mail in-boxes are full of complaints.
Now, the federal New Democrats are exploiting this issue by highlighting how federal Liberals will be attending the 2010 Games rather than “working” on Parliament Hill.
Last week, NDP Leader Jack Layton said he would be watching the Olympics on television as he copes with prostate cancer.
In a “reality check” released today, the NDP accused the federal Grits of taking advantage of “Olympic junkets”.
Below is a copy of the NDP news release:
REALITY CHECK: Ignatieff snags flip-flop gold. Tough-talking Liberals fleeing Hill for Olympic junkets
From the curling rink to the athletes’ village, Ignatieff and the Liberal team will be abandoning their post on Parliament Hill to make the scene at Olympic venues:
“Leader Michael Ignatieff will use the special pass put at his disposal to be present for about three days at the start of the Games and again toward the end. But he will ‘not be running after the cameras,’ a party official said.” – Globe and Mail, 5 February 2009
“An email mysteriously arrived in my inbox showing that [Liberal] MP Joyce Murray requested 10 distinguished guest passes and five upgraded access passes for the Games ‘so that Liberal parliamentarians can have some representation’ at the events.” – Don Martin, National Post, 4 February 2010.
Liberals sure are excited! But hold on one one-hundredth-of-a-second.
Wasn’t it only four weeks ago, as the public outcry against Harper’s prorogation was picking up, that Michael Ignatieff sternly boasted to the press that every Liberal MP would be channeling Canadians’ outrage into hard work in Ottawa – right through the Olympics?
“ ‘We will be working, in other words, right through the Olympics, which is what we think Canadians want to see,’ he said. When asked if he truly expected all Liberal politicians to be in Ottawa throughout prorogation, Mr. Ignatieff replied: ‘We don’t play half team. We all show up. And we are not just showing up for a photo op. We are showing up to go to work’.” – Michael Ignatieff as quoted in the Globe and Mail, 8 January 2010
If Liberals intended to go to the Olympics, why did Michael Ignatieff say they would be “showing up to work” in Ottawa?”

Tomorrow's ab budget will be either a turning point for the PCs (they don't use the word "Conservative" on their website last time I checked abour four months ago) or a point of departure for even more MPs looking to save their political skins and move to the WP.
I suspect the latter if the budget is what I hear it is - a milquetoast attempt a conservative fiscal policy. It seems Stelmach and company haven't the heart to make the cuts.
With all do respect, I personally don't have a lot of respect for Hebert or anyone in the MSM. To me their all a pack of Trudeauvian cultists who cannot be trusted to tell the truth about anything. As a British Columbian I only wish we had a party like the WRA, but having one in Alberta is the next best thing and I hope they're successful and that that success carries over to B.C. and Sask. and even Manitoba. Opening talks on welfare for Quebec (Equalization) must be sending shivers down the spine of every Trudeauvian cultist in Ontario and Quebec, and that is a good thing.
If Ted Morton rises, then Wildrose falters. After all, if you poll the majority of us who joined/ voted Wildrose, you will find 95% are/were discontented Morton supporters.
If Morton gets a hold of the leadership of the PC party, then all bets are off with the Wildrose, in my opinion. Of course, some of this will depend on what Morton can accomplish over the next few years.
now is the winter of our discontent made glorious summer.
this is what Alberta gets for putting in the third choice on the same weekend the lieberals put in Borat Dion as third choice , the lieberals were smart enough to punt him. the PCs in Alberta seem to be entirely disconnected. they gave special Ed a bigger vote of confidence than King Ralph.
Re: seat redistribution. This will mean more MP's, an expensive proposition in more ways than one. If liberals like cap and trade, lets do it in a useful way - with MP's.
So Iggy's going to the Olympics for three days? Perhaps he's going to hedge his bets and spend a day with each of his favorite athletes: Americans, British, then Canadians.
Read your history, kiddies.Quebec is part of Canada,ONLY becasue the Brits let them stay.As somebody noted here earlier, the Monarchy should be in a zoo, showing their butts like the monkeys and inbreds they are.
Aizlynne;if Ted Morton still owns a brain he will resign and join the WRAP, he is not going to 'save' the PCs, he might as well save himself! Ted would be wise to cast his eyes north to the Yukon; our present Premier was a Dipper a few years ago , he jumped the aisle to the Yukon (PC) Party and with a gaggle of supporters, took over the Conservative Leadership meeting (only about 10 real Conservatives showed up; I was one so I saw what happened first hand). There was one Yukon Party M.P. at the time, the member from the Klondike (the only riding that had residents who produced something, they were still mining for Gold at that time); Mr. Fentie played a game and he won two elections. Fentie made himself Min of Finance and then sold ATCO Energy (Alta) his share of the bill in return for ATCO owning the Yukon part of future energy produced by the Federal/Yukon Mayo Hydro project. Fentie did not share his deal making with the PC members of his own party; he was caught and only one PC M.P. was honorable enough to quit (the Min of Mines and Energy, Mr. Brad Cathers). Brad now sits as an independent. Fentie had lost his majority for a few days and his days as Premier looked numbered but; low and behold, one day one of his former pals, sitting as a Dipper, crossed the floor and joined the PCs in exchange for the Energy portfolio. The PC MP's who had stayed with Fentie, who shrilled and lied by omission for him were sidelined by Fentie for his dipper pal who had done nothing but demand his resignation for lying to the public!
There sit his 'loyal liars' still on the backbenches, the dipper has the bucks and the power and Fentie has his majority back! We will see if any of them still have a spine, after an insult like the one they were slapped with you would think they would all break ranks; if they had any self respect they would have left with Brad but still one has to hope.
After being stabbed in the back, will they still shrill for the very fella that didn't even blink when he demanded loyalty and lies or dismissal. I hope that Ted is taking notes and reading Kate's headline at the top of this blog.
This is a sad saga (especially for Southern taxpayers who foot the bill for this territory of paper shuffelers, with big fat gov't saleries, nothern perks, and generous subsities). I do not work for the gument so maybe I am bitter. I like to believe that I could not sell my soul so cheaply..since the gument people cross the street to avoid me, I doubt that my convictions will be tested any time soon.
