What- No specs on weaponry available? Surely you could have a rocket launcher installed eh?

I'd be happy with an MK 108 or Hispano Suiza 20mm ;)

Looks like the perfect vehicle for the Winnipeg Police Service to patrol the Hell's Half Acre region of central Winnipeg.

How about that, I was looking at the MATV website yesterday...

Can we send some to Caladonia?

Performance-wise that's OK.
South African army based a lotta stuff on Mercedes Uni-Mogs.....everything from weapons carriers to load carriers....which are a curious cross between a truck and a tractor. Uni-Mogs feature a 90bhp engine....adequate...can pull a 5-6 bottom plow---Cat 3--3pt hitch is an option.
Sort of reminds me of the immediate post WW2 period....all manner of 4WD army trucks were used for everything from farm tractors to log skidders.
I recall one such log-skidder showing up pulling off the road and getting promptly stuck in the snow....an empty log-truck rammed up close....the winch was engaged and the army truck with the winch derived ballast---prompty took the log truck to the bush.....clumsey outfit for skidding IMHO. Those things obviously were the inspiration for purpose built skidders---such as the TIMBERJACK (defunct)

and how is this better than a Nyala?

@Sasquatch
Case Tractors sold the Uni-Mog for a brief time from their dealerships in Canada in the early 1970s (when Case were still painted light yellow before becoming white.)
I remember only seeing 1 in real life, too expensive relative to a regular tractor.

There are a few for sale on this site:

Many moons ago we were testing a 6 wheel vehicle that could 'swim'. The balloon tires provided enough water displacement to keep the passengers dry and there were a couple of propellers in the back that through the wonder of variable power could actually steer the thing while on the water. Everything seemed to work until we hooked on a small cargo trailer and drove into some good ole Alberta muskeg. The trailer sank, the balloon tires spun down to hubs and there we sat. We got as close as we could with a deuce and a half strung out the winch cables and retrieved the ATV. It was a cute idea but a well placed bullet would flatten several tires and as they say "the rest is history".

At least it's less creepy than this thing:

BigDog

(Video of BigDog, a 4-legged "robot" can stumble and regain footing - eerie but somehow compelling to watch)

I'd rather have the Urban Assault vehicle used in Stripes.

Canada if the straps were removed could and would lead the world in military technology but our polititians arei n bed with the american ones and the british so we are stuck with shite. we have very good ideas here in canada and they get snuffed out due to ...take a guess ....yup politics. look at the avro aero .

Anyway i like the unimog ,i like the humvee,i like the russian one made with whale penis skin seat's to it was one S.D.A. alittle while ago to . anyway thank you ttyl.

Paul in calgary.

watt does it have for a stereo:-)))

Agreed Paul @ 7:33 pm.

We have great innovation here in Canada, and if it wasn't for our dumb politics and politicians the world could have the opportunity to experience it more often.

We need a whole bunch of 'em to replace those tinny little Iltis golf-carts-for-the-Forces thingies...

http://militarytrucks.ca/images/iltis/MP_Iltis%20%28Small%29.jpg

I've seen at least one of these, in retired form, cruising around my neck of the woods, though. Cool for civvy fun, but woefully inadequate, compared to the brutal M-ATV, vis-a-vis those pesky roadside IEDs...

Speaking of Oshkosh, for those who aren't aware, Oshkosh has also teamed up with Boeing to provide the rolling platform for Boeing's new laser-cannon weapon...

That's a name you're going to be hearing more of. I've a feeling they're a good stock prospect- Oskhosh. Seen other of their awesome (military and not-military) vehicles in the car mags before.

I want reactive armour, secondary co axial machine guns to complement a 20mm Bushmaster..

...and a cup holder for my big Tim's in the morning!

Kursk, is that the same as a M61 Vulcan?

I would like an XM-808 "Twister". Twin Chrysler 440's, the XM-808 was fast, agile, and very impressive. The project was terminated with great sadness on the part of the test personnel, who loved it.

There's a very good reason the Canadian LAV has four axles and not just two.

Cheers

Referring to the video, maybe someone needs to explain to me what this thing does that a $22K Ford Ranger 4x4 pickup can't do? Okay, it drove through a mud puddle ... and? Surely I'm missing something here.

Re: rq

I think it has something to do with this vehicle taking a direct hit from a double stack of anti-tank mines (at least) and allowing the passengers to walk it off.

