VDH:
There is an unfocused but growing anger in this country — and it should come as no surprise. Nobody likes to be lectured by those claiming superior wisdom but often lacking common sense about everything from out-of-control spending and predicting the weather to dealing with enemies who are trying to kill us all.

"... claiming superior wisdom but often lacking common sense about everything from out-of-control spending and predicting the weather to dealing with enemies who are trying to kill us all."
It's neo-liberal elitism writ large.
They/we voted for it, so get used to it, learn to hate it and don't forget what it's like to be rules by neo-liberal elites.
Having intelligence is one thing.
Using it in a smart (wise) way is a totally different concept.
Rather than describing this as a lack of common sense, I usually describe it as a belief that logic and intelligence trump facts. The People Who Know What's Best For Us, when confronted with facts that contradict their claims, ignore the facts, rather than examining their logic. This is pretty much what lawyers are trained to do for a living.
It would suck to be on the receiving end of that anger, that's certain.
I read an opinion? by a pyschologist published a few days ago I remember not where. The gist was he took two simular groups, Reps and Dems. He asked them to answer for the other side. What he discovered was the Reps saw both sides but the reverse was not true. The Dems. could not fashion a Rep. reply. I don't know how accurate it was but it fits my observations through life.
Like I can't spell.
This is not really a case of people with intelligence trying to tell the rest of the world how to live.
It is more of a case of people with some post secondary education thinking that equates to intelligence.
As the smartest man I ever knew told me when I was but a tadpole of a sailor, any relationship between education and intelligence is purely coincedental. Always thought that was as wise a statement as I ever heard. And not bad at all for a guy with a grade eight education.
Rest easy dad.
A good article about the Tea Party proles and why they are restless.
The part that struck me is ... who are the real extremists?
http://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2010/02/11/the_fight_for_responsible_limited_government.html
The real extremists are the illumanati they want tax us back to dark ages with tools like eco taxes, health care, unregulated banking practices, all kinds of regulation of normal everyday living and so on forever until we all either work for the government or are wholly dependant on the system for eveything.
It's important to understand that that this anger, this "restlessness" is rooted in fear - not hate. It is the fear that these socialists are going to drive this country to economic ruin at the very least and possibly to death and destruction and barbarism at the hands of Islamic radicals.
Fear is a much more primal driver than hate and it is not easily mitigated by simple changes in rhetoric. The dem elite has not and probably never will understand this. Thus they will be annihilated at the polls in November and likely will enter into a political nuclear winter that will last at least a couple of decades.
Given my druthers I would sooner be ruled by a wise king than a smart one. Funnily enough Fool is a word meaning lack of wisdom not lack of intelligence. A very intelligent friend of mine foolishly amputated several appendages with an explosive device that wisdom told him not to build. So it is with our liberal friends. Many are intelligent, few are wise.
And now it's confirmed: the elitists are my intellectual and moral superiors.
So it is with our liberal friends. Many are intelligent, few are wise.

A truly frightening combination.
We need to form a Canadian Tea Party!
They remind me of the "Bob Rae and the Clampett's" rule in Ontario but with a thick frosting of possible steroid and rec-pharma abuse on the fruitcake.
Gibbs could pass for an incompetent jumped up high school social studies teacher/Marxist activist who bought in early and hit the jackpot
And speaking of ELITISTS this article on Sarah Palin speaks volumes
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/joan-williams/sarah-palin-plays-chess_b_457196.html
What about the moralizing Hollywood pukes making television shows and movies. Puh-lease. They can't cross the street without popping a handful of pills with a pernod chaser, but insist on telling me how to live my life. The constant hectoring at Christians, the continuing insistence on white American racism pushes me towards conservative activism and away from mass media. Guess it's a good thing in the long run.
Wow HT, good link, not at all what I expected.
There appears to be a shift happening on the moderate left.
HT...Thanks for that link. I was reluctant to head to huffpo...but it was worth the read.
Harper and Palin...both known now to be playing chess, while the others play checkers.
IMHO hate is a byproduct of fear....
Fear can be a by product of ignorance or wisdom.
Somebody commented that the elites in control in the US could crush opposition using the security forces---police and military. That an armed populace was no match for the professionals.
I am such a professional ( retired).
1) an armed critical mass....hidden....unorganized but with no vulnerable, detectable command and control.
2) an armed critical mass....hidden....already broadly deployed, armed and equiped without the neccesity of a vulnerable supply train.
3) an armed critical mass....hidden....with a sizable element of trained, experienced veterans. This is why Neapolitano, (Homeland Security) cited returned veterans as a security threat.
4) an armed critical mass....hidden....signifigantly outnumbering the security forces...(25-50 to 1)"Quantity has a quality all it's own" Marshall Georgy Zuckov
5) The regime's security forces cannot be relied upon to attack the citizens.
6) The regime's security forces must rely on a vulnerable supply train.
In summary---the government has the tanks, but cannot rely on the crew's loyalty and the potential insurgents possess the expertise to defeat the tanks.
Then there the inner city element, a wild card/lose cannon, which will distract, confuse the security forces much more than the insurgents.
All this is very well known and should be considered by the elites.
What he discovered was the Reps saw both sides but the reverse was not true{/Quote] Speedy
The radical Dems are “ear hole talkers”, that is the mouth is hard wired to the ears bypassing the brain. They live in a mantra that worships the words of others...Just keep repeating the same words.. same words..same words
It is a fundamental weakness of “Think Tanks” that given a set of conditions they will all reach the same conclusions.. Discipline has defined limitations.... Change just one of the dynamic conditions and they are hopelessly confused...
Of course real live is dynammic....
Boiler plate VDH there. And speaking of elitist statismand the goon squads needed to empower it:

Thomas Sowell nailed it in his new book, 'Intellectuals and Society', where he defines intellectuals as those who deal in ideas.
His equation is as follows: Intelligence - Judgement = Intellect.
Our intellectual rulers have their vision and can articulate their ideas with "verbal virtuosity", but they never have to measure the impact of their ideas, when implemented as political policy, against reality. It is the idea itself that is important and must be defended at all costs. It is the essence of political correctness. Intellectual ideas at odds with reality abound; Abortion is but a choice, gay sex is healthy, gun control means a safer citizenry....
Those who disagree are ignored or mocked and ridiculed.
I firmly believe character is a much more important trait in a leader than intellect.
Sarah Palin's character is built upon her conservative principles, which she freely espouses, and is why so many instinctively have faith in, and trust, her. Obama is the PC president who wishes to implement his grand ideas regardless of the outcome or the desires of the people. By every measure, Obama's "intellect" will make things worse and sadly it won't be limited to the US.
Great article. This reminds me of what happened with the Meech Lake Accord (Manifesto) The elite including the the MSM tried to ram it down the throats of the citizens. They managed to convice some but not enough and the accord failed. The elite cried for weeks. Sadly it took only a short time and the people forgot they had power and let the elite once again control, and continue stripping away our freedom. Yes we need a tea party.
Some people are as smart as they think they are. Others, not so. The latter is the current Democratic administration. To top it off, they are jerks. I thought smart people didn't alienate others. I guess smartness is not a virtue they possess after all.
In other news, it is Mrs. Palin's birthday. Many happy returns.
Marko, I too am finding Sowell's book truly presents the "intellectuals" as they really are.
He states that while the Fascists, Communists and the Nazis were identical in their mindset of the state as all powerful and the leftist intellectuals like Du Bois and George Bernard Shaw idolized and praised them as the greatest exemplar of Marxism socialism in the world in the 30's yet once the true anti-semitism and militarism of the fascists and Nazis became apparent the leftists quickly called them right wing. One of my lefty friends referred to the Nazis as "right wing" just recently.
Just an excellent read.
Dave

Yeah, I have had such exchanges myself.
Although I hold Thomas Sowell in the very highest of regard...I must disagree.
Despite bloody streetfights in Germany in the 30's.....the communist's didn't lable Nazi's "right wing" until after Germany and Russia were at war. Nationalism always trumps ideology among lefties.....Russian Communists are Russian's first, and so on. An attribute which the Soviets exploited shamelessly during the "Great Patriotic War" (their lable).
RESIST THE NEW WORLD ORDER
AtlanticJim, your dad was a wise old salt.
When a lefty, that you can talk to, or a non-political person calls the Nazis "right wing" and you explain that the acronym Nazi actually stands for Nationalist Socialist German Workers' Party and what the party policies were, they are generally quiet.
Excellent post. Brings the loose strings together for an up to date snapshot.
Tea party anger needs a long time to fester, meanwhile the 'PIGS' are making me nervous.
PIGS; = Portugal, Italy, GREECE, and Spain.
Especially Greece.
M remembers it wrong. What happened with Meech Lake was that the CBC decided to discredit John Turner as leader of the liberals. So they brought him on to respond to the attacks on Meech in Quebec by the PQ, and declare clearly that the Liberal party supported Meech and only the separatists did not. THe Next day the CBC wheeled in Trudeau to denounce Meech Lake, and launched exactly the kind of demagogic campaign against Meech that we saw in favour of Obama.
And it clearly worked on M.
I don't see this as a battle of the intellectuals vs common sense but rather as a conflict between the forces of self-organization and statism.
For the majority of its existence the US has allowed individuals the freedom to organize themselves into higher order structures that better fulfill their needs and this seemingly anarchic chaotic mass of individuals created the worlds most advanced society and gave it's people the highest standard of living anywhere in the world. That is until a self-selected "elite" decided that it knew how to better run the country as they were the intellectual superiors of almost any randomly chosen individual participating in this chaotic mess known as capitalism.
In terms of pure intellect they may have well been superior, but their intellectual capacity, as measured in terms of computational power, was no match for the computational power of the distributed processing system which served to match supply and demand through a mechanism that could not possibly be matched by a small group of arrogant highly intelligent statists. Just as it can be proven that the brain cannot understand itself completely as the mental model requires greater processing power/storage capacity than exists in a single brain so is it likely also mathematically proveable that an economic system cannot be simulated using computer processing power available today. (still working on this and hopefully someday it will be clearer).
The failure of central planning is clear to anyone who cares to look into the history of the USSR and similar "workers paradises". The new, self-styled "elites" think that they can succeed which Stalin and Kruschev failed. The closest analogy I can think of for this process is a person attempting to fly by gluing feathers to his arms and jumping off a high building. After extensive reconstructive surgery and rehab, he decides that the feathers weren't strong enough and glues metal feathers to his arms and prepares to jump again. Clearly the wannabe flyer here is ignorant of the fact that a human, no matter how muscular, cannot fly like a bird. It's simple physics and physiology. Statists are just as ignorant about the capabilities of a small set of human intelligences in comparison with the distributed intelligence of the capitalist system.
"Common sense" in the US is much different than "common sense" in a socialist country. In the US "common sense" is that people figure things out for themselves or that they get together with other people to figure things out. This local cooperative distributed processing is a hell of a lot more efficient than a strict hierarchical top down approach where people only do as they are told. "Common sense" to members of a socialist country is that if something goes wrong they wait to be told what to do as the state has all the answers.
The US now has the largest potential military force in the world in latent form. I particularly like sasquatch's analysis of the military potential of the populace in comparison to a large regular military force. My only concern is that BO and his statist idealists are too dumb to perform this type of analysis and will learn the hard way what happens when you try too hard to push statist policies on a nation built on the concept of non-hierarchical distributed processing.
