I'm unable to see NBC's video proof of the edge of the world being just outside of Biggar, SK. I remember being in the (then new) greenhouse for opening day back in 1995 or 6, and although I couldn't see the edge of the world I just knew it was nearby. Obviously NBC is in cahoots with Iraq's "MEMRI Tv" in offering this proof of the edge of the world. I bet it's just over the crest of that "hill" in the distance. I wouldn't go out without a rope attached to my waist. Just in case.
I wonder if the reporter in question drew isolation pay for the day?
My mother was born in Biggar. I've been there a few times, there isn't too much going on there. They have (or had) a sign saying, "New York is big, but this is Biggar." I live in San Diego, so I havent been back in ages. Furthest reaches? I don't think so. I've been further.
the best info is curiously left for the last Two paragraphs:
"While attending an event in June of 2007, Harper rented a day room at the Super 8 motel in New Brunswick for $126.
This comes after QMI Agency revealed spending in the prime minister's own office dropped from $38,440 in 2004-2005 and $39,924 in 2005-2006 under the Liberals to $1,917 in 2006-2007, $1,966 in 2007-2008 and $7,705 in 2008-2009 under the Tories."
do you think this would have been moved to the top if it was iggy not Harper?
I spent nearly 5 years lving in SK ... drove all over the place and managed to visit more small towns like and including Biggar. We used to make a hobby of finding old stuff in stores that had been around for decades.
On the whole I thought the little micro-doc was entertaining ... if not overly informative.
I suppose for some urban twit in NY anything 50 miles from a "real" city might as well be the furthest reaches of something. (probably the end of their imagination)
On a side note: how typical of a Microsoft product that i had to click through a couple of screens to watch this bing video.

On a side side note: I managed to watch it with one click and so I would suspect PEBCAK would describe Gord Tulk's experience.
On a side side side Note: The maligning of all things Microsoft is becoming about as tolerable as the The Anti-Sealing , Polar Bears are Drowning and Wal-Mart is Evil spouting.
Regarding the topic, remember this is for an American Audience who would never take the time to look where Biggar is on a map. Just like I suffered through an American Film Crew calling it the "Stickin" River while filming on the Stikine River claiming it was an Alaskan River flowing into Canada (uphill I might add), all the while standing in Canada pretending to be in Alaska. Hey its just TV!
If you're ever in Biggar, drop into the Homestead Restaurant located at the corner of the main drag and Hwy. 14. Ask for the Homestead Burger. Best burger I've ever had and I've had plenty.
My old stomping grounds are located about 20 miles east of Biggar. If you think Biggar is small, you should see Perdue.
Biffyr
You have quite a golf course at Perdue. Has to be a big highlite for the town - many towns much bigger would be glad to have that in their town.
"Maybe Barrie." Long time ago I went on course at CFB Borden. One of my roommates from south of Toronto breathlessly proclaimed "I've never been this far north". To which the old prairie boy in me had to proclaim "Wow I've never been this far south". Took the wind right out of his sails.
I suppose this was posted to show that it's not near the edge of the world. But all things considered, I thought it was well done, and they do have to have a tag to sell it to audience viewers. I was ready to get annoyed, but in the end I thought, not so bad!
That's for sure. I went to school with the owner who came up with the idea for a golf course in the middle of the bald prairie. He struggled in school, but the guy was actually a genius and worked like a dog.
I've been stuck in a lot of towns that make Biggar seem metropolitan. In those days, there were no sandwich shops, or convenience stores. We ate breakfast, and supper. That's if there was a restaurant in town.
I stayed in Compeer, AB, for a week, in 1976. The old girl at the hotel made us bacon and eggs, but there was no place to have supper. We ended up in the local bar, eating pickled eggs, and potato chips. I lost 10 pounds in a week, and didn't make many friends, either.
As OMMAG said, people who grow up in really big cities are some of the worst hicks. They're born, live, and die, without ever seeing the world, outside a 10 mile radius. Anyone can ride an elevator, but not everyone ever gets to climb a tree.

Back to you Mike Wallace
Do they have a stoplight in Biggar yet? :)
Biggar is the furthest of reaches in Canada?
Some people don't get out too often.
People say "stoplight" like they're a good thing.

The reporter just called Biggar the "furthest reaches of Canada" because he simply gave up on driving the full distance to Saskatoon. ;)
What would NBC say if they kept driving highway 14 to Landis? or Leipzig?
I guess they'll reach Climax, SK last?
Ah Jim, that joke never tires. :)
They don need no stinken stoplights.
They have Kate and the Hanson Buck

It just looks bigger because there are no trees, hills, or people. Sort of like outer space only with air.
With no links page up yet tonight I will post this link here for now:

Dang!! 33 years later and I actually remembered the sign at the edge of town in Biggar!
And lay off the Landis comments, was dad's homestead don't ya know...... ;)
I'm so tired of that dog that runs away for three days.
you don't need no stinkin stoplights, if you did you'd see 'em comin for at least a hour.

Perhaps we can send all them journalists to the real furthest reaches of Canada...I'm thinking Gjoa Haven would be a great start!!!

I thought the Kawarthas were Canada's furthest reaches? Maybe Barrie.
Wow. Biggar is now considered to be in the far reaches of Canada, does that make North Dakota and Montana the "deep south"?
biffjr.How about Kinley?
Biffyr
You have quite a golf course at Perdue. Has to be a big highlite for the town - many towns much bigger would be glad to have that in their town.
biffjr, are you kidding, Perdue is so big I got lost there.
next shuttle launch by NASA, I think I'll hitch me a ride and git them to drop me off at Saskabush:-)))
maybe even visit all 8-1/2 people in Biggar:-))

Again, Spuzzum gets no respect.
"How about Kinley?"
Yep. Even smaller. However, due to the strange thinking of the Sask. Liquor & Gaming Authority, Kinley has a liquor store. Perdue does not.
Go figure.

Sadly, he passed on well before his time.

Didn't the guy that built the golf course make his money with the invention and distribution of the ez wrap (or something similar)?
Hey, lay off the Kawarthas, wouldja? I'm from Lindsay and if you want to see Darwin's waiting room...
... of course, it's hard to get in to see the Dr. with so many teenage single Moms.
See your dog run away for three weeks? What, has Sask gotten flatter since the last time I was there when it was only 3 days???
"Didn't the guy that built the golf course make his money with the invention and distribution of the ez wrap (or something similar)?"
Yep. One and the same. EZ Wrap still has its headquarters in Perdue.
Flat? If you stand in the back of a flatbed, with a good pair of binoculars you can see the back of your own head.

Damn, thought I'd stopped that duplicate posting. Sorry.
Trick is, ya tap the button just once, see?
I spent a rather boring week in Saskatoon one day.
And I still haven't gotten to Climax. :(
@ John Brooks, the dog is older now so it takes him 3 weeks.

Far better than the CBC would ever do.
Little Mosque on the Prairie....need I say more?