Why are you talking about Suzuki's boat?

if Paul is correct then huge dollop of blame rests with steve-o harpoon for the absence of Canuckistan designed and built mil. vehicles since he's the one calling the shots right now. oh, wait, we'se all prorogued, nobody's calling the shots !!!

anyways, what *will* the talibanies do when our folks in uniform over there start driving off road *all the time*?

What no comments about its armour protection, particularly the underbody? How does it keep the occupants safe from IEDs, which are the principal threat?

The new Hummer?!

How long will it take before some caffine addled soccer mom on her hands-free cellphone backs into me with a "civilian version "of one of those at the Walmart?

Geez.

Back when I started being interested in military hardware and Main Battle Tank cost about 1-2 million and combat FB aircraft about 20x that.

Now a fancy _armoured_ _car_ with all the gear runs 1.4 Million and holds 4pp?

I fully realize a single modern MICV/APC can go toe to toe with WWII+ era tank platoon(s) and basically slaughter them wholesale until ammo runs out, but seriously, that's just an armoured car. 1.4 million?

Now that Hummer has been bought by Chinese interests, should we now expect them to have bodies made of cheap recycled steel, lead based paints, and engines derived from WW II era Soviet diesel engines and leather seats made from the skins of executed dissidents?

Oshkosh is the US company that re-brands eastern-bloc Tatras for the US military.

The Tatras are something else indeed.

Think 8x8 monster trucks with about the same tires as the truck above but on a truck that can haul a tank on its back over bumps which would demolish your new Range Rover.

The truck above wouldn't be necessary if the military used it's attack helicopters. Right now, they aren't using the helis cause they're expensive and they don't want to lose their toys. Makes you wonder why they bought them...

You wouldn't have as many dead soldiers if they weren't driving over IEDs. Of course, the Russians can tell you about hand-held sams but they all came from the US anyway.

i still like the old Dodge 3 quads the army used as late as 1978. they appear more off road capable than this thing and in first gear, low range 4 wheel drive you could climb walls!

We need something that will quickly take us into a low orbit in order to nuke the Afghan landfill as it deserves.

The M-ATV is the next generation of protected vehicle, it is somewhat smaller, lighter and better performing than things like the "Cougar" or RG-31.

These vehicles require a lot of specialized engineering expertise, and the CF has such a small demand for these sort of vehicles that no Canadian company could ever hope to sell these for a profit at any price the CF could afford.

Someone mentioned helicopters, these are another tool for somewhat different jobs. Any modern military force needs multiple tools for the job, protected mobility allows you to move when the weather is bad, or hang around for a long time (when your helis are running out of gas).

If you think this is impressive, in five or ten years the next generation will be even mor capable.

Don't believe the lefty/Taliban Propaganda.
The Mujahedin captured and made very good use of captured RPGs.....almost exclusively.
The insane practice of the Ruskies deploying Strella's (SAM 7's), against an insurgent mob with no air assets, always made me wonder. The Strellas in Mujahedin hands slaughtered a lot of Russian Helos---including Hinds.
The US contribution were a few Stingers, which made life hazardous for the jet ground attack fighter bombers....
Thucydides
Pretty much....it was for very good reason General Dynamics builds the Swiss developed, Mowag Piranha under licence. These are assembled in London for Canadian and US forces.
Joe
Good luck with your well placed bullet. Those are called run-flats---except they don't really go flat. Not much air---they contain a big rubber doughnut that is miserable to install....even with a split rim.

Suzuki has a boat like that?

At General Dynamics there was a fellow who worked on the twister; I have never seen one in action, but his eyes would glaze over when he talked about it. From what little I know, there is still nothing that can go as fast cross-country.

http://www.amphibiousvehicle.net/amphi/L/twisterspecial/twister.html

That test track looks like the road in front of my house in spring. :)

Nice truck, but if you want to see something -really- gnarly, search youtube for "truck trial 2009" and you'll see some 8 wheel drive Tatras doing some pretty crazy stuff. That's 8 wheel independent suspension, front two axles steer. Never see anything like it here, that's for sure.

Viggen, if you want to see fast, check out Trophy Trucks racing in SCORE desert series. These machines are topping out at 170+ MPH these days, spend most of their race time at over 100 mph off-road. For 600-700 miles of Baja at one go.

Admittedly there isn't a lot of mud usually, but there are silt beds, lake shores and sand washes out the wazoo.

If you only wanted to go 80 mph you could most likely put 4 guys, a gun and a ton or so of laminated armor on one. 800+ hp, 30-40 inches of wheel travel, 4X4... probably eat that Oshkosh thing for breakfast. And oddly, they don't cost 1.4 megabucks each either.

Then there's the rock racing buggies... :)
